First time you wake on the beach
I personally get how confusing and chaotic this game seems when you first wake from the beach but hopefully after you have read this guide you will be competent in the ways to survive this unforgiving game.

You spawn with a rock and a torch. The rock is used to gather materials like ores and wood as well as a crappy weapon. The torch is obviously used to see in dark areas and at night.

First things first
You need to get away from the beach. Other noobs and trolls roam the beach looking for fights so getting away should be your first priority.

Check your surroundings
Press the map key [G] and have a look at your surroundings. Notice the POI (Points of interest) and the biome you are in. Desert (yellow) Grasslands (green) Snow (white)

Get your first weapon
Using your rock, hit trees to collect 300 Wood. (making sure to hit the red Xs) Then craft [Q] a spear in the weapons tab.

Create a respawn point
Once you have collected 30 Cloth, craft [Q] a sleeping bag and place it in a safe location. If you have collected anything in particular you want to keep, make a satchel and place it in a memorable spot then bury it, preferably near your sleeping bag. A campfire is a good idea too, especially if you are in snow or desert.

Side tips for first beach spawn

Don't start collecting stone and wood untill you find the place you want to build and you are nearby. - Because if you die you will lose all your resources.
Collect any hemp (the small tree like bushes) whenever you see them, they are valuable to get you started.
Collect any Low grade fuel whenever you see them.

Tips to survive

If you see a person of any level with a weapon out approaching you assume the worst, it will save you alot of headache.
Stay away from gunshots / fighting noises & monuments untill you get a base
Don't stay still or go afk in the open
Water takes alot of time to cross, consider going around bodies of water if you can.
Geared players will most likely kill you, even if you have nothing. So trying to walk near them will often not go well for you.

Having a fighting chance
If you are lucky enough to get 50 cloth and have a sleeping bag placed your next goal should be to craft a bow with some arrows as soon as possible. This will give you a huge leg up in the game and makes a big difference in combat, having a ranged weapon.

Your player over time gets hungry & thirsty. When it starts matter you will notice either a "Starving" or "Dehydrated" status effect on your screen.
Managing Starvation
Your character will start to be "Starving" when your hunger lowers to 40 points (out of 500), you will slowly start taking increasing amounts of damage till either you eat or die.

There are multiple ways to eat including;

Eating Plants Found:
  • Near rivers
  • Grown in or near bases
  • In temperate forests (Appearing red on map)
  • Randomly around
Eating Animal Meat (Make sure to cook first!)
  • Bear (Don't Hunt) - Too powerful
  • Wolf (Hunt) - They can overpower you but are worth the risk
  • Pigs (Hunt) - Also can overpower you but are more likely to run
  • Chicken (Hunt) - Very easy
  • Deer (Don't hunt) - Hard to kill, wait untill you get a bow
  • Horse (Hunt, maybe) - Very easy to kill but can be used as transport
  • Human
Opening Food Crates Found;
  • Near barrels on roads (Flat green square boxes)
  • The Abandoned Supermarket (Flat green square boxes)
  • Outside most monuments (Big square crates) & (Flat green square boxes)
Managing Dehydration
Your character will start to be "Dehydrated" when your thirst lowers to 25 points (out of 250), you will slowly start taking increasing amounts of damage till you either drink or die. When your thirst reaches 0 points you will no longer be able to sprint. You cannot drink water from the beach.

Most food items will hydrate you.

There are multiple ways to drink including;
  • Drinking from lakes and rivers directly
  • Use a water purifier / catcher

Opening Food Crates Found;
  • Near barrels on roads (Flat green square boxes)
  • The Abandoned Supermarket (Flat green square boxes)
  • Outside most monuments (Big square crates) & (Flat green square boxes)
Farming Resources (Nodes / Trees)
In rust you will need to get raw resources to build / expand / upkeep your base aswell as craft. The two main things you will "farm" in rust are "Nodes" & "Trees".

"Nodes"
Nodes are distinguishable rock looking things that are found all around the map (Mainly near cliffs and crevices) They come in 3 different forms as seen below:
(Stone Node) - (Metal Ore Node) - (Sulfur Ore Node)

They can be harvested with pickaxes & some tools but yield more when you hit the glowing parts. You can also obtain more resources per hit / Node by upgrading your tools.

