Here we go for another statue.

"Le Génie du sommeil éternel" the angel of eternal sleep also known as "La statue du souvenir" the statue of memory.

The 19th century is known as the century of grief. The unwillingness to accept the death of loved ones was typical for that era. This particular monument has a purpose as a trophy of memory. "Sleep" can in this sense refer to the denial of someone's death, and the conflict between death, love, and grief. It refers to someone sleeping instead of being dead, which implies the hope to be reunited with their lost friends or family again as if they could wake up from their sleep. The statue represents an angel in grief, with hanging flowers as a symbol of devotion for the death of their beloved ones.

The statue is made at the end of the 19th century by the French artist Horace Daillion (1854-1937). Daillion's statue refers to how man coped with death in that specific period. This statue is located on a roundabout in the center of the cemetery of Montparnasse in Paris. The place is also a well-known touristic attraction because of all the famous novelists, artists and scientists that are buried there. Characteristic of French cemeteries are their tombs surrounded by big and detailed statues, just like this one is as well. The monuments, at that time, were a visible sign of emotion and permanence in the city, which in turn held up a nationalistic feeling as well.
