I dunno just a preference thing I guess... I find BLM's to be more trouble than they're worth considering you're just hording spells with them for crucial normal battles and during boss fights they're spells are fairly weak sauce any way.... you'd be better off casting haste and temper on your Monk / Fighter.
My feelings are higher base INT and INT/MP stat growth on Black Mages and thus higher spell damage with guaranteed INT growth in addition means BLM will be doing more damage per cast. Optimisation is not so important outside of solo/mono runs of FF1, by the time we're hitting endgame ethers etc will be plentiful, during progress the higher MP pool Black Mages sport over their counterpart Reds due to their base INT increasing MP growth with more middling stats for magic on Red means for me that if I wanna cast, exploit weaknesses or wipe groups, Black Mage is my personal choice with less frequent need to top up MP during game progression. Red does get the utility of solid "Attack" button options all the way through in the form of swords which can also exploit weaknesses, BLM catches up some with Cat Claws or Murasame if it isn't being given to the Red or White.
