How to play this game on a modern machine

First off, you need to know that this game was not designed for modern machines and thus, you may be lucky to have a hardware steup which allows you to play the game without any issues. But for us unlucky guys, I have created this guide.

All steps in one list

  1. Go to your Darkest of Days folder found in X:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Darkest of Days
  2. Delete the "setup folder.
  3. Next, head to the following link and download that certain OpenAL DLL and only this one as it won't work otherwise.
  4. https://de.dll-files.com/download/235355a8dd26903e75d5e812ecf50e53/openal32.dll.html?c=Q0FPbUt6ZGRqWlZ2a0dCTWJ4eVkwQT09 (Version 6.14.357.24 in 32bit - download this one anyways even though you might have a 64bit-Sys)
  5. Copy and paste the OpenAL32.dll into your root directory of Darkest of Days.
  6. Play and enjoy!

Additional info

I have tested this on multiple machines which didn't allow me to play the game beforehand, even with compatibility settings active. You needn't mess around with PhysX, this will do the trick.

No luck with AMD drivers. Unfortunately even the guys who designed the game are stumped as to what's causing the problems.

I can play it just fine with I5 core processor 16gb ram nivida or whatever 1660ti etc modern simple equipment yet it works fine for me My tip is start the game and don't touch a damn button don't even breathe or you'll end up getting screwed from what it looks like since you keep eating big macs.

It keeps saying no sound device detected for me, any idea how to fix that?

I tried doing this and placed the file mentioned in the root directory, but the game still keeps crashing the moment I select New Game (Downloaded it several moments ago). Deleted set-up and all that jazz and toyed with the Physix setting in the menu, but other than that, nothing seems to work. Advice?

Can't tell since I own NVIDIA only.

Does this solve the AMD black screen bug?
