Intro
Thanks to everyone in the comments who has added info, I have verified everything now and the Race/Background section is complete. It's possible that there is multiple ways to unlock something or that I missed some requirements. Feel free to comment more info or correct me on things.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE MAY BE SPOILERS, ESPECIALLY IN THE ITEM SECTION

If you are still on your first or first few runs, you may want to experience things yourself first.
Races (Complete)
Human
You own this by default.

Elvish
- Less Health
- Speaks Animal
- Knows Forests

The old Hag that can be found on the Road needs to be turned in at Mythrandir and then married.

Dwarf
- Healthier
- Ale Tolerant
- Knows Hildabor

Need to do the family Jewelry quest received from Hildabor. You can find the event in the Mountains . Then marry a dwarven Lady. The city can be found in the Mountains you need a lot of gold to enter.

Treant
- Healthiest
- Very Strong
- Monster

Need go use the destiny Sword(Or be from the Ratfolk Race) to cut through the Vines in the Forest, then beat Vineroth and follow the Treants. Don't accept the blessing, say you didn't do it for a reward. Bring her to Alluris, The Cave (level 2) on the Road and the Sky Fortress from climbing the beanstock after you planted beans in soil in Alluris. After all three locations are visited, if you are noble, marry her to get the Mushroom Wife, unlocks Treant Race.[/td]

Need to get into the Cave dungeon on the road and delve deeper, you probably need to have the Rat Pack with you (gained by using flute + musical talent to have them follow you) and not be married already. Marry the Rat Queen.

Tiefling

- Wild Magic
- Mysterious

You can get the quest by a mysterious man named Adam, it can pop up if you hang out in (any?) a tavern (bradford for me), he wants you to go to the Mountains where an obelisk will point the way towards a demon you need to slay. Afterwards you adopt the demon child you saved.

Fairy
- Least Health
- Magical
- Hard to hit

Go to Mythrandir the Elven city and get the quest to find the Magic Arrow, then head back into the deeper forest within the Forest and find the miniature town event, the fairies need you to defeat the demon.

Merfolk
- Wet
- Wild
- Breathes Water

Need to be exalted (Do 3 quests) for the Merfolk in Atlantis, and then marry the prince.
Backgrounds (Complete)

You own this by default.

Merchant
- 50x Gold
- Good Deals

Need to accept quest in Alluris to Deliver Medicine to Bradford. Then accept quest in Bradford to deliver Tools to Hilabor. Then accept quest in Hilabor to deliver Weapons to Mythrandir. The order of the latter two doesn't matter, but the events only pop up after delivering the medicine, you may also need enough gold for the purchase of the delivery (e.g. 300g for the Weapons).

Hero

Need to pull out the Sword from the Stone with either 100 Karma or Extreme Strength in the Forest.


Cartographer
- Has all Maps
- Knows Paths

You need to find the three Map items (Forest, Mountain, Undercity) in a single run. Refer to the item section to see where they are.

Bard
- Owns a Lute
- Can play it
You need The Flute and Musical Talent. I Believe this event only pops up if you have Musical Talent which you can buy from an Elf in Mythrandir in the Foreboading Forest. It cost me 800gold, or is free if you are Heroic.

Noble
- 5x Gold
- Respect
- Educated

Need to marry the merfolk prince in Atlantis (needs exalted status) or at the Bradford Event after bringing medicine and paying 1000g for dinner.

Wizard
- Knows Magic
- Well Read
- Kinda Nerdy

This is unlocked at the Wizard Tower in the Mountains. First you need Magical Powers or Wild Magic, there is multiple ways to obtain it (see item section). Then you need to go back to the Tower with a Soul Gem - again there is multiple ways to obtain it (see item section).

Dark Knight
- Unsettling
- Dread's Child
- Has Soulstone

You need to defeat Baron Dread and maybe sit on his Throne to unlock this. You need the Mountains map from the Undercity (or from defeating a deathknight [small chance]) and Soul Blade from the Frozen Wastes.

Barbarian
You need the quest to find the earrings for the Dwarf from Hildabor for the event to pop up in the Mountains. You need to beat the Barbarian encounter, best to be done when having the Bear companion (Can be encountered in the Forest, hug it if you have Dunce or give it a fruit basket taken from the Road) In the event just follow the barbarians and lick the stone.

Captain
- Uncle's Ship

- Can Speak Yar

You need to have a ship and be on the sea. When pirates attack you, defeat them to obtain the Pirate map. Continue on the sea until you find the pirate cove, beat the pirates. (Took me very long to get this, I believe there is several items or backgrounds that you can have that make the Pirate encounter not pop up).

Chef

You need to complete the hunger quest in Khunad, which is somewhat long. First you need to get noticed and invited by the resistance, then you need to talk to the baker in Khunad, then find Flour on the Road (at the new Mill event), then get the secret Recipe from the Baker in Alluris, finally get back to the Baker in Khunad.

Need to win the Race in the Dunes.

