3 diffrent mini guide to same game that has happend over time.
1 find steam ?
2 after a windows build version update
3 config file issue

4 another windows update in section 2 of guide ( semi same as option 2 )

Can't find steam ?

copy steam.dll to game folder
?:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.dll to ?:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Railroad Tycoon 3

and also set administrator compatibility to windows xp S3 for all users
right click game to do this.

after the windows 10 upgrade.
(nvidia user need to check physX that its not a cpu that is set to run as default graphics card,
and amd user need to use AMD Crimson Beta Driver.)
this info was gather from other games with dx11 issue even this game dont have still valid info. and if AMD has a buggy driver.

do validate game cache content, and then do same fix as before, that work for me, but do watchout for other advanced ingame options, they do make a total crash on pc if graphic options is not liked by a new graphics card. . and make a cold reboot is not funny to tweak a game for best graphic if it keep crashes.

just a little guide, ( i take no credit for it.) other then i did report this years ago to 2k, and nothing happend then, and when i notice a fan site with a cfg fix.
i could start the game without the patch, and then the holiday fix, but after that was patched i could not start the game and its all about the .cfg issue, dont turn on T&L lighting that is what crashed it. ( and its turn on in the patch ) and that why you need the file to undo the damage it has done.

its funny that steam don't use that file, then the game will startup under windows7 and vista, and same with 2k support no help from them.
it work with my pc atleast.

Windows Vista Fix For 1.05 and 1.06.

The problem with Railroad Tycoon 3 and Windows Vista is caused by the graphics setting for "Disable Hardware T&L"

This box should be checked. Credit goes to someone named DevHyfes at the Steam forums.

The fix is set in the enslosed file: engine.cfg.

Just copy the file to the Data/Configuration folder and you are ready to go!

So simple.

im not here to steal from site , but point as minimum at site on the old subject.

The following two items are old attempts at fixing RT3's problems with some newer graphics cards.
These old fixes are not really recommended anymore. dgVoodoo is a better option for most people.

Blurry Texture Fix - 36 kB (Read Me). See this thread in the forum for details. Also see this post by the patch maker.
The old "Vista Fix" - 0.77 kB (Read Me). Stops game crash for Vista/W7/W8/W10. See this forum thread for details.

check that graphic driver is newest and is primary selected. ( latest windows10 patch has reset my GPU to CPU ) and even my soundcard plug in card ( creative ) in my case has also got a buggy driver, it needs a reinstall of latest windows10 driver from creative DL page )

and wola all older game work again in steam.

then that is said it can help to check each steam game store page what newest OS system was each game build for and set compability to that. windows7 for this game

Sometimes older game need administrator rights also, game from that time need those rights it was made that way in the older days.

thye keep move things around in links, keep in mind this help was so long ago and all i did was point to external solution, this was not common back then, today user most learn to research topic with outdate game that dont match same OS.

i did not had dgvoodoo that was another user that learn this later. and graphic is even better with that.

Steam can only use the Files they becomme from the Publisher.
Steam only sale Games.
Steam dont program any games.

Nothing works. Such bullshit. Tried everything suggested. There is no Win 7 / Vista Fix file anymore on the hawkdawg site. Such a waste of time and disappointment. Multiple games on Steam no longer work and Steam doesn't seem to give a shit.

1.06 is for old CD-ROM disk version not steam version

When i install the 1.06 patch it then starts asking me for a cd which i obviously don't have since i'm on steam. Any way to resolve this?

Okay finally figured out what is wrong with the game on my pc for some reason fullscreen causes the game to crash with direct x 8.1 error
