[Review] Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
By TheFryingPan
This is my review of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Since it is a Nintendo Switch game, I can't make a traditional review for it on Steam, so I made it this way instead. If you have a Nintendo Switch, then consider buying this game.
It is said to be a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is not about that. Instead, it is about time travel and how they prevented the great battle that devastated the world of Hyrule. So this game shows how they were informed about the future events, and managed to prevent them.
I'm not a huge fan of this game's genre, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

Introduction
In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, you get to experience the world of Hyrule before and during the great calamity that destroyed the world in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
You get to play not only as Link, but also as Zelda, Impa, the Champions and many more iconic characters from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Fight your way through the story in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity to prevent the events that lead to the world's destruction.
Genre
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a Hack-and-Slash Adventure game, based off of the story of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
There are story missions and side quests where you spawn in a specific part of the map, and fight against hordes of enemies to complete tasks, defened fortresses, and even to take down enemy fortresses.
The game is based around having up to four playable characters per level/quest (which you can switch between whenever you want to) and fighting against hundreds or thousands of enemies.
Gameplay
Like I said, you play different characters with their own special powers, abilites, and different weapon types. You fight against hordes of enemies as you play through the story.

There are also Divine Beast-quests where you play as a Divine Beast, which is a huge robot/tank type vehicle, and you travel across parts of the map while fighting against thousands of enemies.
In regular battles you might sometimes get up to around 1,000 eliminations, but in the Divine Beast-modes you can easily rack up 5,000+ eliminations, sometimes even 8,000+.

There are secrets and collectibles hidden across the levels, but you can't explore the map freely. While not playing/doing a quest/mission, you are stuck at a map screen where you can visit shops, level up characters and weapons, or select challenges and missions.
Graphics and Art Style
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity has the same art style and graphics as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which I absolutely love. The art style is very unique and I love that they kept the same art style in this "prequel" to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Sound and Music
There's not much to say about the sound and music in this game. I think it fits very well and I like the music, but there's nothing super special about it. It's not quite as outstanding and unique as the music and sound in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Story and Lore
The story is based off of the story of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and it is about how a guardian travelled back in time to warn Zelda and her friends so that they could prevent the events leading up to the great Calamity.

For a more detailed explanation of the story, read below. However, I don't recommend doing that if you want to experience the whole story for yourself, which I think is best.

The time travelling guardian was built be Zelda when she was a child, and since then it has been in her room. During the great Calamity, it travels back 100 years to warn her. Link and Impa find it during the Battle of Hyrule Field, and bring it to Zelda.
They travel to an ancient lab and find out when the attack will happen, so they try to prepare. The recruit the champions that were originally defeated, but this time, those champions get help from Link and other characters from the future. The party travels to the Korok forest and get the Master Sword. There, they also meet Astor, the "Prophet of Doom", who tries to help Ganon become stronger. The characters from the future are Sidon, Yunobo, Teba, and Riju, which all play an important role in the story of both games.
They defeat the Blight Ganons and defend Fort Hateno, which is also where Zelda's power awakens. Her father is thought to be dead, but when aiding Hyrulian troops on the Great Plateau, Zelda finds him, alive.
Eventually, they all travel to the castle and face Ganon. They defeat him and the tragic events are prevented.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strenghts
There aren't many outstanding things about the game, but there is one thing I really like. That is the split-screen two-player mode within the game. If you want to you can play with a friend, which is a lot more fun than playing alone.

Weaknesses
I don't really see any weaknesses with this game, so there's not much to say here. I guess the amiibo rewards aren't very good, so that's one thing I wish was better.
Amiibo
If you want to spend some money on Amiibos, you can get items within in the game.
If you already have Amiibos, or if you have other games to use your Amiibos in, then go ahead. But in my opinion, the rewards in this game are not good enough to buy an Amiibo for. If you don't already have one, you should probably not buy one just for this game.
Numeric Score
Overall, this is a pretty good game with a cool story and fun gameplay.
It's not one of the best games I have played, but it's definitely a good game!
I would say this game is 8/10.