Dragon Rider
- Has Dragon
- Will Travel

Need Beans from the Dark Mage encountered in the Tavern to create the beanstock from any town to the sky fortress. Here you need to get the Sky Flower. There wou will need the Heart of Ice (Tundra Dungeon, requires SoulBlade from Icy Caves) the Sky Amulet (Received upon trading for the Sky Flower with the Couple in Bradford) and either the Ice Dragon or the Fire Dragon (From the Djinnie in the Pyramid or hatching the Ice egg from the Frozen Wastes in the underdark (lvl 3 Cave). [It's possible that there is other options for the frozen heart as well]

Lawkeeper
- Is the Law

- Rides Bear

Become exalted (Do all quests) at the Monastery in the Frozen Wastes. More info in the Item section.

Maybe I will start working on how to get the different items. Seems like pretty important info seeing as they are necessary for most unlocks, but it's a lot of work, I will see how it goes.

Beans
Dark Mage for 100g
Can be planted into soil at major cities and leads into the sky.
Bear Companion
Forest
Fruit Basket or Dunce allows you to tame the bear. Bear is required for the barbarian event in the mountains. Kills Mammoth for free.
Borrowed Ship
Any Tavern - Sailor
Allows you to go to the sea from Alluris.
Broken Speeder
Dunes - Race
If you make a lot of risky maneauvers during the race, your speeder may brake down and you need to go fix it at Khunad to get Speeder and an achievement.
Captain

Beat the Pirate Ships, get the Pirate Map, enter the Pirate Cove, beat the Pirates. Unlocks Pirate Background.
Cart
Road
You can pick up a Cart on the road and bring it to safety at a city for Gold and Karma or XP.
Cart of Sand
Dunes
Sand Merchant gives you a whole Cart if you have Heroic.
Chef
Khunad
Need to Bring Flour, Secret Recipe, to the Baker in Khunad. Unlocks Chef background.
Chester
Easter Island - Cove
Talk to the Chest, be nice and take it with you.
Coconut
Easter Island
Can be picked from a tree with Magical Powers. Needed to Repair the ship's Mast
Concealed Max
Dunes
After finishing the Pyramid and learning the Truth about Max being the heir.
Conch Shell
Easter Island
Can be found when scavenging for supplies.
Corrupted
Sea - Sea Floor / Cave lvl 3 / Mountains
Mysterious Creature offers it at the Sea Floor. When keeping the Foreboading Ring at the Lava you get corrupted. If you gave the Couple at Bredford a skyrose, they invite you at the Mountains, stay the night and slay the demon to get corrupted.

Beat Baron Dread and sit on the Throne. Soul Blade may(?) be required to beat him.
Destiny Sword

Needs extreme strength or 100 Karma to be pulled out.

Random item purchased for 100g from the Dark Mage. Can deal 60 damage to Baron Dread. Can be used to capture the Magic Sheep.
Diving Suit
Alluris - Shipwreck
Can be purchased for 800g or when boarding a Shipwreck. Required for deep diving.
Dragon Rider
Sky Fortress - World Tree
Need Sky Amulet, either Ice or Fire Dragon and Heart of the Ice (May be other options). Unlocks Background. Helps in overtaking Khunad. Lets you fly to the Sky Fortress from the Road.
Drinking Champion
Bedford
Just win the drinking event.
Dunce
Barbarians start with it.
Can hug a bear in the forest to get him as an companion. Can be used at the Deep Forest Waterfall to get to Mythrandir. Makes Horse cost 400g.
Dune Racer
Dunes - Race
Win the Race, unlocks Racer background
Enlightened
Road - Troll encounter
Tell him to answer his questions, than ask why you should give him your name and then what's the best animal. Can now repair Merchant Cart
Exotic Fish #1
Sea - Sea Floor
Can be caught with Magical Power or Extreme Strength, needs the quest from Atlantis to show up.
Exotic Fish #2
Sea
Just cast the nets when coming across the fishing pool, needs quest first.
Exotic Fish #3
Road - River
Can be fished up at the river, needs quest first.
Extreme Strength
Barbarian Race / licking the stone in the barbarian encounter at Mountains / Geenie Wish
Can pick up Aerodynamics Stone to kill next highwayman. Beat Jkhard Monk in Training. get Log at Logswing during same Training. Break open Frozen Treasure. Take Frozen Blade. Helps beating Ancient Chamber Boss.

Needs to have Khunad Resistance quest for this to pop up. Bring it to the Baker in Alluris to obtain Secret Recipe.
Foreboding Ring

Mermaid offers it. Can be thrown into Lava at the deepest level of the Cave or kept in order to get corrupted.

Obtained by donating to the monks (Needs a certain amount of Karma). Instantly kills Cervog, the lvl18 rabbit which grants ~150.000XP. Instantly kills Vineroth in the Forest.
Ice Egg
Frozen Wasted - Egg enemy encounter
Can be used to avoid fighting Dragons. Can be hatched at Lava Flow deep in the Dungeon on the Road.

