no trick realy, but i can spent a view days irl without unpauzing the game.
Just alot of trying, and counting.

Is there a trick to designing a base like this or is it made through a whole lot of sketching, pausing and measuring?

I would recommend dubs paint shop, just for the colors, and the ceramics mod for nice pure white basic floors and walls to paint. (some other types of materials have a grey overlay when painted)
I dont have any mods that help with shaping, other then more planning. but you still need to comup with shapes and stuff.
But it can sometimes help to plan a room the other way around. Starting with the furniture and see if you can make a nicely shaped room around that. then see if you can stack/rotate those rooms in to paterns.

what all mods are you running? i'd like to try to make something like that but i'm pretty bad with the whole creativity shtick. i'll still do my best though! :D

Its part of how "progress render" works, on default it renders the whole map in to a picture. While playing that mod does not chance anything. it might ad a little pause/lag spike when it renders. but nothing to bad, and the game looks like it would be normaly,

I think you can zoom out realy far ing game with the camara + mod, here on the steam workshop.
