yes and no. Yes as it does dmg, no as in you need a few storage modules filled with torpedoes to do that. Havent seen the math anywhere yet but you probably need well beyond 100 torpedoes for it...
My way of killing the shrimps ? Roadkill ! I just run them over with a max speed Seatruck...is alot funnier :D
There's a dead one for the player to scan, alongside a bunch of ice worm bones hidden way back in that region, but otherwise it is best considered more of an environmental hazard than a living one.
