Raid towns at night to get the 'outdoor' items like tools/planks/baskets - there's only one or two villagers wandering with torches so steer clear of them and crawl around buildings taking things.
If it's daytime, check indoor chests in houses as long as theres no one sleeping in there. Even looking into a crate with nothing in it will penalize you if theres a witness.
Dont sell stolen goods back to the village (they'll be red), but you can use the items/tools yourself or give them to your villagers at work.
1) I spend the first day of the season pretty much walking the map. Many of the goods found are pretty expensive and worth selling.
2) Get my hand on flax seeds and fertilizer. This is the big game changer. Adding a barn and tailoring shop to it makes the profit even bigger. From 8x10 field of flax + the Linen Cloth I am creating from it I easily make 10-12 thousand coins per year. Just from that. Having a mine closeby I clear it out every season, making tools for myself and also selling tools adding 2-3 thousand coins per season.
