UK Chester-le-st Post Office - Unique Building Version

Omschrijving
UK Post Office,Chester-le-St by mntoes, Unique Building Version

This building has been described as both "neo-Georgian" and "Art Deco" in style:-

Chester-le-Street Post Office at 137 Front Street is in the Art Deco style and replaced a smaller building located on the corner of Relton Terrace and Ivanhoe Terrace, and was opened in 1936. It is unusual in that it is one of a handful of post offices that display the royal cypher from the brief reign of Edward VIII.
The King abdicated on December 11, 1936, after less than a year on the throne, choosing instead to marry American socialite and twice-divorced Wallis Simpson.
According to the Chester-le-Street Heritage Society, the town’s post office in Front Street is only one of five in Britain to boast his Royal Emblem on the top floor of the building and consequently unnoticed by most passers-by.

A modernist design, eschewing the familiar neo-Georgian tradition favoured by the post office architects, bearing the Edward VIII cipher, within the tall vertical window. Although no documentary evidence has been found to support this view, it is possible that Chester-le-Street Post Office was designed by Office of Works staff architect John Haswell, whose other work in the North of England in the 1930s include the post offices at Billingham, Normanton, Scunthorpe, and Seaham.
