Getting Started
Hello and welcome to my ninth guide here on Steam.

Are you finding it difficult to get anywhere beyond your comfortable luxury lounge? If you are, maybe this short guide can help you with those first few steps in the world of SKYHILL!

Contained within are what I have found to be the most important 10 rules to getting started on your journey to eventual freedom and safety.

This will be a short guide for me at least. One that I may expand, add to or alter, if additional strategies reveal themselves through my time with the game. But only if I find anything new that isn't covered in the existing great guides made by dallasm15 and EhrMehGehrd. Which you should check out!

These rules were divined playing Normal difficulty.

PLEASE NOTE that the guide will be subject to changes if I am convinced enough to upgrade the content held within.

Disclaimer: All images are taken from the game and are the property of the game's owners. I only use them here for illustration purposes.
Rule #.1

Only craft when you have to.
Think before crafting anything that you do immediately intend to use. Resources in this game are limited and if you use one item prematurely, you may or may not find another one for the entire game. This will make it impossible to craft a better item when it is needed.

i.e. Using an egg with water for instance to make a boiled egg, may mean that the meat pie with higher hunger elimination you could have made later on, won't be possible.
Rule #.2

It is better to hit than to miss.
It is better to hit than to miss. Afterall if you cannot land a blow on your enemy chances are you won't cause it damage. If you don't cause it damage, it will remain there like a bad smell. This is why I always put points solely in ACCURACY until it reaches 13.

Raise ACCURACY to get at least 70% to hit on the head location. This will be invaluable early on.
You wont need better weapons for a while. So SPD and STR can wait.

DEXTERITY will be next but as long as you have some means of healing DODGING wont be that important. Especially if you can take down an enemy in half the time it would otherwise take.

However - it should be noted that when you reach the lowest most levels, this strategy will cause problems with the greater threats you will find. Especially given that you will probably want higher stats to wield weapons that cause higher amounts of damage to your foes.

To remedy this, there is a trait that allows stats to be reset during your playthrough.
Rule #.3

Fight smart! Aim for the head.
Initially look to aim for the head or the part that takes most damage. In combat use the attack with the best chance of hitting, before the one causing the highest damage.

Preferably have at least 70% to HIT CHANCE with your choice of attack.

HEAD attacks should normally be the first choice. To achieve this the ACCURACY STAT will need to be around 15 points or more. So you will need to be at least at level 3.

If to HIT CHANCE is less then consider using TORSO attacks until the enemy's hit points are low enough that it can be finished off with an ARM attack. As this usually has the highest base HIT CHANCE of the three [attacks].
Rule #.4

Note the floor when getting on the elevator. So you can return to it.
When you use the elevator always remember what floor you are on, to return to it. There is no indication when you get back into it from the VIP lounge where you last were, other than the possible floors you can go to. These though do not tally up exactly.
Rule #.5

Fix every elevator panel.
The lower you get the more invaluable it is to get back to the VIP lounge on the top floor. In order to do so the electricity must flow continuously from the level your character is on, to the penthouse floor, or the elevator will not work completely.

Try to have the parts available but if you have the extra food, use the brute strength method. Just make the attempt even if you lose an item.

How you use the elevator becomes even more important the lower you get. It is essential to avoid tough fights in the central shaft by bypassing the floor the mutant is on, for a floor lower down.
Rule #.6

Don't attack the overweight enemy with the VENOMOUS spit.
Flee if you have to. This sucker will give you a bad dose of hee-bee-gee-bees if you cannot kill it in one shot. Once it has been injured it will shoot a large dose of venom into your character. Making you lose health as well as gain hunger with every step taken.

Only take on this fat enemy if you have an ANTIDOTE ready or can craft one after the fight is over.

They usually begin to appear from floor 70 and lower.
Rule #.7

DIY at the penthouse suite.
This is a conditional rule.

If you have lots of FOOD - upgrade the bed. As much as you can. Return to the VIP floor to craft.

This is the easiest way to recharge HIT POINTS if you have lots of FOOD. (And usually I do find more food than health kits.) There is also the chance of gaining HIT POINTS without decreasing HUNGER points at all. Upgrade the door a level to. To stop the bed bugs biting. For this reduces the effect of bad dreams, affecting how much health is regained.

