Resident Evil 5 with Gyro Aiming on PC
By AL2009man
Do you want the Light-gun/Gyro Aiming scheme from both Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition/Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition's PS Move (control scheme) and Nintendo Switch Version of RE5 to the PC Version? This guide should help you out.

Introduction
Ever since the release of “How Gyroscopic/Motion Controls can improve the Controller” video, I started a project called “PlayStation Gyro-Optimized Configuration". The project aims to take full advantage of PlayStation Controller's accelerometer and gyroscope function (IMU) to PC Games using Steam Input Gamepad Emulation.

As I was adding Resident Evil 5 on PC to the config collection, there were certain issues that almost made things harder to make a config for due to the way how RE5 handles Inputs. Not only you can't use Simultaneous Controller+Keyboard/Mouse, it also changes the way how the Aiming mechanic works:

Unlike Resident Evil 4; Using Keyboard/Mouse Input change the aiming system into a Traditional Third-Person shooter aiming scheme, replacing the iconic Laser Sight to Crosshair. Here's how it looks like:

Based on my past experience with Resident Evil 5 on previous platforms before playing the PC Version, this new scheme is basically Controller Type D but you can't change it.

and in my personal opinion: it goes against the gameplay style already established by its predecessor, especially when said predecessor's Keyboard/Mouse scheme is the same as Gamepad's.

But thanks to RICK's RE5 Quality of Life Fixes, I found out a way to get proper Gyro Aiming working on PC.
Original Video
While this guide is the simplified version of the initial video I made back in June 5th, 2020, I highly suggest watching it if you want a more in-depth experience on how I got it working.

Otherwise, I will be using my own footages (including one new footage) from that video in GIF format for certain portions of the paragraph as a demonstration.

All footages are directly taken by myself, played on both DualShock 4 and Steam Controller using VSCView Controller Overlay[github.com].
Config Demo: Gyro Aiming

This Config is a traditional Gyro Aiming mechanic as seen in the Nintendo Switch version of Resident Evil 5. Alongside the Traditional Joystick, the Controller's Motion Sensors as a Camera Aim. Both can be used in conjunction for increased precision.

If you want to see full gameplay with this setup, here's a clip of my playthrough of The Mercenaries:

Config Demo: Gyro+Touchpad Aiming

Similar to the Gyro Aiming config, this one combines the precision of Gyro Aiming and Touchpad's Larger range and Snappier turning.

While this is a Steam Controller-specific config, it should theoretically work with third-party controllers with Trackpad/Touchpad function (such as GameSir G5) or On-Screen Touch Controls for Remote Play applications.

alternatively: use DualShock 4/DualSense's Touchpad.

If you want to see full gameplay with this setup, here's a clip of my playthrough of The Mercenaries:

Config Demo: Light-Gun Aim

The PC Version of Resident Evil 5 offers an alternative Aiming method for Keyboard/Mouse users called "Cursor Aim". This changes from Control Type D-style Keyboard/Mouse Controls scheme to a merge between RE4 Wii Edition and RE5 Gold Edition PlayStation Move Control Scheme.

While this config requires more work with some limitations, we can fully replicate the same style as RE4 Wii Edition but with more buttons, additional joystick and no waggles!

If you want to see full gameplay with this setup, here's a clip of my playthrough of The Mercenaries:

Installation Guide - Part 1: Aiming Mechanic + Mod/Patch Installation
Before we begin, you must either install "Resident Evil 5 Quality of Life Fixes by RICK" or "Maluc's RE5 Fixes Patch"[www.sb-online.org] (for Light-Gun Aiming onlu)

To learn more about RE5 Fixes, here's this guide that should give you the details + How to install them:
https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=864823595

Now that you installed the Mod/Patch, you should be able to gain access to the .ini file under
[C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\CAPCOM\RESIDENT EVIL 5].

Regardless of which setup you're going to end up, YOU MUST CHANGE HideInputNotification from "OFF" to "ON".

This will get rid of that pesky [Control scheme changed to controller or keyboard/mouse] message on the top left of the screen while making things easier for ourselves.

