Ceracut! 🧰

It has been quite a while hasn't it? My last submission was well over a month ago and I've been pretty quiet as well. I have been really busy with my bachelor graduation project so I have little to no time to work on skins. But, that doesn't mean I can't make time. Today I would like to show you my most recent project, the Glock-18 Ceracut. With this design I tried to completely modify the Glock's slide and it was quite a fun challenge I set out for myself.

Work Process 🔨

It has been a year since I started learning Substance Painter and I am quite happy with my progression. With this project I decided to really push myself to make some geometric alteration to the slide of the Glock. I have seen many pictures like below online of some amazing slide modifications and wanted to create a version for in CS:GO.

However, unlike real life I can't just get a laser cutter and go to town, and neither can I remodel the glock-18 in-game model. So I decided to give it my best shot through the diffuse- and normal map. I started out with a rough outline of what the cuts would look like. I went through several iterations where the geometry would wrap around the top of the gun from the sides, but through trial and error learned that it would look better if I seperated all the sides.

When I had a rough outline of the shapes I applied a metal material to the slide because that was my initial idea. A sleek looking metal slide with a black grip. Even though this looked quite nice it was pretty bland with the grip. Then I remembered something. Last year I tried recreating a brushed cerakote finish like below, but never really knew how to build this with the smart masks within substance painter.

So with something like this in mind I set out to create my own alternative version of it. And, because I have gotten more efficient in Substance Painter, I managed to get a nice look out of it. I realized that in-game I was testing the material out with a gunsmith finish but it never really looked right. I switched to the custom paint job style to get a better paint look to the finish and this worked a lot better.

For the grip I ended up going with a hexagon design and a pretty basic cutout. This was initially wrapped all around the back but I seperated the sides from the back after some feedback for a more peaceful look to it. Lastly I created a basic magazine design which shows a custom glock logo with bullets visible on the back.

After the magazine was done I messed around with the colours of the slide, magazine, and some buttons. I initially had a single colour but I was affraid this was too boring for most. Therefore I went for a gradient and landed on these colours. The slide goes from a nice vibrant red to a yellowy orange. I went for these colours as they are nice and warm, while also representing good luck, and fortune in eastern culture.

Last Words 👋

I will probably mess around with a different gradient when I manage to get make some free time from my study. I also want to play around with a metallic version of this design where the colour pallete will be a bit more plain, but sleek. I hope you enjoyed this weapon finish and if you have any ideas, or suggestions I would love to hear them.

I'll see you guys in the next submission!

Love,

Hollandje ❤️
