A simple guide to identify Panther tanks.
By koecy
Have you ever ran around the battlefield in your T34/85 and suddenly noticed a Panther tank out of nowhere and were like "Oh man I wonder which variant of the Panther I am I looking at?"
or even when looking through military history pictures on Instagram or Facebook and wondered "what variant is that Panther?"
Or just to impress your friends if you have any?
Well, this guide is for you.

Panther Auf D (first production Panther)
To identify this notice the following:
-No armoured ball machine gun mount on the hull.
-Commander's cupola is cylindrical, looking like a drum.

Panther Ausf A
To identify this notice the following:

-Its armoured ball machine gun mount on the hull. (kugelblende)
-The commander's cupola is improved (kinda looks slopped). It also allows to mount an external machine gun against air attacks.

Panther Ausf G
Notice these things to identify it:

-The turret had a chin to eliminate the shot trap.
-The hull is slightly different. (it begins to slope downwards from the middle)

Now keep in mind that there were Panther tanks with hulls from a variant and a turret from another like these:
Panther Ausf G with an Ausf A turret:

a Panther Ausf D with an Ausf A turret:

Schmalturm turret mounted on a Panther G hull:

Panther Ausf F:
the difference between the Ausf F and the previous one is that the Ausf F had a muzzle brake and the presence of an antenna on the back.
(the one on this pic is mounted on a Ausf G chassis since no Panther F was able to be made).

The end:

That was pretty common soviets too, labeling any German tank they saw as тигр (Tigr). Quiet the reputation that tank had

This is real life I am talking about and to ID the variants. Now if you can shot trap the upper hull of a Panther G is entirely up to the game, and I wouldn't count a video game as a basis for my claim if I were you.
