Once upon a down in Mexico: A solo stealth guide to Border Crossing on Death Sentence
By taishouyatteru and 2 collaborators
A compendium for all the data I've collected based on my countless hours in trying to beat the mission solo on DS to unlock the Once Upon a Down in Mexico achievement. Remember, you have to have one down mechanic activated. In this guide I will outline my strategy to not only complete the mission, but secure the roman armor hidden in the Mexico vault as well. (Two Step Verification achievement). This guide is meant to be a step-by-step walkthrough. Hope it helps.

INTRODUCTION
Completing this mission will take over an hour, approximately 80 minutes. You will fail, again and again, but with each failure you'll gain a little bit of knowledge that will help you in your future runs, and eventually, you will succeed. Remember, patience is key.

GLOSSARY

PC = Plain clothes, guards without pagers
UG = Uniformed guard, guards with pagers
GF = Ground floor
1F = 1st floor
NW = North Warehouse (Mexico)
SW = South Warehouse (Mexico)
BUILD
SKILLS
The standard stealth build should work here. As usual the burglar perk deck and the shinobi tree will be crucial, nimble, sixth sense, etc. You will need jack of all trades and more firepower for the extra trip mines, and the dodger tree provides extra concealment. How you choose to invest the remaining skill points is entirely up to you.

WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT
You will need OVE9000 SAW and a silenced secondary weapon, the judge shotgun would be a good choice. There will be at most six doors (three in the south warehouse and three in the north warehouse, mexico map) that require the saw to open, drilling them is simply not an option here as the guards patrol all the way to the cages We'll go further into the details later.
Although ECMs will be helpful, they will not be necessary. Take trip mines as the primary equipment instead to mark enemies, and a body bag case as the secondary for emergencies (this is optional, if you prefer ECMs or ammo bags for the saw, then go for it.)
PREPLANNING
The mission is separated into two parts, we start at the US side of the border and then make our way into Mexico. Restarting at any point of the mission will reset the progress back to zero, lucky for us, the first part of the mission (US) is incredibly easy. Do not waste any favor on the US side, you will need as much help you can get as possible when you arrive at mexico. Note that this is not a two-day mission, and you will have to buy the favors for Mexico before you start the heist.

UNITED STATES

United States is a single building map with two shacks at the sides. The building itself has at least four entrances, two of which do not require any lockpicking. They are the front entrance, which is where you spawn, and the side entrance, which we will be using as the entry point.

The building has two floors, the briefing room and the camera room will always be on the first floor whereas the keys to the briefing room will be on the ground floor. Your objective is to find the cave entrance outside the building, look for the keys to the briefing room, enter the briefing room and defuse the C4 if there's any, lockpick or drill the safe inside the briefing room for the vault blueprint (you will need to get this blueprint if you want the vault containing the roman armor to spawn in mexico, else, it will just be a blank wall), and finally, find the codes to the tunnel and enter it. There will be four meth bags in the briefing room, you don't have to take it with you.

All of the guards in the US map are plain-clothes (guards without pagers, henceforth known as PCs), the strategy is simple: kill everyone without being seen. We will go into further details in the next section.

MEXICO

The Mexico map has four buildings: South warehouse (small), North warehouse (large), and two Hangars, one with the plane and one with some loot. The camera room, along with the vault to the roman armor (again, this vault will only spawn only if you get the blueprint from the safe in US), will be at the north warehouse. There will be some loot in the hangar, but most of the loot will be in both the north and south warehouses.

The spawn point for Mexico varies with each playthrough, the ideal places to spawn are the ones directly next to the hangars (north and south eastern side of the map). Starting at the western tunnel might be difficult, but not impossible. We will go through the strategies for each starting point later.

You will be spending all of your favors for this map. The most important favor to get is the roof access at the northern warehouse, and body bags, one at least, I usually get two. The remaining favor is for an ammo bag, where you place these do not matter, except for the roof access, that is very important.

Dead Drops

Roof Access

This map will be crawling with guards, both PCs and uniformed (guards with pagers, henceforth known as UGs). Patience is key. We can differentiate between PCs and UGs by the clothes they wear. PCs wear either a striped T-shirt, or a black suit. All UGs wear a white shirt and a vest.