These are the resources gained by harvesting each node.
(Stone) - (Metal Ore & High Quality Metal Ore) - (Sulfur Ore)

"Trees"
Trees are obviously the trees you see on the map, they can be harvested with axes & some tools to obtain wood. Hit them on the red "x" to get more wood. Hit them till they break to get a bonus & upgrading your tools yields more wood per hit / tree.
(Wood)

Hunting (Easiest way to get geared)
If need to get geared quickly the most efficient way is to hunt animals.

I would recommend crafting a Bone Knife (x30 Bone fragments) to harvest dead animals.

Once you kill an animal and use a harvesting tool they will give you a combination of,
Leather - Cloth - Animal fat - Bone fragments - Skull (depending on animal)

Getting some clothes
Clothes are used to protect you from external damage
(Ranged, Animal, Explosion, Melee), Radiation & cold weather.

Using cloth (gathered from animals and hemp) you can make basic clothing.
Burlap Shoes (x10 Cloth) - Burlap Trousers (x20 Cloth) - Burlap Shirt (x20 Cloth) -
Burlap Headwrap (x10 Cloth)

Using the leather (gathered from animals) you can make higher level clothing.
Hide Boots (x10 Leather) - Hide Pants (x45 Leather) - Hide Vest (x50 Leather) -
Hide Poncho (x20 Leather) - Wolf Headdress (x10 Cloth x1 Wolf Skull)

You can also get clothing by hitting barrels and opening creates. Or by buying them at NPC / player shops. (They need to be researched & often require a workbench to craft)
Leather Gloves (x20 Leather x1 Sewing kit) - Pants (x80 Cloth x1 Sewing kit) -
Shorts (x30 Cloth) - T-Shirt (x30 Cloth) - Longsleeve T-Shirt (x35 Cloth) - Jacket (x50 Cloth x2 Sewing kits)

Finding the right location to set up
In rust location is everything, you want to be close to monuments but not too close as it attracts unwanted attention. You also ideally want to be close enough to rivers or a water source and a road. Keep away from building near the beach for now.

Terrian types & Info
In rust there are 3 main types of land you need to be aware of.

Grasslands (Easy) - Most populated with bases
Grasslands is the choice for most players bases due to it having averages in every resource and in that regard can be difficult but it has no hazards other than animals and small areas with radiation.

Desert (Medium) - Most populated with noobs
Has The highest amount of newly spawned players due to the proximity and location of beaches. Will get cold at night averaging -2°C without clothes. During the day you can get the "very hot" trait. Which means you will either need to, walk into shade, remove your clothing or drink water. The desert has lackluster vegetation but more sulfer ore & animals.

Snow (Hard) - Least populated
Will make your character cold in a majority of this space averaging -6°C. (-18°C at night) You will die quickly at night if you don't have the correct clothing / heat source. Has more metal ore.

Creating your first base
When you have found the spot you want to build the first thing you will want to do is craft the right tools for the job to make your house as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Building the base
Once you have used your tools to collect a enough resources, you need to decide what sort of base and how many players it will support. 2x1, 2x2 ect. It is ultimately up to you.

Starter base design i suggest (2x1)

Base design tips

Don't over build! It is so tempting to make a big grand base but the more you build the higher the upkeep & upgrade cost. Starting small also makes you less of a target for raiders.
After 10 minutes of building a base part you can no longer destroy it with a hammer and will need to destroy it by hand, so you need to plan ahead for expansion.
Once you place your tool cupboard it cannot be picked up again. Make sure to plan and place it in the corner for maximum space.
The room with the tool cupboard needs to be the most secure room, if other people have access to it they can destroy your base.
I advise creating an "airlock" at the entrance of your base, basically consisting of a triangle and two doors leading to the outside. This prevents access to you base even if the doors are open.
In your "Loot room" the door leading in should be a double door in a door frame for future upgrades.
Watch out where you put windows, people can easily jump through them at the start so make sure they are hard to reach. And no windows should be in your loot room.
Use terrain to your advantage. (Hills, rocks, trees, water ect)
When you're building a base think about how you would attack it, make it as difficult as possible.

