So... this is probably going to ruin my gloating at figuring out how to get all the hats. I would like to keep it a secret amoung the 0.8% of us, but I love this game and the community too much.

Here is what I've figured out about hats:

Different Kinds of Hats

There are three different types of hats: Unlockable Hats, Secret Hats, and Findable Hats

Unlockable Hats

These are the hats that you can simply buy from Hattori and consists of the majority of the hats.

Secret Hats

Everytime you COMPLETELY buyout all items from a NPC seller, you unlock a special hat (Ex: Ox and Cadence, Snails, Doug). This is how you get several of the hats.

The other "Secret Hats" needed to complete the Man of Hats achievement are listed below:

To unlock the Gambler--simply bet against Winchester in the Breach until you have no more bets against him.

To unlock the Baby, you must EXIT the gungeon at least 5 times.

To unlock the Sasaki, you have to EXIT the gungeon while wearing the Box hat.

To unlock the Incubator, you have to EXIT the gungeon as the Bullet while wearing the Link skin.

Findable Hats

You can unlock Findable Hats not via Hattori's kiosk. You must find these in the breach.

You can find several hats in the tutorial (Start the tutorial, Disobey Sir Manuel REPEATEDLY, Complete the tutorial) and the other hats can be found by interacting with the two guards of the gungeon in the Breach and using Beastmode (talk to the left guard).

Bonus Help :P

You unlock the items needed for challenges in the Golfing and Cannon minigames. The rat will have them in a balloon floating high in the screen. TO UNLOCK THE ITEM YOU MUST HIT THE ITEM, not the balloon. Enjoy :D

I played through the game with the hunter skin "Beastmaster" three times and the cap never sold.
Has anyone had such a problem?

For some reason I have not unlocked the Box even though Ive beaten the game 20+ times

just fyi i don't think you need to wager with winchester to get the gambler, because i never wagered with him once in the underbreach and that hat has always been available to me.

The achievement progress shows that I’m progressing only when I buy hats, not when I find them (like the bast mode one or the 2 from the tutorial)
Does the achievement count the other ones or only the hats that can be bought from Hattori?

TIP: To get The Incubator hat you have to EXIT THE GUNGEON using The Bullet with The Adventurer skin (bought from The Snail, homage to Link from Zelda series)
