I think if you build 1 it's enough to go the next system. The nausia isn't too bad.

If you don't have them, your people can get nausia.

I haven't gotten to the point of going to another star system yet but does it have any affect if you don't use cyro beds? The tutorial seems to imply it was necessary to have them to go to the next system.
