By tsu
This guide will help the player accumulate an unlimited supply of golden keys in Borderlands 2.

This system is disliked among a majority of the Borderlands community, and there is a way to work around it, without using a software to edit your save data. Read on, and find out how you can stock up on a load of powerful weaponry to use against the bandits throughout Pandora!

Introduction / Prerequisites
Borderlands 2 has unfortunately introduced a terrible mechanic - SHiFT golden keys. This system is honestly one of the worst things to happen to Borderlands, in my opinion.

I've made this guide simply to help the people who don't want to scour the internet searching for codes to turn their golden keys into an endless supply of powerful weapons to unleash carnage on their enemies.

NOTICE - YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE GOLDEN KEYS BEFORE DOING THIS.

If you do not have any golden keys, use these code(s) to get some:

W353J-RR6RC-X96R9-C63J3-RJTFW - 5 Golden Keys + Axton's Community Day Skin
5JWBB-9ZX9J-B636C-BBBBT-ZCWXF - 5 Golden Keys + Gaige's Community Day Skin
WJ5TB-BJSZJ-TFB6W-JTJJJ-3Z3CB - 5 Golden Keys + Krieg's Community Day Skin
5B3BJ-XZWFW-T3KRZ-JBJTB-6WST9 - 5 Golden Keys + Maya's Community Day Skin
C35TB-WS6ST-TXBRK-TTTJT-JJH6H - 5 Golden Keys + Salvador's Community Day Skin
53KBB-KXXRC-RZ66Z-WFJBB-WSRZ3 - 5 Golden Keys + Zero's Community Day Skin

If this guide has helped you, please give it a like - it would make my day!

Now, let's get onto the guide.
How to Get Unlimited Golden Keys
NOTICE - DO NOT HAVE BORDERLANDS 2 RUNNING WHILE YOU'RE DOING THIS

Step One - Locate Your 'profile.bin' File Through the Borderlands 2 Folder

This first part should be easy. By default, the file you're looking for can be found by navigating to your documents. The default path to the file is USER > Documents > My Games > borderlands 2 > WillowGame > Save Data > x number > profile.bin.

Step Two - Mark the File as 'Read Only'

Right-click the 'profile.bin' file then select Properties. From here, under Attributes, check the 'Read Only' tab, then apply the change.

Step Three - Open Borderlands 2 and Open the Golden Chest

CAUTION - ONLY DO THIS WHEN YOU JUST WANT TO FARM THE GOLDEN CHEST. IMMEDIATELY AFTER FINISHING UP, DISABLE 'READ ONLY' TO AVOID POTENTIAL PROGRESS LOSS. BEFORE DISABLING, RESTART THE GAME TO REPLENISH YOUR GOLDEN KEYS

Go to Sanctuary and open the chest until your golden keys run out or however long you want to. When you want to stop, just save and quit, then return to the Properties window of the 'profile.bin' file and disable 'Read Only', then apply the change. This will revert the amount of golden keys that you had before you enabled 'Read Only'.

You can do this as many times as you'd like, just REMEMBER TO ENABLE 'READ ONLY' then disable it whenever you've used all of your keys, or are done opening chests.

easier way is to take copy of your profile.bin and make a folder for it after you have 1 key left delete the one in your borderlands folder and replace it with the copy ez keys 24/7

I'm trying this, but not finding any filepath beyond > Save Data > x number > profile.bin
I set hidden folders to be viewable, still nothing there. I tried looking under C as well (as I keep all my data on a D HDD.)
Furthest I could get was the willowgames folder in the default location expected on the D drive.

I am aware there are third-party tools to do this. I don't think everyone wants to download stuff like that, which is why I made the guide.

There exist also a tool called Bordertool 2, I think it's available on both PC and Mac. You can use it to edit the .bin file as well, but at max you can only hold 255 golden keys.

Yeah, the golden key system is really bad in my opinion. I'm happy it worked for you and I am glad you're happy! You're very welcome for the guide! Happy Vault Hunting!

Thank you for the guide, I don't like the golden keys mechanic but out of curiosity I tried your tip. I had 16 keys, used around 4, quit the game and turned off 'read only'. When I rebooted the game I had 26 keys!? Saves me pasting all those shift codes at least! Thanks! Planning to use a key every 10 levels or so just for a bit of spice.
