Introduction
Welcome to the most anticipated game of all time, Half-Life: Alyx. Valve knew that they had a high standard to reach, and they absolutely did. This game is all it's been hyped up to be. It's an absolute masterpiece, might we say the best VR game yet.

Please read the entire introduction as it does have a lot of important information regarding the game before starting it (no spoilers or anything here).

One tip: don't use teleportation mode. There are multiple problems with this: it's not as immersive and sometimes when using it you can actually miss story-related achievement triggers. Smooth locomotion is much more immersive, reliable, and action-packed, and if you're still new to VR this is a good time to get used to this mode of movement since this is a pretty long game, especially for VR.

There's only a couple achievements to be aware of before beginning the game. First, there is an achievement for smashing 50 glass bottles so make sure to smash every bottle you see for the first few chapters of the game. This achievement counts across save files, unlike in past Half-Life games with stat-based achievements. Second, there is an achievement for bringing a gnome from start to finish, just like in Half-Life 2: Episode Two. We have indicated where you can find this gnome in big bold text under the Chapter 1 section of this guide. Every achievement is listed in the order that you should get them, but there are some more general combat-related achievements that can be obtained across many different points in the game.

It should be quite obvious, but you may find some minor spoilers by viewing this guide. We do detail when each story-related achievement unlocks, which could ruin a little bit of surprise for some. There is no spoiler text in this guide. View at your own risk. Note that we will do our best not to give away any major plot-points, however.

On one final note, for those wondering, there is indeed a chapter select. So, if you miss any of these achievements, you can start a new game on the chapter with the achievement you missed. Many of the chapters are quite long, but this is at least better than running through the entire game again.

Without further ado, let's get into the long-awaited Half-Life: Alyx!
Gnome Alone
Upon launching Half-Life: Alyx for the first time, this achievement should pop before even reaching the main menu screen. This achievement was previously thought to possibly have only a 2-week unlock window in 2020, but luckily for us, it seems it's here to stay for good.

Gnome Alone If you are reading this achievement, Gabe Newell has successfully launched Gnome Chompski into space. If you did not also receive the achievement 'Manufacturing Ascent', Newell has abandoned his plans to shoot Noam Chomsky into space.
This pops simply upon loading into the game.
Chapter 1: Entanglement
Chapter 1 has no combat. But it has plenty of easy achievements! The name is a reference to the Half-Life 2 chapter of the same name, chapter 9a.

Good Grub Feed the snark.
In the first room after talking to Eli through the computer, there is a snark trapped in a little glass tank. It looks just like the achievement icon. To its left is a can of food; dump some into his tank and the achievement will pop.

Hit and Run Break out of the Combine prisoner transport vehicle.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks after you exit the crashed prisoner transport vehicle and walk into the streets.

On a Roll Interact with the playground somehow
This achievement is a little misleading in its description. When you're at the playground, you'll see a red bucket nearby, which you can easily pick up. Go on top of the slide and roll this red bucket down to get this achievement.

Eye of the Geiger Measure Russell with the Geiger counter.
When you first meet Russell, pick up the yellow device (looks like the achievement icon) and put it on Russell's face. Nothing special happens, but the achievement unlocks.

Little Slugger Represent yourself with a specific prop on Russell's map
In Russell's room, there is a miniature figure of a Little League baseball player (see the achievement icon) located in front of a monitor which is to the right of the door that leads to the gravity gloves. Put it as your representation in the minimap when Russell asks you for an object and the achievement will unlock. As an extra tidbit of trivia, this is based off of this vintage figure: https://attic-dc.com/item/CPd/adorable-vintage-baseball-boy-with-bat-figurine-ceramic-japan-kitsch-sports-by-vintagegoofball/vintage-goofball

Mag-Snagger Catch Russell's ammo magazine before it hits the ground.
When you first go outside, Russell will throw a gun out the window for you to catch. Don't worry if you miss that catch. After he throws the gun, he'll throw you a magazine, and you need to catch this in mid-air. It's not too hard, but if you miss you can two one of two things: either shoot all of your ammo out of your magazine (Russell will throw you another one as a result) or reload your last save. As a tip, make sure to back up a bit.

At the very end of Chapter 1, in the area where you first get the gun and learn to use the gravity gloves, do NOT go on the train yet! There is a gnome here, and you need to bring it to the end of the game for the Gnome Vault of My Own achievement. You cannot put the gnome in your wrist pockets, which is what makes this achievement annoying. However, the Half-Life 2: Episode Two gnome achievement is probably more difficult to complete. You can either do a second playthrough later on story mode difficulty (to speed things up), or grab it now and just do a single playthrough of the game. This is a full-length VR game, so it will take many more hours if you choose to do this later. However, you may find it more valuable to have a normal first playthrough. Note that a story mode difficulty playthrough will be much, much quicker; you might end up with 1000 ammo in your pistol and/or SMG by the end of the game. You can one-shot headcrabs, zombies and combine die in just two pistol shots, and combine heavies die with just one shotgun blast.

