FAF has solved nearly all the performance issues especially the slowdowns with lots of air spam. Plus they have added in tons of new content in the form of extra campaign style missions and a zillion maps and mods along with the healthy online community which numbers in the thousands.

ill repeat some of the advice below. FAF aka forged alliance forever is the answer to many issues you may have. FAF is a community that loves the game and have made their own updates to the game over the years. They have even made a coop campaign to play with up to four total people.
Enjoy this wonderful game!

Add Large Adress Aware from here:
https://www.moddb.com/downloads/large-address-aware1

It allows you to patch an exe game file allowing it to use more RAM on your computer, which increases performance.

I had crap performance and my sound was terrible. Had me baffled because my system is really very good. Ryzen 7 1700. My son noticed that the game was loaded on one of my 7200 rpm standard hard drives. Both issues were resolved after I moved the game over to my SSD C:Drive. All is well with the world now. Game runs great.

Biggest performance improvement in Win 10/11 is to toggle D3D_WindowsCursor in the console. Brought me from shitty FPS/stutter to immediate great performance. Ryzen 7 2700, 2070 Super

@Lexal No. That is something broken at the core level of the game, sadly.

these sound all well and good, but does either of those mods, if any, fix the AI slowing the game to a crawl due to them trying to give orders to dead units?
