Research and unlock everything... (Original TFTD)
By azfalt
This is ment for the original game, no mods or edideted files needed.

I wrote this research guide on a piece of paper many years ago, when i first played the CD version.
I did that so i could remember to do the stuff in right order henceforth.
Others might have typed something similar to be found on the web, if you look for it.

Just added full research tree, with hints of when to research some items.

Some have typed, that they dont get it why they cant research for tier 3 armor or tier 3 craft, well you guys made a mistake in your research plan... Here is what to do:

What to research and when...
Most items is a given what you get after the item is researched.
But a few items only unlock if you have researched something first and in the right order.

Example the DPL cant be researched before you have researced Zrbite.

But to get Magnetic Ion Armor and Leviathan, you have to do as follows:

Research stages:
1. Deep one corpse
2. Aqua Plastics
3. Aqua Plastic Armor
4. Ion Beam Accelerators
(Here most make the mistake of researching lobster man navigator and magnetic navigation... DONT research thoes till later.)
4. Live Deep One Terrorist
5. Ion Armor
6. Lobster Man Navigator
7. Magnetic Navigation
8. Magnetic Ion Armor (Congrats you now got troopers that can levitate in water.)
9. Transmission Resolver
10. Alien Sub Construction
11. Manta
12. Hammerhead (Displacer Sonic and displacer PWT get unlocked for production, if sonic and pwt research has previously ben completed.)
13. Ultimate Threat
14. Live Lobster man Commander
15. Leviathan (you now got the ultimate submarine for your troopers and other equipment)

Everything els is prety straight forvard.

Many thought it was due to bugs they couldnt get to research the last stage armor and sub. Unfortunatly openxcom has "fixed" the research tree instead of maintaining the dificulty of the game, to find the propper way to research things.

Stay safe and survive on the submerged battlefields.
Tiny heads up...
When doing missions that are in 2 stages.
When you have located the last remaining alien, leave it be, till you have collected everything and equiped all your troopers to hold max in their inventory.

Why?
Because if playing the original game, the items left behind from stage 1, didnt get auto equiped to your cargo hold for stage 2. So to get everything and maximise your points and economic outcome from sales, better pic up all bodies and their belongings, and equip thoes into your inventory.

Things on the ground in the transit area of artifact site is left behind aswell as if they were on the ground outside of transit area. So only equiped items get transfered on to round 2.

"Watch thoes corners... "... especialy below deck.
(Almost) Full Research tree. Research of technicians and squad leaders are left out.

Beware of Live Aliens:
Navigator of any kind, researched to soon will prevent further research towards Magnetic ion armor and Leviathan
Deep One terorist researched sooner then listed above will prevent further research towards Ion Armor. You can however still research magnetic Ion armor and Leviathan, if steps towards Lobster man Navigator is followed.

Technicians reveals Alien sub types and usage, Thou tosoth and lobsterman show correct types, where others might give wrong info of some craft types... (original game only)
Squad Leader reveals alien technology, alien terror missions, abductions, and so forth.

Commanders other than Lobster man will prevent research of leviathan, so dont research those untill after you get a lobster man commander researched. Other commanders wont reveal anything.

Best way to defend bases is to create bottlenec area, subpens conected with lift, lift conected to a living area where your troopers will spawn at defence situation, keep area between sub pens and other base facilities free, so aliens have to move trugh subpens towards the lift and living quarter.

Keep your troopers behind closed doors at the end of each turn to prevent them from getting killed by an alien DPL attack.
When only 1-2 aliens remain and they start to panic and go beserk move out your troopers from defence possions. Troopers with MC defence ability below 80 can be taken over by Tosoth Mindcontroll. Troopers with MC defence ability below 50 can be taken over by aquatoids.
Troopers with MC defence skill below 90 can be jammed to pannic.
So if you want a team of perfect aquanots, you should hire a lot of these and put them into a base with 5 or more mc labs, then you can sack those with low skills, and move those with mc defence skills above 90 to your main offensive base of command.

Troopers with MC attack skill above 70 can mindcontroll tentacults and bio drones at random, with skill at 90+ troopers can mind controll tentacults and bio drones in first attempt every time. Tentacults are the fastest, toughest alien to mindcontroll. Bio Drones tend to explode when shot at, so stay at safe distance... unless you teke them out by stun weapon.
Bio Drones - terror unit that follows Lobster Man & Tosoth.
Tentacults - terror unit that follows Tosoth.
Deep One - terror unit that follows Gillmen (Early terror missions).
Celcenite - Terror unit that follows Aquatoid.

Ur welcome, thou itts not a game glitch, the developers just made the game a bit more dificult than UFO:defence. It was intentional thou a bit harch way to somhow make it impossible to complete if you did a research mistake.

Thou i think it makes it more realistic to play, because in reality any mistake kan lead to downfall aswell.

Thanks for making this! I've had games that were all for nothing because of glitches like that, so it's believe me when I say that I really appreciate this dude!
