Mission 5 has either been screwed up by subsequent patches or is just ridiculously overtuned in the beginning. By the time you get off the deck the two interceptors are about 12 miles away and will immediately launch on you. It makes no sense that they'd get that close without any response from the carrier group, and you end up having to restart until you get lucky and they shoot someone other than you.
My suggestion? Have them SILENTLY appear once we're RTB on a trigger. So that we can either make a break for it, or fight our way out. If someone doesn't notice them appear, they'll come in from behind and they WILL catch up, the way you set them up.
If the player sends their wing to RTB, or to disengage, they will also not be caught unaware, so there is counterplay and it won't screw them over. Unless they were careless, like me, and that turned out to be a memorable experience. While I feel the successful run is, kind of basic in comparison.
I had a really unique experience in this campaign on the second mission. I had spent far too much time on the island, and my wingmen went bingo fuel, winchester. I had Two sidewinders, guns and barely enough fuel to get home but more than them. So here we are, now just reaching the water, with 56nm to the carrier.
Suddenly three fighters had caught up to us, and it was me against the three.
Really smart fighters, I could down two, but the third always got me. Trying to fight them always had one peeling off and going for my wingmen. Eventually I would try to make a break for it, and lure them. I had quite the afternoon trying to kill these guys.
