WX-78 is the fourth unlockable character and requires 960XP or the equivalent of survivng 48 days (you do not have to survive a full 48 day world and you can play multiple, shorter worlds to unlock it. WX-78 is described as hating all living things and this is seen through his many in-game quotes. There are many advantages and disadvantages to playing as this character.

Advantages:
+Can eat any stale or spoiled food without health or sanity drawbacks that other characters would normally experience (CAUTION-This does not mean an immunity to monster meat and other 'horrible' foods)
+When hit with lightning, becomes overloaded with electrical energy (begins to illuminate), and also gains a health boost, speed boost, and unfortunatley a -33 sanity loss.
+Can upgrade with gears. Each gear eaten provides an increase in roughly 20 health, 6-7 hunger, and 13-14 sanity. Eating the maximum amount of 15 provides the player with a massive 400 health, 200 hunger and 300 sanity.
Disadvantages
-With the ability to upgrade WX-78 to a high amount of stats, there obviously would be a disadvantage to the character. WX-78 starts off with a low 100 health, 100 hunger and 100 sanity, which is... tricky to say the least, but luckily there are many ways to obtain gears in don't starve. Digging up a grave with a shovel gives you a rough 3% chance of obtaining a gear, which isn't worth the -10 sanity drain from digging up the grave, but this is why clockwork monsters exist. Clockwork monster come in the form of a knight, a bishop and a rook. With the proper equipment, they can be killed with WX-78's low stats, and they yield an impressive 2 gears per monster. They are usually found around the wooden thing, but they are now more common in the don't starve reign of giants DLC (which is well worth the money for a ton of new content).
-Rain damages it. In the rain, WX-78 takes -1 damage every second or two, however, if sanity isn't your greatest concern, lightning (which commonly occurs during or at the end of a rainstorm) can grant a quite large health increase to balance this out. Alternatively, an umbrella can be created to negate rain damage altogether.

• WX-78 is a character with a lot of abilties, benefits and drawbacks. When starting a new world with WX-78, you should always remember your stat limitations. Approach fights with caution or just don't engage an enemy if it is not key to your survival. A log suit and a spear is key when attempting to fight as WX-78, as its low health can make harder fights challenging without the proper preparation and equipment.

• Another one of your tasks when starting a new world is to find a supply of gears. As i mentioned before, gears are key to survival and finding some can make WX-78 stronger and make challenging fights much less harder. Finding the wooden thing is the best supply of gears you can get, with 5 clockwork monsters that can be easily kited, you are looking at a max of 10 gears, enough to bring you up to 300 health, around 160+ hunger and 230+ sanity, a lot more than other characters such as Wolfgang and Wilson. This makes WX-78 a very strong character during adventure mode, as the constant supply of clockwork monsters in each world can max out its stats by world 2!

• WX-78 is personally, one of my favourite and strongest characters to play as. After getting past its low starting stats and obtaining gears, it can take on most enemies, bosses, and the new giants in the 'Reign of Giants' DLC. After countless trys at adventure mode as other characters without getting past world 1, i found maxwell's door in my WX-78 world. After obtaining gears easily, i quickly progressed through the many stages of adventure mode, even killing deerclops with a log suit and tentacle spike in the chapter 3 'the game is afoot'. This was my first attempt at adventure mode in a while, and after several stages, i found myself completing adventure mode and unlocking the character maxwell. This is why WX-78 is one of my favourite characters to play as, offering good power and balanced play. That is why you should choose WX-78.
