(2 - 4) Karelia Winter

During the Winter War of 1939-1940, the Karelian Isthmus was beset by some of the coldest weather in its history, freezing its rivers and lakes solid, and blanketing the crags and cliffs of its elevated terrain in snow. With Soviet forces approaching the Mannerheim Line, which itself was slowly being lost beneath the weather, and Finnish civilians in full-scale evacuation, Karelia became a wasteland braved only by soldiers. With both the Soviet and Finnish forces acclimatised to the weather, fighting turned to skirmishes, ambushes and entrenching, trading unreliable vehicles for versatile manpower.
