What may have got people infected is serious surface contamination when handling slime itself.
I've done a Baator play through and been using oxygen mask to survive the slimelung early games. Just avoid handling slime unless necessary.
To be infected by Slime Slung, you Duplicant needs to breathe in contaminated Oxygen. Oxygen Masks will protect your Duplicants since they do not breath in the air of their environment, as long as the masks aren't completely empty.
As evidence, I prefer Oxygen Masks for general purpose base activities and have used them countless times to protect my Duplicants in contaminated areas. As long as they don't run out of Oxygen and need to breathe in the atmosphere, Slime Lung is never a problem.
