Problem.
As written in the description, if you have Intel HD, you won't be able to play the game since it will stuck on the first loading screen.

The following conditions are all true (up until 4/1/2014):

1. You have both integrated card Intel HD 4000 or lower and discrete card e.g NVIDIA GT 640m.
2. Integrated card (Intel HD) is active.

You can check the card being active that you have easily by running 'dxdiag'. Here's how:

1. On your desktop, press and hold Windows key, immediately press 'R'.
2. A small box will appear, type 'dxdiag'. Another window will pop up.
3. On display tab, you should see a name of your graphic card. If it says Intel HD Graphics 4000, you're being affected by this problem.

The problem here is that the game can't recognize that the laptop has dual graphic adapters. It only looks up to the primary/active one, therefore NVIDIA card will always be ignored since it is never activated unless the demanding app requests for it. And since the bug exists in the engine (can't render on integrated chipset), the game will never go through the first screen.
How to fix.
1. Bring up your Nvidia Control Panel. Start menu -> type Nvidia into it. Click on it.

2. On the following screen, you need to search for the game's exe and apply the properties: click add and browse.

3. Navigate to your game's folder. Choose valdis_story_AC.exe and click open.

4. Change the option to your High Performance NVIDIA as highlighted.

Done.

Now press apply and try to relaunch the game.

It's ok, I'll just time it, save, quit and start up again. I don't play on my laptop all the time anyway. Just when I'm away. At least windows warns me before the game crashes. and usually I have around 5 minutes before it does that. I'll just live with it.

Do you overclock?

Thanks for the heads up, but unfortunately it doesn't help me as I do have two identical sticks. I always buy them in pairs for the dual channel feature.

Yes I've had that before.

My problem was I was running TWO sticks of DIFFERENT RAMs. The laptop complained like that. When I changed the other stick to match the former one, the problem disappeared.

Make sure you run identical RAM sticks.

Anyone experiencing "running low on memory" and the game crashing? This only happens on my Windows 8 laptop. Everything runs fine on windows 7.

It happens after about half an hour of gameplay and windows tells me I'm low on memory. I've never had a problem with the graphics and have done the above to make sure I don't get anything else funny.

My Specs:
Windows 8.1
Nvidia 730M 2GB/Intel HD 4000
Intel Core i5
8 GB RAM

Maybe someone would find that helpful.
I've had same issue with Skyrim and solved GPU detection issue with Nvidia Optimus fix from Skyrim Nexus. Then I tried to solve similar issue with Valdis Story and it worked!
You can dowload it here: NVIDIA OPTIMUS D3D9 DLL FIX [www.nexusmods.com]
To make it work - just put d3d9.dll from archive to your Valdis Story parent folder and rename D3DX9_43.dll to D3D9orig.dll. Voila! It works. :vsvladyn:

@S7 if you don't have other graphic adapter in your laptop, you're stuck for a while. At least until they patch the engine and/or the game.
