The Mad Lad Hunter Play Style, A Guide for slow animal hunting (Bisons, Buffalos, Red Fox, Coyote, Side-striped Jackal, Wolves)
Tekijältä layongod
If you want to play like Rambo, love to run, scaring animal, don't care about diamonds, doesn't care about being loud and just want to kill a lot. Then this playstyle might suit you.

This playstyle will only work for slow-moving animals especially the big one (Bisons, Buffalos, Red Fox, Coyote, Side-striped Jackal, Wolves) and definitely will not work to fast-moving animals (E.G: The deers).

This is NOT the only way to hunt them.

Ver 1.0: The Original.
Ver 1.1: Added animal behavior and the results for Buffalo.
Ver 1.2: Added the red fox and coyote information.
Ver 1.3: Added the Side-striped Jackal and wolves information.
Ver 1.4: rewrite the multiplayer paragraph so it would be easier to understand.
Animal, Map, Weapon
Target animal:

European Bisons (usually in the middle part and the western part of the map),

Plains Bison (usually in the middle part of the map),

Water Buffalo (usually in the eastern part of the map),

Cape Buffalo (usually in the northern part of the map).

Red Fox (spread quite evenly on the map)

Coyote (usually in the western part of the map)

Side-Striped Jackal (usually in the middle part of the map)

Gray Wolf (usually in the northwest part of the map)

Iberian Wolf (usually in the northeast part of the map)

Animal behavior:
Bison are slow and prefer to avoid conflict.

Buffalos are a bit faster than bison. Buffalos especially the cape buffalos are way more aggressive than any other any animal. Thus for buffalos, you only need to provoke them.

Red fox and coyote tend to avoid conflict but since they have small feet, you can easily after them by running.

The wolves have the same exact running speed as you, and sometimes they are the one who hunts you. They also hunt in packs, so you need to be very careful when they decide to hunt you.

Suggested map:

Hirschfelden, because it is very hilly and rocky with dense forest. What used to be your weakness now becomes your strength. The animal will eventually fear your presence, so some animals due to panic, will "stuck" between the rocks or the trees, and when they are stuck just kill them with your weapon of choice

Suggested weapon for Bisons and Buffalos:

any class 9 rifle preferably the .300 Canning Magnum with polymer bullet (since you will be shooting several lv 9 animals in quick succession) and a sub-weapon. You could choose between:

Shotgun: Miller Model 1891 10ga Lever Action Shotgun with the brass slug

Handgun: Rhino 454 with Flat Nose Hard-Cast

Rifle: King 470DB with Full Metal Jacket

All three are extremely deadly in short-range, but I understand that the Rhino and the King might take some time to be opened. So, if you want to play right away I would suggest you get the Smoking Barrels Weapon Pack to get the shotgun.

Alternatively:
You could bring several Class 9 rifles (.338, 7mm, 45-70, drilling) if you don't have the weapons mentioned above, but I personally think its a waste of weight.

Suggested weapon for Red Fox, Coyote, and the Side-Striped Jackal:
You could bring any shotguns except the miller, you could bring the .223 Docent or the Vasquez Cyclone .45 or you could bring the Focoso 357 or the Mangiafico 410/45 Colt, but the best weapon to hunt them is the .243, simply because it's very powerful for class 2, it has longer effective range than any weapon above, and since you could kill class 2-6 with this weapon, you could use this weapon also to kill other animals, thus reducing your loadout weight.

How to do it

  • Find the animal that you want to kill. Their call is a sign that they are quite near you.
  • Make sure you are quite near to them (~150 m would be just fine).
  • Use your binoculars and find the highest level animal there.
  • Shoot it.
  • Whatever happened to that animal you just shoot. Shoot ANOTHER ANIMAL that in the same herd. Each animal gets 1 bullet each.
  • When they start running, you start running too.
  • Keep running until you meet them.
  • Eventually you will catch up to them since they are slow.
  • Shoot them once again, again 1 animal/1 bullet or if you are sure that you never hit that animal you can shoot it twice with the sub-weapon of your choice
  • Rinse and repeat

It's way faster than waiting for them to come back to the nearest zone, plus it's more fun and exciting (at least for me).

You could also use the ATV to pursue them if you like, after the 1st phase you open the tent and jump to your ATV and pursue the herds. You could also ready the ATV right next to you before you start shooting.

It works even better if you are playing in multiplayer with your friends. Ask your friend to provoke the animal by running or using the ATV. When the animal are near you start shooting.

Along with your friends, you could also surround the herd from several different directions, something like this

You could also learn another strategy here:

Do it right and your map will look like this

Results for Bison
Results for Buffalo

I know it isn't how things work but sneaking up to in the midst of a herd, firing Garand til it goes PING then switching to shotgun as they run past does work. I'm sure I miss some trophy claims tho :/

I understand that the buffalo may be faster than the bison. That is absolutely true, but they are also way more aggressive. You only need to provoke them, you don't even need to go side by side with them. I bag so many buffalo with this method.

What !!! you don't know how to hunt perfectly the bison also buffalo you can't run over him because is too fast ! but bison you can !
Use a bow with arrow of 600gr to take them down easily, shoot directly in the anus (moreover you can use the crossbow)
