We will navigate to the runme.exe file and troubleshoot compatibility problems.

These file, you will find inside your .../Steam/steamapps/common/X - Beyond The Frontier folder (see pic below). Do NOT troubleshoot the X.exe file. Only the runme.exe ;)

• Right-click now on runme.exe, do not go to settings, but to troubleshoot compatibility and start it.
  
• As soon as windows prompt you to chose automatically or manually run compatibility mode, ONLY chose the lower, manually way to troubleshoot it.
  
• Chose at next: "The program opens but does not display properly." and click next:
  
• Now you will get promped to a list of possible issues. Check two boxes: 1.) The program does not display correctly with the large scale settings. 2.) Error message: The program must be run in 65,536 color (16-bit) mode.

On my computer, there was no native 4:3 resolution available, that is higher then 1280x960. (By the way, there no real need for making it higher).

But we can create every resolution we want, with the following steps:

Go into your NVIDIA settings and chose "change resolution" at the left.

Below the box, which shows you all the resolutions, that are provided, you can click on customize:

A new pop up shows up. First check the box that all resolutions, that aren't listed will be visible.

Then, click on Create custom resolution below

Here you can chose any resolution you want. Type in some of my tested and recommended 4:3 ratio high resolutions, which might not appear at your default list:
1600 x 1200
1856 x 1392
1920 x 1440
2048 x 1536



At least click on "Test". The new resolution appears. This will look crappy everytime, dont worry! The program informs you that the resolution you created, are successfully tested and if you like to save it.
Say YES

The program restore your native resolution to your screen. And you will see, that your custom created resolution will be available.



NOTE: x out the window to keep your native resolution. We just created it/them for the game, which can hook them up now.

Start your X - Beyond The Frontier OR X-Tension normally (by desktop shortcut or inside Steam).

UNCHECK all boxes at the popping up screen WHEN you'll start X-Beyond The Frontier:

CHECK most upper box WHEN you'll start X-Tension:



Start it and skip the intro.

At main menu chose options. At the upcoming pop up, chose settings for your graphic card.





Inside graphic settings (pic below):

• Chose your actual graphic card.
  
• For both texture formats, chose 5: 32 bit RGB - otherwise you'll experience heavy FPS losses
  
• Check Multi Texturing.
  
• Uncheck AQC
  
• At least, chose on of your created resolutions with 32 Bit.

Now, you will be able to play X - Beyond The Frontier
OR
X - Tension
on high resolutions with 4:3 ratio :)
