Intro
Hi everyone!

Today i installed Metal Gear Rising to finish some DLC i had pending and i encountered many new issues i didnt had in the past. So, if you are trying to replay this gem or just being new to the game and you are experiencing annoying problems i will try to help you with this guide.

Lets begin!

Custom Resolution
In some cases, more nowadays than ever, you may use a display resolution that is higher than 1080p. The game doesn't allow you to switch resolutions above 1920*1080. To fix this you are going to need the first tool of the guide:

How to use it
Its easy. Just open the .exe and do the next things:
  • Locate your game path clicking on the [...] button (where metal gear rising.exe is).
  • Select your new custom resolution.
  • Press Patch

Like says in the tool, once you are in the game you have to change your game resolution in the options to 800*600. That resolution will be your custom resolution from now further.
You can close the tool now. You dont need it no more unless you wanna change your custom resolution.

Important: You will need to do this special step each time you open the game, because the app auto-configure "your best possible resolution", switching it back to 1920*1080.

Let me use my custom resolution already!

Important-Bis: Unfortunately, this causes to some options in the menu looking glitchy but still selectionable. Is worth the sacrifice!
QTE Issues Related [NEW 3/13/23]
Several comments for the MGRoverride say that it messes up parry windows and stick mashing QTE areas so you basically cant do them.

However, @NikkMann found a work around for the broken stick mashing events when using MGROverride. Download a keyramapper program for this. Use REWASD, which is paid, but I'm sure theres a free alternative people can use.

On REWASD, get the Combo addon, this enables you to map multiple keyboard buttons to one controller button. Make a profile for MGR, and then for either the left stick click or the xbox home button (since neither of those are used in-game), make a combo mapping to have it press A W S D and CTRL. Now, whenever a stick mashing segment comes up just mash that button instead, and it will work for both Left and Right stick mashing segments. If you decide to map it to the xbox home button, make sure you disable Xbox Gamebar as it'll pop up.

Thanks @NikkMann for the info.

@popovich1945 from the comments added another alternative for this issue:

Regarding remapping for the QTE stick - can be done using steam Controller Layout on the game page in the library. Just assign W+A+S+D as 4 command on single button (screenshot for example on the Xbox series X controller) + to make life a little bit easier add Turbo with 10ms frequency.

@KOMO also added:

I tried to do what @popovich1945 has done, to my surprise I couldn't find the "share" button on Steam Edit Controller page. As I really wanted to remap the QTE stick action to Xbox Share button, I found how to enable that button to show up on Steam Edit Controller Layout.
Go to Settings>Controller and find "Xbox Extended Feature Support Driver" , which is under "External Gamepad Settings". Install that driver, it'll ask for a restart, and congratulations, now you can remap unnecessary share button to anything you want. In case any of my fellow Xbox Gamepad users can't find the option to remap the button, this is why.

Following with what @popovich1945 said, see the picture below.

58-60 FPS/ Microstuttering-Lag Fix
This one was a little bit tricky.

Its well known that the menu its 30 fps and gameplay 60 fps capped respectively. However, sometimes in some configs the gamplay is capped to 30 fps too (this is my case now. Idk why but this didnt happened to me before back in 2019).

My frames are unestable. I get between 58-60 fps everysecond!

For some people, the game is indeed capped at 59 FPS.

To solve this, follow these steps:
  1. Download RTSS Software. Here[www.guru3d.com]
  2. Calculate your Refresh Rate – using this site: TestUfo[www.testufo.com]
  3. Substract 0.01 from it.
(I have 59.998 for example. Which means that my final number would be 59.988)

Do you have a 120hz, 144hz or above monitor? Just use 59.988 and you are ready!

  4. Launch RTSS.
In main window you should click ADD (green button) and find your MGR.exe
Basicallly search for your steam folder =)

5. Write number you’ve got in Step 3 into Framerate Limit bar (don’t forget to add “.” it’s very important).

Important: Program should be running in the background everytime you play the game. It doesn’t consume many resources or anything, so don't worry about it.

Wide/ Ultrawide Fix (Fullscreen Borderless Window Tools) [Updated June '22]
Use one of the tools below if you are having trouble with your frames such as the 30fps cap or the game runs at 60fps but feels slow.
For all these methods your game must be windowed.
Open Metal Gear Rising, go to Graphic Options and disable fullscreen. Select Window in the Window Mode option.
Lossless Scaling [NEW Method]
Lossless Scaling: New Method (06/21/22). Imo the best option. I recommend it over the other two.