As a word of advice for the gnome; ALWAYS hold onto it without letting go on load screens. Keep your hand in the same position. Most of the time it isn't an issue, but it can disappear between sections after load screens.

Chapter 2: The Quarantine Zone
Chapter 2 begins when you wake up on the train.

Dead Giveaway Loot a corpse.
This one is practically unmissable; anyone playing this game is going to be needing all the ammo they can get. Simply use the gravity gloves to take an ammo magazine off of a dead body at some point. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the game to do this, but the first is just past the first resin in the game, where there is a dead body in front of a padlocked door. On a sidenote, make sure you grab all the resin you can across the game, checking every corner.

Quaranta Giorni Enter the Quarantine Zone.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks right after entering the Quarantine Zone, which has a giant door you unlock with the first puzzle in the game.

Smash and Grab Break open a supply crate with your hands.
Another practically unmissable achievement. The first supply crate in the game is in the trains, at the start of the Quarantine Zone. In one of them is a ladder you are required to use to progress, and next to it is a supply crate. Smash it on the ground and the achievement will unlock. Also probably loot it. Ammo is important.

Up in Arms Install your first pistol upgrade.
Right after a very intense train combat section is a room with some lockers and an upgrade station. You'll need 10 resin; you should hopefully have this much if you've been looking, but if not, it's okay as there's plenty of other upgrade stations across the game you'll encounter. Complete the puzzle, put your gun into the station, and buy the cheapest upgrade (Reflex Sight).

Freshly Squeezed Test your grip on a headcrab heart.
Squeeze one of the hearts in this picture's bucket (the other one won't unlock the achievement). If you use Oculus Touch, you have to grab them normally and then press X or A, a different animation will occur as a result. It's the same button used to prime a grenade later on, if that helps.

Sustenance Receive a tasty treat.
Storyline, cannot be missed. This will pop at the end of your vortigaunt encounter. He will throw you the corpse of a headcrab and say his "sustenance" line.
Chapter 3: Is Or Will Be
Chapter 3 begins just after the meeting with the vortigaunt.

Zombie with a Shotgun Collect the shotgun.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks right after grabbing the shotgun with your primary hand (make sure your primary hand is free for this).

Xen Garden Enter the explosive Xen infestation.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks after you get the red valve and exit the Xen Garden area (this is the area with all the explosives you have to avoid setting off).

Pro-Pain Kill a grunt by shooting their gas tank.
The best early opportunity to get this is in the section where you first engage in combat with the combine outside. All of the combine have gas tanks on their backs, which you can shoot to blow them up and unlock this achievement. You might want to aim more towards the end with the valve to get it to explode. Don't worry if you don't get it now; there are numerous opportunities throughout the entire game.

Off the Rails Stop the prisoner transport train.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks after you've crashed the train and it stops completely.

Mazel Tov Pick up and smash 50 glass bottles.
If you read the introduction to this guide, you should've been looking out for glass bottles to smash. Throughout the game are many, many glass bottles. The first chapter has a bunch, so smash every single one you find there. You should have this achievement by the end of chapter 3 for sure. If you don't, there's still surely hundreds more throughout the game. Also, you can start a new save file and smashed bottles will still add to your achievement stat.
Chapter 4: Superweapon
Chapter 4 begins shortly after the interaction with Eli and the vortigaunt, which happens after the train crash you caused.

There isn't really any achievements in this chapter to worry about. You could get the achievement Indirect Approach at a couple points here, however.

Indirect Approach Kill a Combine Heavy while their shield is up.
This one is tricky, especially with the long load times. First, get a Combine Heavy to low health level by shooting it OR throwing a grenade at it. Then, save. Start shooting at its torso again and as soon as you begin shooting, press the button on a grenade and throw it. Their shield only goes up after being shot at a bit, but doesn't stay up for long, so your timing must be perfect. Easy enough, just can take several tries.

Checking In Reach the Northern Star
Storyline, cannot be missed. This achievement pops at the very end of Chapter 4 after going through the window to enter the Northern Star hotel.
Chapter 5: The Northern Star
Chapter 5 begins just inside the Northern Star hotel. This is the longest chapter in the game, but it's one of the coolest parts.

If you are doing a gnome run, do not leave the gnome outside expecting to see it once you exit the hotel. It's technically a different map once you're out of the hotel. So, bring it in with you.