THE HEIST (UNITED STATES)
Step 1: Disable cameras
There are two possible spawn points for the camera room and both of them will be at 1F of the building. Enter through the side entrance by cutting the fence and then sprinting past the camera, use sixth sense in Brief Respite and wait for the guard** to patrol up the stairs, go up, kill the guard at the hallway without being seen by the camera at the top of the stairs, finally, kill the guard in the camera room.

Using sixth sense in Brief Respite (I call it brief respite because you rest here to observe ahead before progressing upstairs), and then looking up at the ceiling will reveal whether there is a guard standing above you. If you see a guard, it means that the camera is at spawn point 1, otherwise, it will be at spawn point 2.

Left: Camera room spawn point 1
Right: Camera room spawn point 2

**The patrolling guard will always be there, he spawns at the workshop on GF, and will make his way upstairs, until he reach the end of 1F hallway. The guard in the camera room is also a guaranteed spawn.

Step 2: Secure the area
With the patrolling guard and the camera guard down, there's only one guard left on 1F, he will always be chilling on the balcony. Depending on your luck, there is a small chance that a fourth guard will patrol onto 1F, he spawns at the backrooms (GF) and patrols his way upstairs via rear staircase.

Exit the building using the rear window, and quickly secure the external areas. Check for guards (at least three patrolling) and civs (two) at each side of the building, and then kill the two guards that always spawn at the front entrance.

**There is a rare chance that an extra guard will spawn in the unnamed room north of the rear staircase, to the east side of workshop.

These two guards are tricky because they will always be talking to one or two civs, if you approach them and do not see the civs, it just means that they had yet to exit the main hall. If so, wait near the front entrance until you can tie them up as well. You don't want to be caught carrying other tasks as they exit the building and spot the bodies.

Next, secure the workshop. I find the best approach to be going to 1F and then descending the front staircase. This way you can spot and kill all three guards at once. The sequence should be:

1. Kill the middle guard, crouching
2. Kill the left guard, crouching
3. Kill the right guard, standing

There will be a chance of a fourth or even a fifth guard in the workshop , the fourth guard will be crouching near the cupboard beside the sh*tter entrance, and the fifth guard will be standing at the corner of the room, behind the pillar. The fourth guard will not be alerted if you dispose of the three guards quick enough. The chance of a fifth guard spawning in the workshop is very low.

Finally, you can now secure the main hall. It does not matter if you are spotted or shot at here, as they are no other guards in the building to call for help. You can simply waltz in and quickly dispose everyone. It is actually unnecessary to secure the main hall if you've already found the keys, as there is nothing else you need in the room.

STEP 3: LOCATE THE TUNNEL

Follow the marker and find the tunnel.

STEP 4: FIND THE KEYS TO THE BRIEFING ROOM

KEY SPAWN POINTS ARE MARKED HERE

BRIEF RESPITE KEY (To the right of the room entrance)

KEY DROP OFF POINT (Spawns right next to TV)

FACTORY SETTINGS KEY

WORKSHOP KEY (On the table in the middle of the room)

MAIN HALL KEYS

As mentioned before, you will only need to secure the main hall if you're sure that the keys are spawned inside. The keys will be at the key drop off point if you've spent favors on it during preplanning.

STEP 4: ENTER THE BRIEFING ROOM

  • Defuse the C4s, if any.
  • Take the crowbar and the keycard on the table
  • Look for clues to the tunnel door password on the map on the table
  • Drill or lockpick the safe to retrieve the blueprint
  • (Optional) Bring the meth bags with you

STEP 5: FIND CODE BASED ON CLUE

CLUE 1
It's in the sh*tter (GF, sh*tter near the workshop)

CLUE 2
Factory settings (GF, Hallway between backrooms and main hall, one of the key spawn location)

CLUE 3
Year of arrest (1F, camera spawn point 1 or 2, the room that is *not* the camera room)

CLUE 4
Year the club was founded (GF, main hall, peek right at main entrance)

STEP 6: DRILL OPEN THE STORAGE SHACKS (OPTIONAL)

The vault in Mexico requires two key cards to open, if you're playing on solo, the second keycard will spawn in Mexico in the north warehouse, first floor.