If you have lots of MEDKITS, look to upgrade the kitchen or workbench instead. For you wont need sleep as much, at least until your healing situation gets worse.
Rule #.8

Retreat is the better part of valour.
If you find yourself against a mutant that is beyond your current abilities retreat. It is better to live to fight another day, than to die needlessly. Early on this will mean being wary around most enemies. Later as you descend the tower, the female contortionist and the giant make for formidable enemies which can kill in two or three hits.

In terms of navigating the central shaft, mutants can only be avoid by taking the elevator on a floor above to another floor below. But this will not always be possible. Some fights cannot be skipped.

Any mutant in a side room can be avoided at the cost of not getting any badly needed resources in that room or on the mutant's person. Just back up and go downstairs.
Rule #.9

Addiction may just save your life!
There is plenty of choice when it comes to which trait to pick for your first few games. What you can choose will depend on which Traits you have been unlocked. My personal favourite though is to have the Addict trait active.

The reason for this is two-fold. Depending on your luck you may get alot of rotten food which will just go to waste. If you do and you have this trait, then not only can you make use of an otherwise worthless resource but it will increase the benefits from favouring an eat and sleep strategy to keep your health high.

Rule #.10

Vending Machines
Make a note of the floors that contain a working vending machine. Its probable that you will find many coins especially towards the lower levels and have many to spare. But by the time you do the vending machines will either not be there or be broken.

Furthermore make a note of at least one type of vending machine you find: Health, Food and Materials. Its possible that only one of a certain type may exist in this incarnation. I've played at least one game where no medical vending machines spawned.
Cheerio....

If you are reading this far, thanks for doing so. If you disagree with any of the rules - by all means let me know which one(s) and what you would replace it with. If I agree with you, I will change those rules with those suggested. I never said I knew everything about this game! :D

And so ends this albeit very short guide to getting started in the world of SKYHILL. All that remains to do is to wish you a successful trip down to the tower's lower levels and if you find some beers bring them back up to the VIP lounge where Ill be waiting.

Well what are you waiting for...... go..... shush...... vamoose!

May Mother Luck be with you.

It's not really a gamble, Two Clicks. One simple example (I've forgot the exact numbers):

Attacking mutant A in the head deals 10 dmg on average and has 50% chance of hitting
Atacking mutant A in the torso deals 5 dmg on average and has 80% chance of hitting

Seems rather straitforward: multiply the probability and the dmg and get your expected dmg. In this case. it is indeed better to aim for the head

Attacking mutant B in the head deals 10 dmg on average and has 40% chance of hitting
Atacking mutant A in the torso deals 6 dmg on average and has 85% chance of hitting

In this case (despite it being a gamble) it's still better to go for the torso. I can't recal the real numbers, but I've had a knife and have fought rokies and neighbours bearing this sort of calculations in mind.

Thanks for a quick answer, Two Clicks.

Multus - Point one. The operative word being sometimes, so its a gamble. Point two. Yes, the balancing of HP and hunger with using corrective items is a core strategy. If you are lucky to have food and bandages in equal measure or can take the hit for the time it takes to find enough bandages to keep you from dying. Which is why I holding back on the resources to see what you. Thanks for posting.

Rambo - Sorry for the late reply, I must have missed the alert. Thanks for the kind words.

Sometimes, hitting torso can deal more damage on average. It's also prudent to hit the arms to avoid overkill.
Rotten food saves more hp than it robs you of: say, you get a rotten cherry, your expected changes are +6 hunger and -4 hp, but starving means that hunger is equivalent to double the amount of hp, so the expected hp gain in case of starvation would be +8, which is comparable to a bandage. The trick is to have meds to realize this potential.

@FuZZyNutZ: All items get upgraded on the VIP floor. The place where you start. There is a table (workbench) there, on the left of the screen. Go there and craft items and upgrade the workbench, door and bed to increase their effectiveness.

How do you upgrade the workbench and other items please? Not seeing it in the UI
