since the game forces you to have 2 controllers to play co-op, here's a trick that works for people only have one controller

Download and Install Virtual Controller
go to settings > io devices > virtual > setup > x360 gamepad (optional ) > install ( pc restart in the end ) > boot up pc and start the software again > go back to the setup section > now this time click on enable > then config > PLUG IN
also enable the xbox config in steam big screen > settings > controller
HAVE FUN

the feature has already been added to the game itself
just go to options > controls > control devices for co-op > keyboard & controller

Version 1.0.165 Feature addition and improvement:
Co-op with Keyboard & Mouse and one controller: Ability to play co-op with Keyboard & Mouse + one controller (local and remote play).