You can get this tool from the Steam Store. Its a pretty great app overall. Very useful for this game or any other one if you wanna upscale them to upgrade the image quality or get a performance boost .

https://steamproxy.net/steamstore/app/993090/Lossless_Scaling/

Follow these steps as it shows:

  1. Add a new profile
  2. Add a title to your new profile
  3. Locate your Mgr .exe pressing on Browse
  4. Turn On Auto Scale
  5. [OPTIONAL] Put some delay to apply the upscaling. With 5 seconds works fine.
  6. Hit Add

Once the profile is created, make sure you config it like this:

Some important things you should know:
  • Set Scaling Mode to Auto. Let the app do the upscaling automaticly for you. If you are also using MGROverride, the upscale multiplicator will be 1.0 (Since the game's window is at your native resolution, there wont be any upscaling. We use this method to get a Borderless Fullscreen Window.
  • I prefer Amd's FSR Scaling type since it has more antialiasing quality over Nvidia's. You can also choose the desired amount of Sharpness to apply on the upscale.
  • We turn On Clip Cursor to prevent the mouse cursor leaving the game window.
  • The Scale button scales the focused window after 5 seconds. Pressing it again cancels the countdown or upscaling.

Finally, leave the LS app open in the icon try when you launch the game to apply the configs we made above.

Pros
  • Easy and understandable layout and configuration
  • This option makes a real and fixed fullscreen window. The ingame image does not get cropped.
  • The menu, the hud and the map shows correctly without any problem. No pop-up elements or slashed content.
Cons
  • Maybe a little increment of input lag?
Fullscreenizer [NEW Method]
Your second best option is this program called fullscreenizer. New Method (06/21/22).

Download Link
www.media fire.com/file/6utvc3azpe0ugy5/fullscreen izer.zip/file
(Join the empty spaces)

Its easy to use too:
  • Once you are in the game and you already selected your desired resolution (if you are using MGROverride will be the 800*600 one)
  • Alt+Tab and open fullscreenizer.exe. Select Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and press Fullscreenize. If for some reason is not appearing in the list, press Refresh
  • Come back to your game and thats it

Pros
  • Ingame image doesn't get cropped at the button.
Cons (Knowed bugs)
  • Menu and Hud elements seems cuted with horizontal lines.
Windowed Borderless Gaming
The last option. You may know this one due its quite popular around here and there:
Once in the site, hit that download button to get the app.

Follow the next steps:
  1. Open Windowed Borderless, go to your app's tray icon, left or right click on it and select Add window
  2. Go back to your game and while the game window is active press the hotkey ("by default it's F3") .
Your game should now be in windowed border-less mode, your settings are saved so the app will recognize your game whenever it runs in windowed mode again and automatically set it to be borderless.

If you wanna learn some extra options and configs, visit the official manual of the app here:
WBG Manual[westechsolutions.net]

Cons
  • A little bit more complex to use.
  • Ingame image gets cropped at the button.
  • Some elements of the hud and options from the Graphics menu looks bad or flashing.
  • It may force all the button pop ups in the game to be K&M even if you are using a Joystick
Dualshock Button Mod [NEW 1/31/24]
First of all, thanks to @SuperEspresso for this whole section.

- The Texmod [gamebanana.com] coupled with Dualshock 3 Button Mod[gamebanana.com]

or

- The Dualshock Button Prompts[www.pcgamingwiki.com]

I use the second option. For some it's a bit confusing to install.

Follow these steps below:
  • Unzip the downloaded file Metal Gear Solid Rising Revengeance DS3
  • Inside the folder Ignore the 360 Folder. This is for language support on the 360 controller. Find your language:

    US = English
    DE = German
    ES = Spanish
    FR = French
    PT = Brazilian Portuguese
    IT = Italian

  • Inside your folder of choice, find the Ui folder.
  • Cut or copy it to your ..\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE\GameData directory.
To revert to default remove the UI folder.

I don't use the first mod is it is incompatible with most other screen fixes. It's user choice.

Optional/ Recommended Visual Preset
If you are looking to improve a little bit your visuals you can use this SweetFx (sounds familiar? I feel old) preset but since i remember i had some issues loading it to the game we will use an extra tool (and i swear is the last one) to make it work.
  • RadeonPro
Very deprecated but useful for this step. Works with AMD/ Nvidia GPU's. Just be sure to dont change things to avoid messing all up! Ofcourse you can if you want to but you are at your own!
    Download Here[www.radeonpro.info]

Additional Info provided by @NikkMann about Rashade presets, Thanks!
If you decide to use Reshade, use version 4.9.1, version 5 and above causes issues with shadows in the game. Also, if using reshade, disable the steam overlay as it causes graphical issues with any version of reshade in MGR.

