In 2005, our fearless foodie leaders set out on a mission to create a truly memorable, dynamic food shopping experience. It would be the ultimate in food fun, exploration, innovation and LOVE, a place where you could find exciting, new products, learn about cooking and dine with delight — the kind of place food lovers longed to shop. From that passion and knowledge for all-things epicurean, a food shopping, cooking and dining destination unlike any other was born.

Market District’s dedication to deliciousness dates back to 1931, when our parent company, Giant Eagle, Inc., was founded in Pittsburgh, PA. Giant Eagle serves more than five million customers annually through nearly 420 food retail locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana. Not just that, but it is one of the 40 largest privately held and family-operated companies in the USA, ranked number 27 on Forbes magazine's list of the top U.S. private companies.

We launched the first Market District store in our Pittsburgh hometown in 2006. We’ve quickly expanded throughout Western Pennsylvania and Ohio, and in 2015, we took our enthusiasm for food further west, opening in Indiana. That’s 13 Market Districts, plus one Market District Express in the outer South Hills of Pittsburgh — a smaller version of our signature shopping and dining concept.

Although each store is a bit different, catering to local appetites, most are known for serving up the many pleasures and possibilities of food. Expect the freshest local and exotic produce, seafood and meats, more than 400 artisan cheeses, a European-inspired charcuterie, housemade candies, extraordinary baked goods and a noted bottle shop. Some locations even have restaurants and curbside grocery pickup services!
