Intro

Welcome to Ghost Recon: Phantoms

One of the main components that sets this game apart from the others is the elo system. This system also known as the 'Athena Ranking System' is the basis for how you get matched with other players. It is based on quite a few this which will be covered in this guide.
What are the different ranks?
Here are two tables that show the different ranks for the game

There are five different ranks for the system. First is General, then Colonol, Major, Captain and Lieutenant. With each rank there are five subranks or 'levels' that further differentiate between the different elos. It's as simple as Captian I or Captain II. That easy.
How is your rank determined? How do I move up?
It seems to be three main components to determining the rank of a player:
  • The tier of the gear you have
  • Your individual performance (k/d, points per game)
  • Your team performance (objectives captured, kills assists, etc.)

According to the devs, a team player who has the same skill level as a lone wolf will have a higher elo. The lone wolf won't have the kill assists and captures that the team player will have. If you've read my guide on the Recon class then you should know that I emphasize that you should be a team player and it is rewarded when you are with a much better Athena rank.

You need to be level 10+ to be ranked.

same here. do i need to reach lvl 10? with lvl 9 i got a message that i wont be able to play in "Beginner & Lieutenant"-matches with lvl 10+ anymore, unless i'm a Lieutenant but i have no idea how to get a rank

The match-making needs improvement. Sometimes it mixes Beginners with others all the way up to Colonels. The actual skill level of the people can vary greatly. Not enough matches are close enough to be truly a balanced competition. I have nights when I am on the winning team lots and then others that are just the opposite, it would be okay if it all evened out, but it usually doesn't unless you play a very long time. Last night was almost all losses. It would be nice if they would improve it a bit, as it is, it stinks. I look forward to some improvement. A guy can have hope, right?

I have been playing for 2 days now. Just hit level 10. Put me starting out at Major 3. Seems that is the middle of the ranking system. Meaning that I'm an average player, starting out like everyone?

JUST FIND A GOOD FIRETEAM TO RANK UP.

I'm pretty sure k/d doesn't factor in the rank: from my unofficial observations, your final position relative to all the players (on both teams) scorewise is what determines if you rank up or down. If you join in a game right when it ends, your score will go down.

Also, the matchmaking seems to try to pair ranks together: as a Colonel I see more generals and other higher ranks on both teams, and as a Major we would have players of all levels on both teams.
