How to get fewer reports in Dota2
By V_L_4_D
As in all pub games, you'll be meeting quite the variety of human characters. Most of them bad ('cause it's easier to be this way) who will find any excuse to report you when loosing the game and try to convince others into reporting you as well.

This list is addressed to solo matchmaking when playing with unknown party members, for all game modes.
It is NOT addressed to actual bad intended players who want to find out how to ruin games and also get pointers on how to not get reported.

Jerks will always be jerks but this list has one purpose - to statistically reduce the number of rage reports one gets over a sequence of 20 matches when the reputation updates.

General hints
No matter the mode, if solo or party matchmaking, ranked or normal:
  1. NEW PLAYER MODE

Normally reports are not for beginners or unskilled players. But even when winning the game, a bad player will attract some attention and reports. So it's better to play new player mode first, until you at least get a hang on the basics and then move to normal. Do NOT disregard the normal mode importance, as reports here do ruin your reputation as well - not as huge as reports in ranked games though.
The normal mode is NOT for learning the basics!

  2. NEVER GRIEF!

CONTROL YOUR RAGE - if you're playing with jerks in team, do not follow their behaviour! not only that it will make no sense, but the few left "normal" in your team might not distinguish between you and the rest. Even if you feel like your actions are justified considering the things some of your party members do.
TRY MUTING ALL CHAT - with both sound and text so you won't be that annoyed anymore, but whatever you do, try to keep your composure and play in blind (against all winning chances). You'll be surprised to know that, not in a few cases, you get to win even with jerks in team and anti-game behaviour.

  3. Do NOT chat in-game - EVER!

Most of the players which are aggressive in reporting usually waste their reports very fast. So there's a big chance that they won't have any reports left (this will go hand in hand with their ambition to convince others into reporting you, stopping in the middle of the game to comment on you instead of playing). However there is a bigger chance they will still have communication reports left (which one gets more than actual gameplay reports after the numbers reset) - these will add-up and you will loose reputation.
Not to mention that those who do have gamplay reports left, when they rage and report you in game, be sure they'll try to report you at the end for communication abuse.
So no talk - no point in explaining to them anything, they will just become more agitated and the communication reports won't count if you did not used the chat ( no "/roll" as well !!!)
When in a party with friends ALWAYS USE THE MIC and preferable on an external chat app.

  4. Do NOT go mid

There's a bigger chance you'll get reported by the players on both the other lanes if you loose the game while you are mid. Everyone of your teammates will find you as the main reason for their loss.
Also if you help your lane partner and things go well at least you'll get one on your side, whilst even if you own the mid they will argue you didn't gank or they will say 'ez mid" anyhow when they loose.
NEVER FIGHT FOR MID even if you're good!

  5. Try to follow the standard builds

One of the most frequent comment and reason for reports is pointing out some items you have either not compatible with your hero (in their opinion) or finished too late in the game.

  6. Pick supports, ward and heal your team-mates

Carry picks "carry" a lot more responsibility and guilt throughout the game.
More importantly than heal is the warding so if you pick omniknight for example make sure you also ward as people will tend to forget more easily about you saving their asses than seeing the map constantly dark.

  7. Try to stay with your team

Even if they are very bad you should join their team-fights. If they are loosing because they are bad then the rage will be distributed among them and you won't be a target for reports. But when farming somewhere else and they all die, then the chances to get all the reports are higher, especially if they feed frequently as you'll often remain the only one alive.
Use the teleport to them frequently, especially in early game so they see you're an active player. The worst thing is to be "unknown" by your team till mid or, even worst, late game.

  8. At least one disable item

Only after you have some of the standard build items, you should go for a disable item (rod, orchid, eul - in this order of importance). The one who "get's' the enemy in a gank has more positive impact on the team than the one getting the kill. You can also save them which is viewed with some positivity although for not a long time.

  9. Commend everyone at the end

If an enraged person sees that he's got a commend from you, they will be less likely to report you AND you loose nothing doing so AND there are more chances to get commended back, which counts to bring your reputation up.

  10. Log in to the game in time

This goes without saying that, forgetting to accept the the login to a game is the most avoidable reputation loss by far. And yet we all did it at least once :). My suggestion is to check the "bring forward option" when the game is found in the dota2 settings.
Ranked mode

BE VERY CAREFULL WITH THIS MODE! - reports here matter the most, you can get your reputation ruined with ease very fast, tread lightly!