However, if you're playing with a friend, the second keycard will not spawn in Mexico. Instead, you have to take the second keycard from one of the storage shacks in United States.

STEP 7: ESCAPE THROUGH TUNNEL
Make sure you have the following items before you proceed
  • Blueprint
  • Crowbar
  • Keycard, (Two keycards if you're not playing solo)

Once in Mexico, there are three possible spawn points, tunnel exit on the north (spawn point 2), west (spawn point 3) and southeast below the hangars (spawn point 1).

SPAWN POINT 1, 2 AND 3

There are two hangars, one with a plane and one with three loot cages, whether the plane spawns in hangar A or hangar B varies with each playthrough. There will be cameras in the hangars, and the guards will not patrol into the hangars until you open the gate (escape sequence).

THE HEIST (MEXICO) PART 1
STEP 1: REACH THE HANGARS

Regardless of spawn point, the first location to go to is the hangar. Without finding the plane first, the game will not let you know the required loot to complete the mission. The required loot varies with each playthrough, the variations are: 12 bags of cocaine, 12 bags of money bags, 12 bags of assault rifle

If you spawned at point 1 and 2, good for you, the hangar is just right beside you. Just look out for the two PCs standing directly outside the tunnel though! They have a >50% spawn chance and killing them will prove to be difficult because one, there's cameras watching and two, UGs will actually patrol past them.

At spawn point 1 they will be behind the cement bags, at spawn point 2 they will be in front of the lorry, facing the NW front entrance.
________________________________________________________________

Spawning at point 3 will require you to go through the South Warehouse undetected and then make your way to the hangar. First, immediately head right after exiting the tunnel (watch out for the UG that will patrol all the way to the dumpster, right side of the tunnel), and enter SW through its rear exit (lockpick door), then sneak past the one scientist (always stationary in SWB, with his back against the rear exit door) and one to two patrolling UGs (they walk from SWA to SWC randomly, one guard in particular will enter and exit the SW via the side entrance). There are stairs left of the rear exit door, (see: screenshot below) the patrolling guard will not patrol up the stairs to the platform, the platform connects SWA all the way to SWC, this helps us navigate through the areas easily.

You can also put down some sensor mines while you're making your way to the SW front entrance, you would need to come back here later to secure the loot in the cages.

Upon unlocking the front entrance, you will immediately see two PCs chatting on the other side of the runway. Killing them would be risky, and unnecessary. Knowing how to Sprint Crouch Jump here would be extremely useful.

SOME SIDE NOTES:

  • Reaching the hangar via North Warehouse is near impossible without alerting a few guards on the way, it is not recommended.
  • Once you unlock both doors at the front entrance, both UGs patrolling in the SW will now patrol into the airlock. Keep this in mind when you're looking for a place to hide your loot/body bags.

AT THE HANGARS

STORAGE HANGAR (WITH LOOT CAGES)

There will be two cameras, one on top of each each side entrance door in the hangar, you can evade them by hiding behind the crates. The cameras will not spot you if you lockpick the door while crouched. Do not try to drill the cages at this point, do it later when you've already disabled the cameras.

ALLEY BETWEEN HANGARS

You will have to loop the camera here before you lockpick the next door. However, do remember that a UG will patrol into this alley, so always be ready to retreat if you see an alert meter pop up.

AIRPLANE HANGAR

Congratulations, you have found the plane, do not tie the lone civilian facing the wall inside the hangar. He will not move, nor turn around. He will not bother you unless you are standing directly in front of him. Tying him up will only cause trouble for you later during the escape sequence.

ROUTE OVERVIEW

STEP 2: SECURING THE NORTHERN WAREHOUSE

Arguably the most difficult part of the game, there will be a total of four UGs (this is consistent) and 1 ~ 3 PCs + 1 ~ 3 civilians in this warehouse, excluding the guard looking at the camera.

