Windows 10 dgVoodoo Instructions
  • 1.) Install via steam
  • 2.) Copy the steam.dll file from your ..\steam\steam.dll main directory into your Railroad Tycoon 3 main directory (if you get the missing steam.dll error when launching)

  • 3.) Download latest stable dgVoodoo Here (2.72 latest currently)[dege.freeweb.hu], this allows the game to run on modern graphics card with better performance and graphics including at 4k stable.
  • 4.) Extract dgVoodoo folder into its own folder. Copy dgVoodooCpl.exe and dgVoodoo.conf into the main Railroad Tycoon 3 main directory, copy the D3D8.dll file found in ..\dgVoodoo2_72\MS\x86\D3D8.dll to your ...\Railroad Tycoon 3\ main directory

  • 4.) Run dgVoodooCpl.exe in your Railroad Tycoon 3 main dir >> go to DirectX Tab >> Set VRAM to 1024 MB >> Apply >> Okay

  • 5.) Done! If you're okay with 1600 x 900 setting. Turn all the graphics settings on in-game, Uncheck "Disable Hardware T&L" (Vista fix)

Multiplayer General Info
  • 1.See this Community MP Launcher here (released in 2019): https://steamproxy.net/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1736500757
  • 2. LAN multiplayer works great in this game (depending on certain scenarios), online was being worked on by FlorianF who may need help if you know how to reverse engineer code (his launcher currently only does version checks, I dont think MP syncing is improved at all).
  • 3. The most stable vanilla MP scenarios:
Mississippi Valley, Russia, and South East USA.
  • 4. Many MP Scenarios found here:
    https://discord.com/channels/362797476484218880/625366622495965194/796947501067796480
Join Railty3 discord and find the direct downloads for those MP Scenarios (multiplayer-maps channel) or find them on Hawk Dawg manually in map section

Also note that I've heard users using a free service called ZeroTier to connect LAN games via the internet.
Visa Fix only if guide did not work
Install Vista Fix[hawkdawg.com] found under "Other unofficial patches" Vista Fix

Read me install instructions here[hawkdawg.com]

Basically the original company doesn't exist so the game downloads to a broken state for Windows 7+ machines and you're downloading a engine config file that disables T&L graphics setting.

Follow the guide after verifying the Vista Fix worked and you're able to launch the game.

Once dgVoodoo is installed, Uncheck disable T&L.

Some Screenshots at 1080p
These were taken at 1080p:
Conclusion
I've played the game without crashing for 6-8 hour sessions. In multiplayer as well on stable recommended maps. Even late game with 4+ AI and 100s of trains running cargo on large maps.

Hopefully this guide helps.

For windows 11 users, if you are getting wierd graphical glitches in game. Make sure to UNCHECK Disable Hardware T&L. Then restart the game. It should fix it.

Also everyone should get the unofficial 1.06 patch as it fixes a lot of stuff and its compatible with this set up. I also suggest going to your nvidia settings and capping the FPS to 60 or something, otherwise it renders too many frames and heats up your PC.

When I try to sart the gane the first time, it crashes after showing the loading screen. Every subsequent attempt gets me the erro message "Could not find Steam", followed by a browser opening showing steampowered.com . Anyone else seeing this?

I did this, and couldn't get it to work. But I figured out a fix. I'm on windows 11.

I'm using 1920x1080, so i used to the resolution tool. But in the dgVoodoo settings I set the resolution to 1920x1080 also, which the guide didn't say to do.

Works great.

You gotta be kidding me. Why did that work? That's rhetorical, please don't answer because I won't understand. Thank you, you genius. I can play with my trains now. :)

"For anyone getting kicked back to desktop, I found that spamming esc/clicking/whatever to skip the intro movie then trying as hard as physically possible to click something in the main menu got it to stay up. It's some kind of resolution problem because pre widescreen patch (now @ 1920x1080) it was way worse with having to do that, but now at 1080 it opens fine once you skip the intro video."

Im not sure what it is but im on Windows 11 and ive done this, it works, but after I still have to spam click to get to the intro and then after I skip it. Even when starting a new scenario and leaving it. Idk what it is but its a pain to have to keep jumping through hoops just to play a game

Can confirm that the Voodoo fix works with the disc version of the game on Windows 10, just make sure you copy the D3D8.dll file from the ZIP to your Railroad Tycoon folder
