How to copy and paste your MOD LOAD ORDER
By aR.
There are two ways to do this, neither of them will take you more than a few minutes. Please read the guide first, that way you can decide how you want to do this! Its probably a good idea to backup the files you're going to edit, just in case anything goes wrong. No problems were reported as of july 2024, the guide has been up for years at this point.

Without the Darkest Dungeon Save Editor:
1.
This way works best with a fresh save, which means you start a new game, (the difficulty setting does not matter) and finish the tutorial. After that just restart the game. Now set up your load order on this save (see: Guide to a good load order).

What if you already have a load order on a save?
You don’t have to start a new game, it only matters if you care about some details. Copying your existing load order from a save will also copy your current week and quest progress (you can see both in the Journal) AND your saves name (but you can have multiple saves with the same name!). That’s why a new game is the best way to do this. But if you don’t care about some copied “progress” the first method is for you!

2.
- Locate your Darkest Dungeon save folder:
- Go to your Steam folder > userdata > your ID > 262060 > remote
For example - it could look like this:
C:Steamuserdata69420262060remote

If you don’t use multible accounts on the same computer (with Steam’s Family Sharing for example), there will most likely be only one folder - thats the one you’re looking for. If you see more than one folder you can either:
- search for “262060”, the Darkest Dungeon ID. It will be in one of the folders.
or
- find out what your Account ID is (see: Whats my Steam account ID?[steamidfinder.com]).
The one you need is called "steamID3" and is 8 digits long.

3.
Inside “remote” you’ll find one or more numbered profiles (“profile_0”). These are your saves, in the same order as ingame. Every save has it’s own load order, which means you need to know which one you want.
- Let’s say you want “profile_3”. Go into that folder and look for “persist.game” and copy it. Now go to another save folder (of your choice), paste and overwrite.

That’s it, if you install new mods they will be at the bottom of the load order, put them where they belong.

A little warning: Changing something inside your “persist.game” file can result in the loss of the save. If you want a fresh save, without copied “progress”, but you have a load order already, you need to use DDSE (Darkest Dungeon Save Editor)!

With the Darkest Dungeon Save Editor (DDSE):
This way is the better one, new save or not, it does not matter.

A.
If you already have a load order you want to copy, go to step B.
If not: Create a new save and finish the tutorial.
- After that just restart the game. Now set up your load order on this save (see: Guide to a good load order)

B.
If you already know where to find your save folders go to step D1.
Now locate your Darkest Dungeon save folder:
- Go to your Steam folder > userdata > your ID > 262060 > remote
For example - it could look like this:
C:Steamuserdata69420262060remote

If you don’t use multible accounts on the same computer (with Steam’s Family Sharing for example), there will most likely be only one folder - thats the one you’re looking for.
- If you see more than one folder you can either search for “262060”, the Darkest Dungeon ID. It will be in one of the folders.
- Or find out what your Account ID is (see: Whats my Steam account ID?[steamidfinder.com]).
The one you need is called "steamID3" and is 8 digits long.

Inside “remote” you’ll find one or more numbered profiles (“profile_0”). These are your saves, in the same order as ingame. Every save has it’s own load order, which means you need to know which one you want.

D1.
- You need software to open (unzip) .rar files, Winrar or 7-Zip for example.
- Then download the Darkest Dungeon Save Editor (see: DDSE Download[github.com]).
- Create a new folder (where does not matter), put the Save Editor inside and unzip it.
- Now download and install the latest Java version, if you don’t have it already. If you dont want to download software you can do step D2. instead.

D2.
Alternativly there is also a browser editor, which skips the need for downloads. (see: DDSE Online[robojumper.github.io]).
- Upload your "persist.game.json" from the save folder you want to copy the load order from.
- You need to copy everything between "never_again" : "strict" AND "presented_dlc" : {.
These are your mods and their order (if this sounds a bit too complicated, check the picture below this guide, it should explain everything).
- Now upload your "persist.game.json" from the save folder you want to paste the load order into. Paste everything between "never_again" : "strict" AND "presented_dlc" : {. Download the edited file, put it in the folder and overwrite the old one, done!
- You can now skip step E.

E.
- Open the second SaveEditor with Java. Search for the save folder you want to copy the load order from.
All “.json” files will open at the same time, but you just need to look for “persist.game.json”.
- Inside you need to copy everything between "never_again" : "strict" AND "presented_dlc" : {,
these are your mods and their order. Now close it (If this sounds a bit too complicated, check the picture below this guide, it should explain everything).
- Open it again with Java and search for the save folder you want to paste the load order in. Again, go to “persist.game.json” and paste everything between "never_again" : "strict" AND "presented_dlc" : {. Save all changes, done!

I hope this guide was helpfull. If there’s a better way to do this, which won’t end in lost savegames - please tell me, i will update this guide and mention your help (If you want that)!

Thank you to Nep-MIB for their input, that it is now possible to edit the savegames without downloading any software!

That’s it, support modders. xoxo
Cheers!

@Nep-MIB
Thank you! I've updated the guide.

@ekisai
The old road is short enough not to be annoyed by it i'd say, but good point.
ekisai 27 May, 2023 @ 3:22am
dont need to finish the old road before applying a load order, just exit out after loading in the first room and apply the load order afterwards

Dude, thank you for this! For someone that uses 100+ mods and wanted to start another run, this saves me a lot of trouble. Oh btw, the save editor now is an online app in the github, so you don't have to download the software + jave anymore. Just upload or drag n' drop the persist.game.json, edit the needed stuffs, and download it back. Very simple.