But if you refuse to Hide Input Notification message, this is what this looks like for the rest of your playthrough:

After that, we can fully initiate the patching progress and you can pick which Gyro Aiming styles to go with. If you want to switch in between: you have to replace the patched files or verify integrity file.

Gyro/Gyro+Touchpad Aiming Config - Setup

Do you want the traditional Gyro Aiming experience? You must download RICK's RE5 QoL Fixes, as it offers a specific Control Type that replaces the Traditional Third-Person Aiming scheme of Keyboard/Mouse with one that is more akin to Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition's Laser Aiming (KB/M) scheme.

By default, it'd be set to Control Type C. But in case it still to Type A: just head over the In-Game Settings > Keyboard/Mouse Settings Controls and make sure Control Type is set to Type C.

Light-gun Aiming Config - Setup

Do you want the RE4 Wii Edition-style Light-gun Aiming scheme? You either download Maluc or RICK's Patch.

Then, go to the In-Game Settings > Keyboard/Mouse Settings Controls and make sure Control Type is set to Cursor Aiming/Type B.

Since this one relies on the Crosshair as a Mouse Cursor, make sure you either you disable MouseLaser in the .ini config...

However, If you're using RICK's QoL patch, this part isn't necessary as it's part of the in-game options (under Settings > Game Settings). You must change the Laser settings to OFF.
Installation Guide - Part 2: Input Remapping
As you already know, we're using Input Mappers to make all of this possible. From this point forward; I assume you're using one.

While the configs were made using Steam Input Gamepad Emulation, this could also be done with other Input Mappers such as JoyShockMapper[github.com], reWASD[www.rewasd.com] and DS4Windows[ryochan7.github.io].

How to enable Gyro as a Mouse Input.

Let's start with the easiest. Most Input Mappers has an ability to map the Controller's Motion Sensor (Gyroscopic/Accelerometer) as either a Joystick or a Mouse Input. You should map the Gyro as a Mouse Input and set In-Game Mouse Sensitivity to 3, but you can choose which sensitivity that suits you best.

but first; you must have one of the following mainline controllers*:

  • Dualshock 4
  • DualSense Wireless Controller
  • Steam Controller
  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons

*If you happen to have a Third-Party PlayStation/Nintendo Controller, you may have to verify if that controller is capable of Motion Sensor or not. Most Third-Party PlayStation controllers I've seen tends to not support it.

As of this writing: Xbox Controllers are the only one that does not have a Gyroscopic/Accelerometer Sensor. You either have to wait until Microsoft adds Motion Sensor to their Gamepad, buy an Adapter or get a Different Controller that is listed on the list above.

Translating Keyboard+Mouse Bindings to Controller

This is where you're going to spend the bulk of that time matching the KB/M Control scheme to the Controller Layout. But if you don't want to D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself); you can skip this part and head over to My Config section.

This setup is primary designed for the Light-Gun Aiming config, but you must apply it to Gyro/Gyro+Touchpad Aiming config as part of a Mode Shift or Action Layer if you still want to retain Controller Inputs.

as I noted earlier: KB/M control scheme is essentially Controller Type D but worst, and you can't change it unless you switch Aiming mode to [Cursor Aiming].

In regards to the "turret section" in Chapter 2-3, I highly suggest you to create a may have to create an entirely new Control scheme specifically for that section.

Once you finish with that, we will have to deal with the QTEs.

Translating Keyboard+Mouse QTE to Controller

To explain why we need to deal with that: The QTEs are handled differently on Keyboard+Mouse Input: The Contextual Action ( F Key ), Partner Action ( V Key ), Turn Left ( A Key ) and Turn Right ( D Key ) are the four main key binds that you MUST remember for the QTE portion of the game...

The problem begins is when we introduced to Chorded QTEs, when you have to press two Keys at the same time. To solve this; I created my own QTE scheme that should be easy to learn overtime. Make sure you make the Chorded QTE as a Chorded Press.