Xen Lootism Snatch a Xen grenade from its resting place.
This one isn't technically story-related, but it should be hard to miss. There's maybe 3 or 4 spots you can get one of these throughout chapter 5, all of which are in plain sight and along the main path. Using the gravity gloves won't work; you need to get up close to the plant and quickly snatch it out of its grip OR give it a belly rub and he'll gladfully release the Xen grenade with no resistance. Don't worry, the plants cannot harm you.

Heart-Breaker Hotel Get creative turning the power back on.
Storyline, cannot be missed. This achievement unlocks as soon as you use the first electric headcrab's heart in place of a battery to open a door required to progress.

Surface Tension Escape the underground pit.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks when you're about halfway up the elevator to the surface for the first time since entering the hotel. Also, this achievement title is a nice reference to the name of the 12th chapter in Half-Life 1.

Unbonded Collect the SMG.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks once you pick up the SMG for the first time (unlike the Zombie with a Shotgun achievement, this one doesn't require picking it up in your primary hand for the unlock

Cord-Cutter Shut down the substation.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks as you begin your descent down the elevator to the surface after you shut down the substation and encounter another vortigaunt.

There are a few more good opportunities for Pro-Pain and Indirect Approach again if you missed either of these before.

Deadliest Catch Use the gravity gloves to intercept an incoming enemy grenade in mid-flight.
Once descending to the surface immediately after shutting down the substation, there are plenty of combine who throw grenades at you from afar. Pay close attention in this final section for them; the normal-sized combine are the ones who throw them. There are four separate waves at the end of chapter 5 to fight, 2 of which are consecutive. The other 2 are in their own areas. So be prepared to catch any grenades you see coming your way. It's simple enough once you're in the right circumstances.

Combine Harvester Use the gravity gloves to loot an item off a living Combine soldier.
In these waves of combine are also enemies that have items on them, such as magazines or health vaccines. There are plenty of opportunities to get this achievement by simply using your gravity gloves to snatch an item off of combine before they're dead. The easiest spot is to do it in the fourth wave, which is inside of a building, but you can do it as early as right outside of the hotel.

If you still don't have Pro-Pain, Indirect Approach, Deadliest Catch, or Combine Harvester, there are still many, many opportunities throughout the rest of the game. You will still encounter lots of combine soldiers. We will not note when from now on, as it's not really necessary to.

Safe Trip Use the multitool to hack a tripmine.
At the very end of Chapter 5, when you're in the new green building, there are a bunch of tripmines around. This is technically missable within this section, but later on there are times when you will be absolutely required to hack a tripmine. Here's a screenshot of what this will look like:
Chapter 6: Arms Race
Chapter 6 begins at the bottom of an elevator shaft, next to an upgrade station above a lot of things below. Luckily, there's not much in terms of achievements to worry about in this chapter.

Blast From the Past Defuse a roomful of explosive barrels.
Blow the room up as soon as you get to it, then defuse all of the tripmines and leave. This one is a bit finnicky, if you still don't get it, try blowing it up after you've defused the tripmines and left.
Chapter 7: Jeff
Chapter 7 begins once you enter the distillery.

Near-Jeff Experience Stay close to Jeff for 10 seconds (but not too close).
Get close to Jeff for 10 seconds. This one can be a bit tricky, but there are several good times to do it. You can do this one in the elevator, or even earlier. The best place to do it is at the end of Chapter 7, once you have all three batteries and when you've turned on the control panel, alerting Jeff. If you go right up to him at this part, he won't even be bothered by you due to being preoccupied by the control panel's beeping. Lots of people have trouble with this achievement: it seems that the trick is for him to kill you after the 10 seconds instead of you walking away. In the case of the control panel area, you can jump on top of him or wait until it stops beeping to easily kill yourself right after being close to him for a bit. Make sure you don't move while trying to get the achievement. If you're still having trouble, apparently shooting Jeff in the very very first part of the chapter when you meet him (when you're with the human who introduces you to him for the first time) can unlock this achievement too.

Crustacean Frustration Kill the annoying headcrab before it breaks everything.
Shortly after the elevator, you'll enter a room with a headcrab moving around. You'll hear it as soon as you enter this room. Simply shoot and kill it before it gets the chance to knock any bottles over. Make sure Jeff doesn't kill you as this will obviously make some considerable noise. Though, even if he does, you'll still have the achievement.

Hold Your Liquor Catch a bottle falling out of a cupboard before it breaks and alerts Jeff.
When you're trying to find the three batteries, there is a room blocked by a chair you must get into. On the right side of this room, in the back, there is two cupboards. Open the one on the right and be prepared to catch a bottle as it rolls out. I'd recommend maybe saving before trying this for the first time, but it's honestly very easy when you know the bottle is there. You just have to grab it, it doesn't even have to fall out of the cupboard.