  1. ALWAYS PLAY YOUR ROLE!

  2. ALWAYS PLAY YOUR ROLE!

  3. ALWAYS PLAY YOUR ROLE!
In both the hero-picking phase and your general attitude and behaviour throughout the game.

  4. Only pick mid if you're really good and if you gank constantly

If mid players are usually targets for rage reporting, well, in ranked games, they are the MAIN reason to report. Even in winning games, if they stay on lane too much, or if one lane feels they are not being helped enough.

  5. Stay near the best player/s in your team

In early game check other lanes as well and try to identify the best player in your team. You can also check the score tab from time to time but that is not always a good indicator - observe his reaction-skill combo. Then stay with him and support him.

  6. Be ACTIVE!

Do not fall asleep on lane and do NOT fall asleep farming. In fact don't farm for long no mather what hero you're playing with. All the reports will fall on you if your team's fighting doesn't go well while you are idle in jungle. That image when they are all dead and you in jungle will get you reported almost instantly, EVEN if, when you leave the jungle, you own everything and win the game.
To ROAM or not to ROAM? that is NOT a question ... just do it!

  7. Reputation above 6500
Check your reputation if below 6500 you're getting close to long term bans because of your cumulated reports, go normal mode until you get it above this margin as the next drop in reputation could start to be fatal first a few days next a week and then 3-6 months ban.

  8. Do not feed!

Not talking about intentional feed but mind your score EVEN WHEN PICKING SUPPORT. If things end badly and you loose the game, raging people feel the need to make a 'useful' spend of their reports and will report the most obvious fault - the feed. They do this, thinking that their report has the most chances to be returned to them after the overwatch check. Even when checking the recording, you must find someone with a keen eye, to see that you played well as a support and did your job even if you ended up with an obvious negative score in the end.

  9. Don't push alone
Same thing as the "stay with your team" hint. When fighting and focusing on a lane, your teammates will forget about you getting 2 towers on some other lane all alone. If the game is lost, no one will remember you get x towers, but they will recall you not being there with them. So be very careful with heroes like NatureProphet, NagaSiren, Terrorblade, Chen, Arc and others alike.
Normal mode
Play this mode more as a rebound, if you've lost a lot of reputation in a short amount of time. Here you have to play more games in order to build up your rep, but it's less risky than ranked.

  1. Don't get the carry players angry!

Even if stealing farm from your teammates NEVER was a reason to be reported in normal mode, this will get people angry for some reason. Thinking if they picked PhantomAssassin for example, all the team should bow to them, and not do anything except pulling creeps and buying them tangos. Doing this, however, is the fastest way to get a report for griefing in early game.

  2. Be better than the worst

You don't have to be great in order to not get a rage report if the game is lost. You just have to be better than the worst 2 players from your team. The only way to get away from a bear while running is for you to outrun a member of your party ... not the bear. Don't attract negative attention, let others do that.

  3. Ward the map

This matters the most in normal games, as in ranked, the roles for supporting are already assured, being a role pick. But in normal games people tend to not play support, thinking they don't have to play a role anymore, hence if you are the one warding, your team's rage will have a chance to focus on someone else. Ward when no one else does so, even if you don't have a support hero.

  4. Roam a lot

Being the most active always helps to not get a report out of rage, so gank a lot, even if your hero is not there yet. Following the same principle from the previous hint, this matters most in a game mode where there are predetermined roles, no one will remember you for picking safelane and them feeding in early and loosing their lanes. But they will remember if you help their lane from time to time, especially when fewer people do that in a normal game since it's not a ranked role.

  5. Carry vs hard support

Be careful with the extremes (pos 1 and 5) as these ones get reported the most. Carry players not being able to outcarry everyone on the map and hard support players not lighting up the map as a cheap map-hack. Avoid this roles if your reputation is very low.

Conclusion
Whatever you do try not to go into the "obvious" extremes, do not attract negative attention on yourself and grind your way through with building your reputation by mostly doing community work (that's supporting :) ) Do this while you get past 8000 reputation.

Thanks for reading and let me know if you tested out any hints!
