McDonnell Douglas F4E Phantom II

The McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom II was a 2 seat all weather fighter bomber for the US military which primarily saw action during the Vietnam war. The aircraft had 9 pylons (but in this case, has 13 which is mainly due to the fact that missile rails were added), 2 on each wing and 5 under the aircraft belly. By the end of it's production, the F4 Phantom had produced a total of 5,195 units which made it the most produced American supersonic fighter in history. The fighter came in 19 variants, although during the Vietnam war, it was primarily the F4E. During the war, while BVR and WVR missiles were still essentially in their infancy, the Phantoms had a kill ratio 3:1. To improve the ratio, the Air-force opted to have a internal gun installed, the Navy opted to train pilots to use missiles better via the "Top Gun" program. By the end of the war, the Navy's kill ratio increased to 13:1 whilst the Air-force's still somewhat maintained the 3:1 kill ratio and even at some point, got worse. As more modern aircraft entered service, the phantom started getting replaced and soon was no longer in service although it would be used as a practice drone (designation: QF-4) until 1996.