Base safety tips

Make sure you shut every door behind you and to not rush outside as people will take advantage of that.
Upgrade from twig to wood / stone as soon as you can.
Upgrade to code locks & sheet metal doors as soon as possible.
People like to camp in front of bases waiting for the occupants to exit. If you suspect someone is doing this put all of your loot inside your base and go out naked to check.
Try not to lead people back to your base. If you are getting shot at / chased weigh up if you want to disclose your bases location for safety as it can lead to you being trapped or raided.
Have a backup sleeping bag hidden outside nearby your base.
Components From Recycling
Now that you have finished building your house you'll need to work towards getting better weapons and armour.

These 4 core resources are used for pretty much all mid-high level crafting, collect as many of these as you can.
High Quality metal - Scrap - Metal fragments - Cloth

You can obtain all 4 of these resources by using a recycler to deconstruct items.
The recycler can be found at some monuments.
You can get items to recycle from barrels and creates found on the side of roads or monuments.

Recycling Advice
My advice for new players wondering what they should or shouldn't scrap at the beginning of the wipe. Obviously if you need a certain item you should keep it & use your own judgement if you need the items materials.

Used for gun crafting.
Rifle body (Don't scrap) - SMG body (Don't scrap)

Used for item and gun crafting.
Spring (Don't scrap) - Gears (Don't scrap)

Used for mid-high lvl crafting.
Sewing kit (Scrap) - Metal blade (Scrap) - Metal pipe (Scrap) - Tarp (Don't scrap)

Most are used for high level crafting, scrap these whenever you want as they are pretty common.
Rope (Scrap) - (Scrap) - Fuze (Scrap) - Road sign (Scrap) - Sheet metal (Scrap)
Propane tank (Scrap) - Semi-automatic body (Scrap)

Furnaces & Smelting
Furnaces are a craftable way to smelt ores & obtain charcoal in exchange for wood fuel & time. Each slot of ore in the furnace produces simultaneously so its more efficient to split the piles up. Furnaces can be picked up with a hammer if you have building privilege & are empty.

The cost to make a furnace is:
  • x50 low grade fuel
  • x100 wood
  • x200 stone
  • x60s

These are the 3 ores that are commonly smelted in furnaces.
Metal Ore - Sulfur Ore - High Quality Metal Ore

These are the byproducts of smelting the 3 ores.
Metal Fragments - Sulfur - High Quality Metal

Research Tables
Research tables are used to craft blueprints in exchange for a scrap price (fluctuates) and dismantling the item you want to learn. Once you have used an items blueprint you gain the ability to craft it in that server untill the next wipe. Research Tables can be found in a majority of high level monuments. Research tables can be picked up with a hammer if you have building privilege & are empty.

The cost to make a research table is: (Needs Workbench Level 1 or higher)
  • x200 metal fragments
  • x75 scrap
  • x60 seconds to craft
Can be found in some monuments like outpost.
Workbenches
Workbenches are used for a variety of reasons, including to construct more complex items, weapons, ammo, first aid and clothing. (You have to be in close proximity in order to use and get benefits from the workbench)
Warning: Workbenches cannot be picked up again after they are placed.

Experimenting using a workbench is a way to get random blueprints for items you haven't researched. (Will only get the same level blueprint as the workbench)

Workbench Level 1 - Workbench Level 2 - Workbench Level 3

Level 1 Workbench
The cost to make a level 1 workbench is:
  • x500 Wood
  • x100 Metal Fragments
  • x50 Scrap
  • x60 seconds to craft
Needs x75 Scrap to Experiment.
Can be found in certain monuments like outpost.

Level 2 Workbench
The cost to make a level 2 workbench is: (Needs Workbench Level 1 or higher)
  • x500 Metal Fragments
  • x20 High Quality Metal
  • x500 Scrap
  • x60 seconds to craft
Needs x300 Scrap to Experiment.

Level 3 Workbench
The cost to make a level 3 workbench is: (Needs Workbench Level 2 or higher)
  • x1000 Metal Fragments
  • x100 High Quality Metal
  • x1250 Scrap
  • x60 seconds to craft
Needs x1000 Scrap to Experiment.
End Notes
And that's it! I sincerely hope this guide helped you out! :)
