Commonly referred to as "one of the cleanest and most elegant aircraft designs ever built, the Hughes H-1 was built in 1935 by Howard Hughes and Glenn Odekirk primarily as a record breaker.

Capable of speeds over 300kts, it broke the world speed record and the US transcontinental speed record.

Unfortunately it was the last private enterprise to do so, all others since then have been military