For ease of use; I will be using the Xbox Face Button Layout as the basis, and it should be similar for Western PlayStation players. If you're using a Nintendo Controller: I highly suggest matching the Xbox Layout for Gameplay reasons.

Keyboard Binding
Controller Input
F Key (Contextual Action)
X Button
V Key (Partner Action)
B Button
QTE: F+V Keys
Press both X+A Button at the same time
QTE: A+D Keys
For Single press: press both Y+B Button at the same time. For rapid "tapping": use the WASD keys you assign to the Analog Stick/D-PAD.

The way how I have my own Gyro Aiming setup works is that I only activate the Mode Shift Button (or Action Layer) to temporarily switch to Keyboard/Mouse Input for the Aiming bit. I intentionally did that so I can still adjust the viewpoint instead of Rotating the Camera.

if you prefer Control Type D-style Control scheme, you can remain full Keyboard/Mouse instead my brute-force solution.

speaking of that-

Regarding QTE Cutscenes

For Cutscenes that contain QTEs is where, depending on which setup and your controller, can either be easy or difficult to solve.

ultimately; there are two choices you can make:

Number 1: Use Mode Shift/Action Layer and adjust the way how the Button/Trigger Activates.

This requires plenty of Trial and Error to find the right balance without making the Input Conflict during a QTE Cutscene. If you're a high-level Mercenaries or Versus player, this should be a high priority as it also affects more advanced combat tricks such as Camera-Depended Quick Aim.

If you have a Nintendo Switch Controller or any controller that can only do Digital Trigger Press, this method may not work for QTE-based cutscene...

Number 2. Make an Action Set for Standard Controller Layout.

If you're unable to complete the QTE Cutscenes, I advise you to create a separate Action Set is essentially a standard controller layout for it.
[Optional] Installation Guide - Part 2.1: My Steam Input Configs
Looks like you skipped the Keyboard/Mouse Binding to Controller section in "Installation Guide - Part 2: Input Remapping"? Don't worry, I created a config so anyone can try it out. Just copy-paste the config link to the Web Browser's Address Bar and it should redirect you to Steam Controller Configurator.

Quick Reminder that due to the game's 1.2.0 patch: the Gyro Aiming and Gyro+Touchpad Aiming configwill not work with the RICK patch. TThe folks will have to update the patch to make it compatible with said patch...at least the last time I checked or read.

I was originally planning to redo the config to solve remnant of bugs that came carried forward to the Steam Deck UI/New Big Picture Mode update, but the RE5 patch put a roadblock. Thankfully: it doesn't affect Light-Gun Aiming scheme.

In addition: Steam Input devs is currently renovating the Gyro mode: so once it gets migrated and the mod added 1.2.0 compatibility: I'll hoping to upgrade it for an far better experience.

(Repost and edited) Is it possible to make the keyboard controls work like in re4, like aiming all-the-way up and down with kb keys only, like u can with the mouse or analog stick while keeping the non-aiming camera movement work like in the 'Cursor aiming' control type.

@DrFox96Live what @$R€Ćl<Q is referring to is a RE4 Wii Edition-style Cursor Aiming system, which Resident Evil 5's KB/M Cursor Aiming and Gold Edition's PS Move Controls scheme does not provide. Unfortunately: this is something I can't provide due to Input Limitations.

However, the Wii-style config does provide something similar to it, but ever since the release of this video: I've change the Right Stick Camera scheme to use the Cursor instead of the general Camera. For that: you just need to hold the Right Bumper.

Compatible Controller Wii?

@Lego Liam neeson After testing with my old config, I ultimately decided to remake the config again. I can't exactly guarantee you that I'll be able to finish, playtest and release the config in the coming days due to IRL work tho.

hello, would you know how to fix this config? if so, what would I need to do to fix this config?
AL2009man  [author] 10 Feb, 2023 @ 7:21am
@Lego Liam neeson i suggest downloading a mod that removes the Input Notification. It should be in Fluffy Manager 5000.

your resident evil 4 one is good, though there is some issue with flashing icons in the menu and in gameplay in RE6, from the last time I played with that config.
