Fix for choices not appearing after completing an episode [Works for Seasons Three, Four, and Michonne]
By gay bar serving straight shots
An easy fix for choices not appearing after completing an episode. If you've played any Telltale games recently, you've probably run into this. What if I told you that the fix was as simple as dragging and dropping a file into a folder? Because it is.

The problem
(Note: this is a repost of the same guide I posted for Season 4. I decided to put up a second version for S3, so that people can find this guide, no matter what game it is. Don't worry, I changed some words and stuff around, so it's not completely shameless)

A recurring problem since Telltale's shutdown is that newer players are unable to see their choices after completing an episode of the game. Instead of your choices, you're greeted with this message:

Which sucks. Being able to see your choices is part of the experience, and it worked for Seasons 1 and 2, so why doesn't it work for the last few games?

Up until now, nobody has really had an answer for that, much less a fix for it. Most of us assumed that the issue was server-side; a problem that could only be solved on Telltale's end. But as it would turn out, the choice statistics are actually stored client side.

To make things better? This is the result of a single missing file: choice.prop

Now you're probably wondering what choice.prop is. Well, it contains the statistics and strings for all of the choices in the game. By default, this file is located in Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead - A New Frontier (Season 3), although each separate game uses a unique version of the file. The idea is that this file is meant to be updated remotely, IE the Telltale server periodically sends you a new version with more up-to-date stats.

As a side effect of Telltale's shutdown however, this entire process stopped working... including the initial creation of the file. This is why older players can still view their choices when they launch the games: they already have the required file. But for newer players-- that being anybody who started playing after circa September 2018-- the file is no longer created, and thus the game isn't able to show you your choices. The important note is that the game still logs your choices, it's just missing the file needed to actually display those choices.

After realizing this, an extremely simple solution came to mind: take a choice.prop file from somebody who has it, and give it to somebody who doesn't. In theory, it should fix the problem. And it did.

So, without further boring ado...
The fix
How to install
That above link is a download to a .zip file. Included are the necessary file(s) for all three seasons affected by this issue (Season Three, Season Four, and the Michonne miniseries).

You just have to do a simple drag and drop to the right folder, and your choices should now appear when you re-launch the games.

Installation is simple:

  • For Season 3, take the file inside the S3 folder, and put it in C:\Users\[...]\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead - A New Frontier (Season 3)
  • For Season 4, take the two files (S4 requires a second separate .prop file for the character stats) inside the S4 folder, and put them in C:\Users\[...]\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead The Final Season
  • For Michonne, take the file inside the Michonne folder, and put it in C:\Users\[...]\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead Michonne

Replace the [...] with whatever your user/computer name is, and you're good to go. Choices should now appear for you.

And for people not using Windows...
these go to whatever the equivalent folder is on your operating system.

Lastly, since localization is also handled client-side, this should work for all languages the game is available in. No extra work needed on your end.

Regarding copies on Epic, or elsewhere
This should work the same on the PC regardless of where you got the game from. Epic, Steam, or through otherwise 100% legal means (hey, I'm not here to judge)... all of them should create the same folder in the same place. So this guide should work for any version of the game available on PC. If it doesn't, feel free to leave a comment.

And there you go. If you did everything right, you should now have choices again! Now you can finally beat yourself up over your poor decision-making skills, or make fun of someone else's!

I have 3 and 4 on my X box app on PC and 1 and 2 on Steam. When I follow the path it takes me to the telltale games folder, but only has 1 and 2 in it. The X box folder doesn't have A New Frontier (Season 3) in it, or anything. Try to search for files with keywords and nothing. Try to locate files through the X box app in the manage/files and nothing. I tried to install to a specific folder but it says that the game doesn't support install to a specific file haha. I'm not computer smart by any means but I feel I've tried shit ton of things and can't figure it out. If I could afford the whatever money to just buy it on Steam I would as I feel it would resolve all of it. Sorry for the rant and thanks if you read all of this!
