Intro : Beat of the Rising Sun
So, you just got this game, played it and while you think that the game is ok, you couldn't help but have that nagging feeling in your head, like the music somehow isn't all that good for you.

Perhaps you prefer to have something different other than synthwave, like some Metal, pop, Memewave (Hey, there are people who love to listen to Meme music, don't shoot the messenger), techno or even..... Eurobeats.

Well, there's some good news. It's possible to bring in your own "Legitimate"* music into slipstream and enjoying the game the way it was meant to be for you.

* This also means a way to bring free royalty music to avoid being muted on streams.
Getting started: Speedy Speed Boy
In this section, we will cover what you need in order to get the custom soundtracks into Slipstream.

You would need these things

Music, and of course it needs to be in either of these formats.
  • OGG
  • WAV
General know how to navigate your way into folders as well as creating them
Copying and pasting files.
Converting Files to another file format, if needed.

Sounds simple and that's because it is, let's get started.
Creating Folders, Copying and pasting & converting MP3 to OGG : Save Me
This section is where you do most of the work to make sure that it all goes right.

Now it doesn't matter if you bought the game on Steam or GOG, both of them have the same folder for all of your settings and ghost files, that is where your music should be going to.

At this point, you would be asking "Where is this folder that you speak of?" well depending on what operating system you are on, it should be like this. Please note to enable "show hidden files" if you are attempting to find these folders with simply clicking with the mouse.

  • On Windows: c:/users/username/AppData/Roaming/andsorGames/Slipstream/
  • On MacOS: [user home]/Library/Application Support/andsorGames/Slipstream/
  • On Linux: /home/username/.config/ansdorGames/Slipstream/

When you go to the folder for the first time, you would notice that there is no music folder, that can be easily remedied by creating one, either right clicking the empty space of the folder and clicking on New Folder/Create Folder or clicking on File and Clicking on New Folder/Create Folder and type in "music" (without the quotation marks, of course).

After that, you have a new folder ready for your music to go in, as shown on this image.

And now the labour part comes, double click on the music folder and then bring another folder up where your music is stored, highlight the one's you want (sub-folders included) and use whatever method is comfortable for you to use in copying (I would use Ctrl+C since it's the quicker way to do).

Once you made sure you copied the files and folders that you want, head to the music folder and again use whatever method is comfortable for you to use in pasting (Again I would use Ctrl+V for the pasting).

Keep in mind that there's a limit on how much music you can have for Slipstream and that limit is 256 files (including the one's in sub-folders).

UPDATE 6-8-2023 (8-6-2023)
Since the latest versions of the game have the MP3 deprecated, your best bet is to either have the OGG files natively or converting MP3 to OGG.

Now, how to convert MP3 to OGG is up to you, use whatever method you use that is easy for you, but if you want my advice on what's the best audio converter to use, I'd say Fre:ac. It's GUI with an easy interface to use and it's available on all three OSes mentioned earlier, as well as other OSes like FreeBSD and Haiku.

Link to the official fre:ac site to download[www.freac.org]

Here's the guide on how to convert MP3 to OGG with Fre:ac.

  • Click on File -> Add File (or Ctrl+F) and add the MP3 Files you want to convert. (Or just simply drag and drop the MP3 Files onto the window.)
  • On the selected encoder tab, change it from LAME MP3 Encoder to Ogg Vorbis Encoder, this step is very important.
  • Click on the select button next to the Open button and Output Folder tab and change it to the mentioned folders for your OS
  • Once it's all setup like the image shown at the bottom, either click on the green play button, go to Encode and click on Start Encoding or simply press Ctrl+E to start the conversion of MP3 to OGG files.

Playing your custom soundtracks ingame: Running in the 90's
You created a music folder, you copied & pasted the files into it (As well as converting MP3 to OGG). Now what?

Now, you launch the game just like you regularly do and get straight into the game (Grand Tour, Grand Prix, etc) once the race starts, the custom music should automatically played, but if it is not, hit that pause/menu button and now there should be additional tapes that come alongside with the original soundtrack. Head down to (Select Music) and move either left or right until you can see them, as shown in this image.

Congratulations, you now have your own custom soundtrack on Slipstream, play that music and enjoy!

@Kheryo Done, I've updated a section of the guide to convert MP3 to OGG.

Please update and if possible add a step to convert to ogg for new players as mp3 is no longer supported.