The four UGs and two PCs will patrol between both sections, one PC in particular (striped shirt) will always patrol the vault tunnel, the others will also sometimes enter the vault tunnel, although not always, it's best to assume they will, so try not to leave any body bags near the vault assuming no one will see it. Meanwhile, the civilians inside NWA and FORKLIFT will always be stationary.

First thing to do here is to unlock front entrance, then unlock the door connecting locker room to NWA. This will let you peek inside NWA to scout for number of civs and PCs.

Then, head on to 1F via roof access ladder, make sure the PC patrolling the cafeteria (if any) is not standing by the window before you pick its lock. Check for cameras in the cafeteria before you kill this PC. As mentioned before, the PC will not actually enter the cafeteria (room with coffee maker, tables and chairs), only the hallway surrounding the cafeteria. The UG patrolling at the catwalk outside will not enter this entire area, so feel free to leave the body bag in any of the rooms.

Check camera spawn point 1, make your way across NWA to office room 1 (sprint jump crouch), check camera spawn point 2. If camera room is at spawn point 1, you're lucky.

With cameras secured, wait for your window to jump down and dispose of all civs in NWA.
You can bag their bodies and hide them in the locker room. If possible, kill the striped shirt PC as he patrols into the vault tunnel via entrance close to cage 04, again, don't leave his body in the tunnel. Bag it and hide it in the locker room.

YOU CAN kill EVERYONE (all four UGs, all PCs, all civs) in NW to secure the entire area, I've found that some of my successful runs were done by employing this strategy. However, this leaves NO ROOM FOR ERROR in the later parts of the game.

OR

YOU CAN kill ALMOST EVERYONE (all civs, PCs and two UGs ), leaving TWO UGs on either GF or 1F.

OR

YOU CAN just not kill anyone here. This will be pretty challenging.

The strategy to kill both guards on NW 1F is simple, wait inside office room 1 until they patrol towards you. Be careful though, guards can actually see through the windows next to the control panels.

If you do not wish to kill the two UGs on 1F, just make sure that, if the camera room is at spawn point 2, bag the body after you kill the PC guarding the cameras, and hide the bag in the cafeteria. I've tried a strategy where I hid the body bag in the corner next to the control panels, it seemed to be a blind spot for the guards, but success is not guaranteed as I've only tried it once.

THE HEIST (MEXICO) PART 2
STEP 3: SECURING NW LOOT

If you've secured the entire warehouse, there is no need to waste saw ammo on cages 04, 05 and 06. Simply place down a drill after you've visually confirmed that the loot you need is inside the cage.

**Cage 01, 02 and 03 are opened via control panel in office room 1, go to the control panel and interact with the screen that displays the cage number that you need opened, a timer will start, you will have to head down immediately to GF and interact with the cage door before the timer runs out.**

If there are still guards in the area, you have to wait for your window to go in and saw the cages. Use sixth sense to make sure that there are no guards both on GF and 1F before you proceed. The sensor mines will do wondrous work for you here. You can place the loot in the locker room before moving them to the plane.

If the loot you need to secure is either COCAINE or MONEY, some of the loot you need WILL spawn in crates. I've marked all crates position in the diagram below. ASSAULT RIFLES will NEVER spawn in crates.

SHIPPING CRATE LOCATIONS (NW)

OPENING THE VAULT

There are four pieces of ROMAN ARMOR inside the vault, all of which you have to retrieve in order to get the TWO-STEP VERIFICATION achievement.

Before you open the vault, you have to know that guards will be alerted if they ever see that the vault door is opened. Bears repeating that there is a chance that the two UGs on NW GF will enter the vault tunnel.

To open the vault, place the keycard you're currently holding (the one you took from US briefing room, remember?) on one of the card slots. Then head to the table outside camera spawn point 1 (cafeteria) to get the second keycard. Once two keycards have been placed, a timer on top of the vault door will start, the door will open in 60 seconds.

Once you're done, exit through NW rear exit. There is a big chance that a PC will be waiting in the rear exit airlock, this guard will most likely hear you if you ever attempt to saw open cage 01, 02 or 03.

