Introduction
This guide gives a general roadmap to completing everything in the game and unlocking the final Crazy difficulty achievements without wasting too much time. Some of the information it gives I've gathered from the JP wiki, the forums or my own experience.

This guide is not meant as a replacement to the 100% Achievement Guide found here, but rather as a companion:

THERE MIGHT BE SPOILERS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
For all playthroughs
There's 32 Gold Medal in the game. By giving 30 to your grandfather you unlock a special reward that doesn't seem to do anything except sit at the bottom of your inventory. There is one such reward per difficulty and they carry over. Make sure to use the CLEAR file that contains them when starting a new difficulty. In my case that was the "Blackbean beaten" CLEAR file.

The Gold Medals are obtained from:

* 20 dungeon levels (4 per area)
* 5 boss levels (1 per area)
* 4 mini-games on the map (all fairly trivial but some get harder in higher difficulties)
* 1 from the Blackbean level
* 2 from the mine car mini-games in the mountain levels (you can safely ignore them)

I always made sure to keep at least 4 saves per difficulty:
  • Everything S-ranked, including map mini-games, EXCLUDING Blackbean, but before beating the end boss
  • CLEAR file after the above save
  • Everything S-ranked including Blackbean, but before beating the end boss (with the grandfather reward in my inventory)
  • CLEAR file after the above save

The latter CLEAR file is the one I used for the next playthrough.

Make sure to keep at least one file per difficulty like above in order to do Boss Rush of that difficulty later on, as you can only start a Boss Rush of the difficulty you're currently running.
Playthrough 1 (Beginner/Normal)
Start on Normal or Beginner. Normal is more of a challenge and is probably best for a first experience of the game, but of course Beginner is easier.

The best headgears you'll want to upgrade (and upgrade almost exclusively, at least past LV2) are Cat Ears and Magic Cap. Cat Ears is the best for S-ranking dungeons, while Magic Cap is the best for bosses. This is true until you complete Happy mode, so don't wait to upgrade them!

Your money will carry over onto the next playthrough so make sure you have a good amount in your CLEAR file in order to buy Cat Ears from the shop immediately along with your Dragon Breath attack.
Playthrough 2 (Normal/Beginner)
If you did Normal first, do Beginner now. Otherwise do Normal.

You can now see Popon in town, but you can only talk to her for now. She'll become useful later on.

You'll want to make sure Cat Ears and Magic Cap are maxed in this playthrough. The level before the Prince fight is great for farming junk as you can get 17 quickly right at the beginning of the level (large enemy 12 + trash 5) and then leave/reenter. Takes maybe one hour or two to do both headgears and then you're set for life.

If you enjoy farming you can also max the Night Cap as it's the best alternative to the Magic Cap. Since Magic Cap is obtained from Mystery Bags you may not obtain it for a while. On the other hand Night Cap can be obtained almost immediately from your grandfather (for 1 Gold Medal).

By the end of this playthrough you should have most of the non-difficulty related achievements. If not, take a look at the other guides.

Again, make sure to have money in your CLEAR file for your next playthrough.
Playthrough 3 (Hard)
Not much to say here. Should be a breeze if you got your headgear maxed!
Playthrough 4 (Happy)
Not much to say here again. It's starting to get a little harder of course but as long as you're well equipped everything should be fine. If you're having a hard time, try to complete all levels quickly, get a CLEAR file (even without S-ranks) and do the Boss Rush Happy (section below) to unlock the Nurse costume. Then go back to S-ranking!

When you beat Happy you unlock Boss Rush as mentioned above, but also Popon. If you had a hard time to beat Tokaron, Popon will make your next Tokaron fight REALLY easy. But she's pretty weak otherwise.
Boss Rush (Happy)
Use the Magic Cap, make sure you have all consumables and optionally a Pink Magic Urn and go!

For your weapon you will want:

  • Boss 1: Ice
  • Boss 2: Ice
  • Boss 3: Shock
  • Boss 4: doesn't matter much, Fire or Shock is fine
  • Boss 5 Prince 1: Fire
  • Boss 6 Prince 2: Shock
  • Boss 7 Tokaron 1: doesn't matter, just need to avoid getting hit
  • Boss 8 Tokaron 2: Fire
  • Boss 9 Blackbean: doesn't matter much, Fire is fine

The best strategy against the Prince is to wait for him to get closer and do Dragon Breath. Note that you must hit him directly as the breath will do 0 damage. When the Prince uses an air attack or stay far away try to get closer and Jump+Attack him to make him switch attacks quicker.

Use the Dragon Breath attack to stay protected during the end of Blackbean's Neo Galaxy attack. Start dodging a little after the third circle appears and aim the flamme toward the center to hit him.

Once you have beaten this Boss Rush you will unlock the Nurse costume. It is much stronger than the headgears you've been using so far. Go to your room to equip it!
Boss Rush (Beginner/Normal/Hard)
Optional.

Load a save from each difficulty mode, equip the Nurse costume, then go destroy Boss Rush of that difficulty. You will unlock additional costumes doing so (but these costumes have no bonuses). Keep a save after that just in case.

Note that there's only one costume for both Beginner and Normal so you don't really need to complete them separately.
Playthrough 5 (Crazy)
Equip the Nurse costume immediately or you'll get completely destroyed. Get ready to be destroyed even with the Nurse costume, particularly in the latter levels!

If you're a gaming god, feel free to try to S-rank everything like this. But your best bet might be to first beat all levels (NOT INCLUDING Blackbean; and without caring about the rank), then beat Tokaron. You will unlock the Leopard costume which is stronger than the Nurse costume and while there's a costume that's even stronger (see next section) you'll want to have at least the Leopard costume to S-rank everything.

Even with the Leopard costume you'll get one shot by some enemies, so be careful!

Done? Well congratulations! You have 100% the game!
Boss Rush (Crazy)
Optional.

Still here? Well not for long...

The final costume, the Swimsuit, can be obtained by completing Boss Rush Crazy. In order to do that you'll want the Leopard costume, all items and a lot of practice against the bosses. The first few bosses should be trivial but mistakes can quickly become fatal.

The Swimsuit gives you really strong attacks, makes you immune to water damage and more importantly every enemy that hits you does 1HP of damage. Yeah. You've broken the game. Congratulations!

Col, thanks for the answer on both topics that I asked

A few hours, depends on your skills, because you have to repeat levels to get S-rank, and in your first playthrough you also need to grind for an hour or so (not required but highly recommended). The first and the last playthroughs are the longest, if you're going for 100%.

How long takes to beat each playthrough?
