BMRF SAFETY DIVISION: Emergencies, and what they mean for you!
By Binnsyboy27
As you get accustomed to Black Mesa's different environments and facilities, it's important to acknowledge Emergency Situations. This can include a lot of things, including: Spontaneous Combustion, Security Issues, Hazardous Containment Failure, and general problems/disasters.

What's even more important, is knowing what exactly to do before and during an emergency. Luckily, the Black Mesa Safety Division is here to help!

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE DISASTER AND THE ONGOING SITUATION AT HAND
It could happen at any moment:

You could be relaxing on a day-off or finishing up an important paper. You could even be using the Black Mesa Transit System or eating at Tony's Pizzeria (Black Mesa Employees that live on-site get a free discount on all Tony's Pizza Products. Visit the Website for more details.

Disasters can happen at anytime, and while there are many measures to prevent them, accidents do happen.

BE AWARE OF YOUR CURRENT SURROUNDINGS:

While we're not advising you to be on the lookout 24/7, it's important to be aware of accidents that are ABOUT TO or MIGHT happen!

Making sure you can prevent them is key for company safety and property!

IDENTIFY THE DANGERS:

Let's see if you can identify any danger in this photo.

See anything wrong?

Why, yes!
  • The scientist on the left is holding a Rocket Launcher without proper authorization!
  • The right-most security guard does not have his standard-issue Black Mesa Security Helmet while in an industrial area!
  • The Scientists on the right are not only climbing on Black Mesa Equipment, they are also doing it right next to a combustible barrel! This is very dangerous!

The point is, that disasters are preventable. Now, your local Black Mesa Security Officer that is on duty won't be able to do it alone. It is up to you and your colleagues to logically avoid disastrous situations.

Look at this BLACK MESA SECURITY OFFICER

He's CONTACTING BLACK MESA SECURITY PERSONNEL in order to contain a disastrous situation. Good for him!

(Note: If a colleague or any other Black Mesa Employee knowingly exhibits unauthorized or dangerous behavior regarding safety, please report them)

LEARNING OF THE DANGER:

Let's say you AREN'T at the ground zero for an emergency situation. You'd need to be able to know what's going on, right?

Why of course! It's important to know what you're running from while you're running from it!

Take a look at this scientist pictured here:

He's gone ahead and asked BLACK MESA SECURITY PERSONNEL about the ongoing emergency. And they've told him that it's all under control; no need to worry!

Admittedly, overreacting is better than under-reacting. Nevertheless, it is good to understand what is going on.
STEP 2: PROPERLY EVACUATING/ESCAPING THE EMERGENCY SITUATION
Let's say you've gone through Step 1

Now that you've successfully identified the danger, you must know what to do now.

When you look at this picture, what do you notice?

You SHOULD notice the bright white/green EXIT sign hanging from the ceiling. This is helpful not only for lost personnel, but for evacuation.

EACH SECTOR IN BLACK MESA should have an evacuation route/escape available at all times. No matter how far underground or deep within the facility you are, there's always a safe place to escape to.

IF YOU CANNOT USE ONE OF THE EVACUATION ROUTES; then the evacuation route is very poorly set up.

OR, YOU SHOULD GET IN contact or meet with BLACK MESA SECURITY PERSONNEL.

They will most definitely be happy/able to assist in evacuation!
DRILLS AND THE ANNUAL ON-SITE TACTICAL MILITARY TRAINING THAT TAKES PLACE
NO NEED TO WORRY IF ALL OF THIS INFORMATION IS SCARY

Every few months, there SHOULD be a mandatory evacuation drill preparing you for a disaster.

  • Most of the time, you'd be informed when the drill will take place
  • You need to listen to Security Personnel
  • It's more of a distraction from work, more than anything

NOTE: If your sector/area does NOT have a mandatory evacuation drill, then contact the BLACK MESA SAFETY DIVISION immediately

THE ANNUAL ON-SITE TACTICAL MILITARY TRAINING THAT TAKES PLACE:

This is slightly off-topic, but the Black Mesa Research Facility has a lot of decommissioned facilities as well as outdoor areas; perfect for combat training, for our military!

EVERY YEAR the HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENT COMBAT UNIT holds a training session in one of our abandoned areas. In fact, this year's training session will take place on November 19th!

Above: Last years annual HECU Training

The soldiers that participate in the training are the best of the best, of course. Apparently, they also get to test out some of the Weapon Research's experimental technology!

the myths and rumors surrounding the crowbar
You may have heard of the infamous "Crowbar"

And, yes, it is in fact true.

Around 199- something, the Advanced Biological Research Laboratories (The Biodomes) had a security breach resulting in the escaping of multiple specimens they were keeping.

Multiple high-level personnel/scientists were reportedly stuck inside of one of the conference rooms due to activated security measures.

One of these scientists (Presumed to be Doctor Horn) apparently acquired a crowbar (By unknown means) and broke their way out of the conference room.

According to witnesses, the scientist then made a mad dash upstairs to an office (Most likely to be Doctor Horn) and brutally killed a few of the escaped specimens.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

NO we do ADVISE THE USE OF MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT IN THE EVENT OF DISASTER SPECIFICALLY AS A WEAPON

The scientist mentioned damaged quite a few pieces of company property (2 Containment Lockdown Control Buttons, 3 Retinal Scanners, and some glass) and costed the sector a few valuable specimens.

We acknowledge the existence of those "Incase of Emergency use Crowbar" framed pictures being sold/distributed but remind personnel that they are only "jokes" and should not be taken seriously.

In the event of an actual disaster involving hostile forces, self-defense is advised. But for low-level emergencies, destruction of property is not excused.

(The incident mentioned earlier only involved the escaping of 2 specimens and the accidental activation of certain security measures)
GREAT! YOU ARE NOW PROPERLY INFORMED OF THE CORRECT MEASURES THAT MUST BE TAKEN IN THE EVENT OF A DISASTER/EMERGENCY SITUATION!
Don't worry!

THE BLACK MESA RESEARCH FACILITY HAS GONE: 7 DAYS WITHOUT A MAJOR ACCIDENT/DISASTER/EMERGENCY/INJURY

The BLACK MESA SECURITY FORCE is always there to provide security!

The BLACK MESA SAFETY DIVISION is always making sure the facility is a safe workplace for all!

The BLACK MESA MEDICAL DIVISION is there in the event of an injury/accident!

And the Government Inspectors arrive once every year. In fact, they haven't visited Black Mesa this year yet. So let's at least make it to 8 days without an accident and we'll be good.

Very well written. I could see this as an actual Memo if Black Mesa was real. You should get in contact with the guy working on the pre-disaster maps, would be cool seeing this edited as an actual paper you could find and read somewhere in the Office Complex.