ROUTE OVERVIEW

1. Scout NWA (open shipping crates on the way)
2. Check camera room 1
3. Check camera room 2 (optional: Kill UGs)
4. Kill Civilians, PCs
5. Saw open loot cages, open shipping crates, open vault
6. Exit

STEP 4: SECURING SOUTH WAREHOUSE LOOT

*** There will be an extra step for you here if the loot you need are assault rifles. Before you make your way from NORTH WAREHOUSE to SOUTH WAREHOUSE (via NW rear exit through back alley), sneak into the courtyard to find if any rifles had spawned here. The only spawn point I know of is on the table close to the SW side entrance.

Now you're halfway through the mission, from the NW rear exit, hug the wall at the edge of the map and make your way to the back alley, while looking out for the UG that will patrol the back alley (he stops in front of the dumpster, never going near the SW rear exit). You can place a sensor mine near the dumpster to prevent from running into him. (Important to note that this is the same guard that patrols in and out of SWB)

From here on your route is just as mentioned before (THE HEIST MEXICO PART 1 STEP 1), enter through rear door, place sensor mines if you haven't already, they should let you know where are the two guards near the area. If the guards are in either SWC or SWA, you can saw open cage 08 (SWB). Repeat this for cage 07 and 09.

No need to worry about the civ in SWB, he will not bother you if you don't bother him. He will not hear your saw, or spot you if you stay crouched on the catwalk above him.

Then, proceed to check the shipping crates marked below:

SHIPPING CRATE LOCATIONS (SW)

Bringing the loot back to the hangars can be tricky. You can either risk it and bring the bags straight from the front entrance, across the runway past the two PCs chatting outside spawn point 1, OR you can go the long but secure route which is back where you came from, through back alley, NW rear exit to front entrance, and then finally hangar.

If you have not secured NW, then it's best to use the former option. Killing the two PCs is also an option, but I tend to avoid it and take the long route instead.

STEP 5: SECURE HANGAR LOOT

This step can be done at any point during the mission. With the cameras down, and no guards patrolling the hangars, you can place the drill down and simply wait.

ESCAPE
Nerves will probably get you here before the guards do. Wait for your window as long as it has to, and when it comes, do not hesitate.

Step 1: REFUELING THE PLANE

Find the fuel tank, connect the fuel tank to the generator. You will be pretty exposed here as you are required to run around the courtyard connecting the hose.

Fuel tank and generator spawn locations:
(THAT I KNOW OF, IF I'VE MISSED ANYTHING PLEASE TELL ME)

** RED indicates FUEL TANK, BLUE indicates GENERATOR

FUEL TANK SPAWN LOCATION AT NW (Outside forklift area)

CONNECTING HOSE TO GENERATOR

Step 2: Open the hangar (airplane) gate

Before you can connect the hose all the way to the plane, you will need to open the hangar gates. The control switch is located right next to the gate.

Step 3: Wait

Step 4: Refuel the generator

Gasoline spawns all around the map, there will be multiple gasoline spawned at once so they are not hard to find. Throughout the mission it is most likely you will accidentally encounter one. Some spawn locations I've noted are:

INSIDE NWB, BESIDE THE SHIPPING CRATES

OUTSIDE LOCKER ROOM

AT BACK ALLEY BEHIND SW, NEAR REAR EXIT

Step 5: Wait

Step 6: Open the runway gates

FINAL STEP OF THE MISSION
Runway gates switch location is always at AIRLOCK, SW. The switch is placed right next to the front entrance. Reminder: a total of two UGs patrol in and out of this room. One from outside the warehouse, and one from inside. Always sixth sense it before charging in.

Once the gates have been open, make your way back to the hangars.

Step 7: ESCAPE

YOU DID IT!

Thanks! I was worried if I've crammed too much irrelevant details into one guide and made it more confusing than it needed to be.

God damn, this is one thorough guide. A year or so ago I attempted to solo stealth the heist on death sentence, and I tried not to rely too much on video guides, but it ended up taking me quite a few hours to finally pull it off with all loot. This guide would've made it a breeze.
