  • Your current GPU must support DirectX 11
  • It's highly recommended that you Disable the Steam Overlay for this game.
  • There appeared to be some FPS cap issue when playing on high refresh monitor now and then
Graphical Glitches Fixes with dgVoodoo2
dgVoodoo2 is a piece of software that allow to wrap the outdated DirectX 9 implementation of Safecracker with a layer, allowing running the game on DirectX 11 - which eliminate the graphical issues (think of it as some sort of 'emulation' layer)

  • Get the latest version here: https://github.com/dege-diosg/dgVoodoo2/releases - dgVoodoo2_75_1.zip at the time of writing this guide
  • Extract dgVoodooCpl.exe in the root of the zip file into your \steamapps\common\Safecracker 2 directory
  • Extract D3D9.dll, D3D8.dll, DDraw.dll, D3DImm.dll in the path \MS\x86 of the zip into your \steamapps\common\Safecracker 2 directory
  • Run dgVoodooCpl.exe, click on the [.\] button to add the current folder in to the list

  • On the General tab, configure everything like this

  • Click on the DirectX tab, change it to something like this

  • If you not planning to using the upscale step later, then I personally find the configuration below giving some improvement at 1440p

  • Hit Apply and exit the dgVoodooCpl tool, you can play the game now and all of the graphical glitches should be gone.
Upscaling for 1440p/4K using Magpie
Magpie can enlarge any window to full screen and supports a variety of advanced zoom algorithms, including Lanczos, Anime4K, FSR, FSRCNNX, etc. We use this to upscale the original game window into much higher resolution like 1440p or 4K

  • Make sure you have applied the graphic fixes in the previous dgVoodoo2 section
  • First, open the steamapps\common\Safecracker 2\config.ini, change bFullScreen=1 to bFullScreen=0, save and close.
  • Get the latest Magpie English Patch version here: https://github.com/7Brandyn7/Magpie/releases - I would suggest getting the Reduced.Sharpen.zip but it is up to you.
  • Extract the Magpie download into some location, launch \Release\Magpie.exe
  • Edit the Hotkey to anything you want or leave it default

  • For Scaling Mode, pick FSR (heavier, sharper) or Lanczos (lighter, less sharp compare to FSR). It's up to you which one you prefer.

  • Launch the game and it should open in Windowed mode, press the Hotkey combination defined in Magpie and it will upscale the game window for you. Enjoy!

Anyone still on this thread? I'm having severe framerate issues, but otherwise it works

Can confirm that this works.

For the rare Linux user who stumbles into this problem: I tried dgVoodoo2 w/ wine and proton, but had no luck. dgVoodoo2 does in fact work on Linux once in a while. I tried numerous older proton versions, but what worked for me was *attempting* to run with proton 3.16 (the game does not launch) and THEN running on proton 3.7.

I uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times to confirm this behavior. I had steam input disabled btw. I don't know what's happening, but I've expended all my patience. After launching the game, my Safecracker 2\config.ini looks like:

[OPTION]
MIXING=S
SAVE=1
SPEED=-1
SUBTITLE=1
AMBIENT=100
SFX=100
VOICE=100
LOC =US

bUseHardware=1
bUse32BitsSprites=1
bUse32BitsScreen=1
bFullScreen=1
bScreenResolution=2
dataset=2
nProfiles=1
nVolume=100
bSoftBilinear=0
bCenterMouse = 1

[INSTALL]
PATH=Z:\path\to\steam\folder\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Safecracker 2\Datas

I have a new laptop with DirectX 12 on a new Windows 11 system and this still appears to be an issue. The main screen has five option bars to choose with no text, mouse is extra glitchy, and if you just click the top option bar the following screen has no text either. I was really looking forward to playing this.

No, I get it. I was just putting that there for some clarity. I've actually recommended the guide in several places. dgVoodoo2 is not new to me, in fact I have been making use of it, on and off, for literally years at this point, but your guide is great at telling someone exactly what to do to get this game to work, so kudos.

This is definitely the better way compared to janky solutions like grabbing old DLL from obsolete WINE builds, etc.
