Grant's Volga Bulgaria (Almis Yyltavar)

Volga Bulgaria was a Bulgar state that existed in the lower Volga from the 7th to the 13th century, becoming one of the most prosperous nations towards Europe and between the Rus and Persia. While initially a vassal of Khazaria, the Volga Bulgars broke free some time in the late 9th century, establishing a new capital at Bolghar, near Kazan. After the Kiev king Sviatoslav destroyed the Khazars a century later, Volga Bulgaria became a fully-fledged state of its own, strategically placed between east and west to massive profits. By 1223 Genghis Khan had advanced his armies into the region, but was shockingly defeated; it was only a decade, with the systematic destruction and pillage of Volga civilization, that the Volga Bulgars became Mongol subjects.
