Europe Expanded

Beskrivning
Europe Expanded II Release Candidate 1 is now available on the VENT forums! https://www.ventdev.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=4379 It expands the expansion into Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, and Ireland, revamps Spain, Portugal, and France, and generally has much more historic detail. Try it today!

-----

Europe Expanded is a mod for Gear City that expands the Europe Test map, by adding more cities and economic data. The eventual goal is to have a fully playable, immersive map of Europe.

By default, the Europe Test map has 69 cities, which are the same cities that the Base City map has. This map adds 55 new cities across three countries:

- France has 33 cities instead of 7
- Spain has 29 cities instead of 4
- Portugal has 5 cities instead of 1

Although using a city map instead of a territory map, the cities in Europe Expanded represent regions. The city of Calais represents the entire Pas-de-Calais region, for example. Accurate populations for these regions based on 1900 and 2020 census data (or as close as possible) are used, with the number of people living in cities in those regions being used as a proxy for manufacturing and infrastructure. GearCity will interpolate from these values if you start in the middle of this time period.

With these region-focused cities, the population represented in-game relative to the overall country population is relatively high compared to the base game:

- 60% (1900) to 68% (2020) of France's population is represented
- 72% (1900) to 83% (2020) of Spain's population is represented
- 36% (1900) to 79% (2020) of Portugal's population is represented

The higher percentage in 2020 is due to a combination of increasing concentration of populations in large cities over time, and having initially selected regions based on current populations.

Eventually, some additional features such as an expansion of Belgium, adding some more competitors, or setting Elsass-Lothringen to start out as part of Germany and become French in 1918 may be implemented. But it's a lot of work to get historically accurate data and tabulate it into a mod, and I might never finish if I tried to add all the features up front.

*** To Play ***

Subscribe to the mod. You may have to start Gear City to trigger the mod download; if so, exit.

Play Gear City again, but choose the Video Settings Editor option instead of playing the game. Go to the rightmost tab, and select the Europe Expanded mod. Hit the Save button at the bottom of that window, and then exit it.

Play Gear City, and play for real this time. Choose the Europe Test map when you start a new game. Even though it says Europe Test, it will be the expanded version with more cities

The first release candidate for this mod's successor, Europe Expanded II, is now available on the VENT forums: https://www.ventdev.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=4379

Overall it's much better than the first version, with much more detail, new cities in Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, and Ireland, and many historically accurate AI company names and starting locations. If you are looking to start a new Europe game, I recommend downloading it.

Once the last couple historical accuracy issues are ironed out, I'll likely put it up in the Workshop too (but I'm hoping the VENT forum approach leads to fewer download issues and possibly more feedback).

I downloaded another mod and I can find that one in the mods tab.

it says download in the video settings editor, and completed, but I get nothing in the mods tab. Truth be told I have one other mod on there and I do not see that one in the mods tab either.

As far as I am aware, it should be working, including in the current version. When you open the Video Settings Editor after downloading a mod, you should get a pop-up that says,

"Item Installation Complete! Be sure to select the mod you want to play in the Mods tab."

Does that happen with other mods for you?

It is possible that something went wrong with the upload; I already have it locally on all my machines as the developer, so I can't be 100% sure that it downloads properly, and it's my first Steam mod. If one of the other 199 subscribers can confirm that it's working for them, that would be great.

Did you click the Subscribe button here on the workshop? And did you launch the external settings editor from Steam while Steam was running? If yes to both of those, it'll be something JC will have to verify that he uploaded properly.

all I get is default mod in the video settings editor, if I just leave it and enter the game I do see the original European test map and nothing has changed.
Eric.B  [utvecklare] 16 apr, 2022 @ 12:33
Did you subscribe to the mod, and then load the external video settings editor?

Reading the description of this mod, JC modded the European Test Map, so you will need to switch to his mod in the Mod Tabs of the Video Settings Editor.

Be sure to launch the video settings editor from Steam, otherwise it won't connect to the Steam API. http://wiki.gearcity.info/doku.php?id=gamemanual:settings#external_engine_settings_editor

Beyond that, you'll have to wait for JC's reply. I'm not allowed to download or playtest mods.

I still don't see it
Eric.B  [utvecklare] 15 apr, 2022 @ 10:48
@walker, I believe this is a map and not a mod (JC correct me if wrong). So it won't appear in the mod tab. The Video Settings Editor will download the map, and then you just run the game and it should appear in the map list when you go to start a new game.
Walker 15 apr, 2022 @ 10:39
I do not see the mod the mod in video settings editor