Reward for marrying the Rat. Allows you to enter Undercity.
Map of the Forest
Mythrandir / Defeat Vineroth
Can be purchased for 50g. Allows you to enter Foreboding Forest.
Map of the Mauntains
Undercity
Can be purchased for 50g. Also has a chance to drop from Deadknights after day 500 I believe. Allows you to enter Castle in the Mountains.

On second arrival, you can user Magic Powers to get the keys. Key can be used to open Weapon Closet to recieve Stolen Weapons from the guards. Also lets you escape Jail.

Obtained when having Max with you. Can be given to Monks in the Monastery on arrival instead of fighting them.

Marry the Merfolk Prince or encounter in Bredford
Ore Crawler
Road
I believe you need to be a dwarf or Elf for this. The event where you help the people and kil the crawler for the barrel, now gives you this Ore Crawler item as well and you don't need to fight for it. Helps against the fight against Vineroth.
Pearl
Easter Island
Obtain by attacking the Clam.
Planks
Eastern Island
Gotten from searching for supplies, needed to repair ship.
Potato Sack
Khunad
Can be purchased for 250g. Allows you to bring Max into the city of Khunad.
Rat Folk

Can climb crawl the Vines in the Forest. Helps with some Fights.

Need Musical Instrument and Musical Talent to have rats follow you. Can distract Guards in Khunad. Required to marry Rat Queen in Cave lvl 2

A Quest at Bredford inn wants you to banish ghosts at the mill. You can talk to them if you have The Sight and convince them to leave, this is your reward. Can be turned back to the Miller for 20.000XP and 450G

Once broken during the Race you can go fix it in Khunad.

Mermaid offers it in Grove.
Soul Blade
Frozen Wastes - Ice Caves
Need Extreme Strength to pull it out. Instantly kills Ghouls. Opens Darkened Obelisk to gain access to Tundra Ruins. Helps beating Ancient Chamber Boss.
Soulstone
Dark Magician 100g / Dusksun Fair becoming King
Required as second Quest for the Wizard at the Wizard Tower. Revives you with 60(?) HP when you die.
Stardust
Sky Fortress
Bring the Star Woman to the Sky Fortress, leave her at the highest tower.
Star Woman
Forest
Quest from Bredford inn invites you to check out meteor at the forest. During Royal Court Murder Scene at the telescope she lets you know she wants up to the sky fortress, which you can reach with the beans (not completed yet).
Suspicious Potion
Alluris - Royal Court - Kitchen
In the cupboard. Can ask Elf in Garden about it -> Sleeping Elixir. Can be used to explain that the queen isn't dead.
Tamed Horse
Alluris / Hidden oasis
Can be purchased for 200g in Alluris or Bradford, or tamed in the Hidden Oasis
Tapestry
Alluris - Royal Court
Get it as a Barbarian on your Quest

Drink the potion you are being offered. Can see Ghosts now. Allows to communicate with Soul Blade

I believe you need to get the Quest with the ad at Alluris Tavern, then a forest shack event can pop up, don't fight the vampires. Makes you not breath, dodges Vineroth's attack in the forest. Helps killing certain enemies.
Weapons for Mythrandir
Hildabor
I believe this quest only shows up after the Medicine has been deliver to Bredford. Costs 300g, needs to be turned in at the Elfish City Mythrandir for more Gold and XP.
Wild Magic
Thiefling Race / Manastorm
Can be obtained by diving into the Manastorm. Useful in some bossfights. Allows to Enter Wizard Tower in the Mountain. Can now Absorb Manastorms for XP.
Wizard's Brew
Mountains - Wizard Tower
Need to have the quest from Khunad to bring Wizard note to the Wizard. Return to Knunad.
Wizard's Note
Khunad
A poor wizard asks for help, gives you this. Turn it in in the Mountains at the Wizard.
Yeti Fur
Frozen Wastes - Lvl 13 Yeti
Kill the Yeti. Can be given to the Mermaid in the Cove (why?)

Great guide. Musical talent can also be gained by donating to a poor person (rat-looking) in Mythrandir IIRC, but only if you're poor (less than 100 gold maybe?) He turns into a god and says something like "you give, despite having so little?" and he blesses you with musical talent.

Thanks for Treant unlock - never would have figured that out.

Elf Musician will also unlock Musical Talent for free for Nobles.

Soul blade also kills Wraiths.

I'd like to add that the fire dragon can also be obtained by meeting the pacifist mage dude in Bedford?, then going into the cave entrance and leaving the cute bug creature alone 1 or 2 times. He gives you the fire dragon egg which can be hatched into a baby fire dragon the same as the ice dragon.

Would anyone know how to get the "Savior Of Alluris" achievement??

Apparently I have to defeat Baron Dread and save the world, but I thought I already did that by beating the game many times? Is there something I am missing?

@peter.makai I think you have to get the Wild Magic from the manastorm in the Caves, get the SoulStone and bring them to the Wizard tower in the Mountains.