Setting up RadeonPro:

  1. Open RadeonPro Settings
  2. Select SweetFx Settings
  3. Enable SweetFx integration
  4. Select your SweetFx installation path. You can try any version, mine is 1.4.

    Download SweetFx 1.4 here:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mwUXP15tiDeKt9c9tqxkZSKvPE2yq2IM/view?usp=sharing
    (Link Fixed)

  5. Change your toggle hotkey to preview the changes ingame. I use the scroll lock button
  6. Save
  7. Close
Creating a profile:

  1. Create a new profile
  2. Add your metal gear rising.exe path

Sfx Preset i use:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Kg9dMpBh8itoWuy7m3D-88H0zfRkbOUU/view?usp=sharing
(Link Fixed too)

  1. Select the profile previously created
  2. Go to SweetFx tab
  3. Press Enable SweetFx
  4. Go to the bottom of the tab and click on Import settings. Select the Sfx Preset you previously download
  5. [/i]

As you can see, above the import settings button are your Sfx preset values. If you know what you are doing, you can change those values manually.
Also, you can download my preset. Is the one i used on the captures in my profile. Feel free to watch them if you want :)

Here are some of them:

In case you wonder... i know i know.. there are utilities like Amd catalyst or Geforce Experience to do this. I have this files before those features existed. Still working fine, luckily.
Optional/ Recommended Camera Mod
This basically just fixes some camera restrictions and leaves the camera a little more calm and fixed. And is also centered, rather than sided to the left. Includes files for the campaign and the dlc's.

It wasnt created by me! I dont have the mod's original link but it was created by someone called Shigu, so credits go on him!

Each version of the camera mod have instructions on it, so read them carefully and everything will be more than fine :)

Edit: It seems to mess up during the portion of sundowner's fight where you're riding the slider through the building. Thanks @Samuel

Optional/ Recommended No Noise Filter
If you feel the game's noise filter is too strong you can remove it completely using this simple mod.
Just paste the GameData folder inside your game location and replace if necessary.

Final Thoughts
Hope the guide was useful for you!
This was some temporal fixes i managed to search and use to play the game properly.
I tried the patch provided by Flawless Widescreen to see if the menu problems could be fixed but only made things worse.

Personally i didnt notice an increment of input lag when i changed from fullscreen to windowed. But feel free to test it by yourself! Experiment with different variants.
You can try enabling Low Latency Mode in your Nvidia control panel and set it to Ultra (AMD also have this, but i dont remember how the option is called. Let me know its name and i'll add it to the guide. Sorry!).
BUT! be careful. If you have a weaker CPU or your GPU is always at high usage will cause unwanted and negative effects, like get lower FPS and FPS Spikes that will cause stuttering.

EDIT 27.may.2022: Thank all of you for the gifts and positive reviews. It means a lot to me!

With nothing else to say, now you can go and smash that joystick/ keyboard with no mercy.

Stay safe,
Metal ϟThunderϟ.

Your are welcome! I think its not possible because gameplay mechanics are tied to 60 fps. Like mortal kombat or darksouls. Could break lot of things :bbtcat:

Thank you very much for this guide! Only I can't unlock 60+ fps, is it possible? I have 144 hertz

You mean u cant select it or u dont even have it? Try the restore button in the patch.
Or maybe create a custom resolution 800*600 from the Nvidia/ AMD panel so you can select it then in the game.

Thanks for your comment and for sharing BlaixenU! New alternatives are always welcome so more players out there can fix their game :happymeat:

(Integer Scaling is good, but there's a reason Lossless Scaling is paid. Doesn't take much a genius to figure out why, but it's because Lossless Scaling offers way more options. Of course, if you don't care about those options, then Integer Scaling will save the day)
BlaixenU 13 Jul @ 7:04pm
FYI there are other alternatives to using Lossless Scaling. There's freeware named 'Integer Scaling' and there's also a built-in AMD setting called 'GPU Scaling' for which you have to set the scaling mod to Full Panel. I own an AMD machine myself and this guide would've caused me to spend money thinking that this game (and others) would look better (not knowing they look the best they can rn xd)

Overall REALLY good guide. I really like it. Keep up with what you do.

Thats so sweet of you man! Thank you so much for the shout out. I REALLY appreciate it. I've always ONLY modded the game with the silly dualshock mod because I cannot physically hold the xbox controller. It's too big for my child-sized hands. Even at 32 I just feel far more comfortable with a nice DS controller. There's also something nostalgic about holding the same controller I used to play the game for the first time. I have a custom DS edge controller now and it's immensely helped the game feel more intuitive on my machine. Only feels right I share my secrets with the rest of the world. You went out of your way to make this excellent guide. I had to give back. :joel: Thank you again for all of your efforts.