A quick reminder; if you were waiting to do Near-Jeff Experience at the end, now is the time!

Flat Note Kill Jeff.
Once you trap Jeff in the trash compactor at the end of the chapter, save your game and press the button to compact Jeff, killing him. After that, you can reload the save and get the achievement for not killing him (see below).

Sound Strategy Escape the distillery without killing Jeff.
Just leave Jeff locked in the trash compactor; don't press the button this time. It's impossible for him to break out of it. The achievement will pop once you exit through the caves; make sure you don't rush through the steps, go slowly or you may actually miss the achievement trigger.

Before moving on to the next chapter, be sure to put a bottle of vodka into your wrist storage. You'll need it for the Team Spirit achievement that is unlocked at the beginning of the next chapter.
Chapter 8: Captivity
Chapter 8 begins in the cave, just after you've escaped from the distillery.

Team Spirit Bring Russell a bottle of vodka.
Unlocks at the very beginning of the chapter once you enter a small room if you brought a bottle of vodka in your hands or in your wrist storage from chapter 7. Special dialogue will occur between Alyx and Russell as a result.

From now on, the rest of the achievements in the game are story-related and unmissable, with the sole exception of the gnome achievement if you are currently working on it within your first playthrough.

Sea Level Reach the aquatic exhibits.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks once you enter the aquatic exhibits area of the zoo.
Chapter 9: Revelations
Chapter 9 begins in a sewer, in front of a tall ladder to the surface.

Triple Bypass Solve the tanker yard's electrical puzzle and escape.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks right after you unlock the door at the end of chapter 9.
Chapter 10: Breaking and Entering
Chapter 10 begins just after exiting the tanker yard through the door with the electrical puzzle (in other words, directly after the Triple Bypass achievement unlocks).

High Water March Start climbing the water tower.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks as soon as you walk into the water tower.

If you are doing a playthrough with the gnome, make sure that when you take down the Vault that you hold onto the gnome. There is a brief period where the screen fades to black, but the load screen has not yet begun. Do not let go of him, no matter what! You'll lose him and have to reload a save otherwise.

Textbook Jinxing Wake the Strider.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks as soon as the strider wakes up as a result of turning the elevator on.

This elevator section can be finicky for the gnome, even if you hold him in your hands. Try just placing him down on the box to make sure he doesn't disappear.

Gnome Vault of My Own Bring a garden gnome with you to the Vault.
If you get here with the gnome, congratulations! The achievement is finally unlocked when you're absorbed by the lightning and into the Vault.
Chapter 11: Point Extraction
Chapter 11 is the final chapter in the game, and begins just after being sucked into the Vault. Just enjoy the ending, pretty much! The name is reference to the first chapter of Half-Life 2, called "Point Insertion."

Point Extraction Get to the superweapon.
Storyline, cannot be missed. Unlocks when you get to the superweapon, the center of the Vault.

Consequences Make your choice.
Storyline, cannot be missed. We won't spoil when it unlocks, but know that you cannot miss it, even if you're using teleportation locomotion for some reason.

Very helpful guide thanks!

I got Near-Jeff Experience almost as soon as they introduced Jeff somehow by looking at him roam the corridor from the high ground... given he is blind. You could probably get it even easier by standing next to him in the elevator part, no need to rush pressing the button...

@Mercury
Thanks for the guide!
Tested with no-vr.

Blast from the Past is unmissable and story related. Simply going thru the room does the trick.

To squeeze the headcrab heart on oculus use the x button or a button on your controllers
"freshly squeezed" has nothing to do with squeezing multiple hearts. you're meant to pick up a heart, and "squeeze" it with the index knuckles like a stress ball a few times.

you folks are most likely on other hardware using button presses. try pressing the "squeeze" button on your controller a few times quickly.

No matter how .any hearts I squeeze I cannot seem to get the achievement any fix?
xr0 2 stycznia 2024 o 8:17
Freshly Squeezed in Chapter 2: Yes, I had to squeeze multiple hearts from the pot in order for the achievement to unlock.

Indirect Approach in Chapter 4: Same as @МяуМяу comment - the first heavy combine you meet, shoots you through the window glass before entering through the door. I had three grenades placed in the alleyway ready for him. As he shoots through the window, I throw one grenade in to damage him. I then pickup the other two grenades I have ready on the floor. When he enters through the door, I throw both grenades at the same time, he loads his shield and blows up, achievement unlocks.

Combine Harvester in Chapter 4: You can do this earlier as the guide puts this in Chapter 5, instead you can do this in Chapter 4. After Indirect Approach achievement, continue until you head upstairs to fight more combine. Once you reduce the numbers to 1, make your way towards the combine and you should be able to pull a grenade from their belt. Achievement unlocks.
