Hi, Saintonge: Yes, It's an Antonio Ferrer Dalmau 's painting about the Rocroi battle. It's represents the last French charge against the defenders. Before this very moment, the French General, atonished for the resistance of this about 500 men of various companies (without cannons and almost gunpowder), and knowing that to defeat them would cost many french lives, offered the Spanish soldiers an honorable retreat: maintaining their banners, their arms and the guns. The spanish captain answered to the french parliament: "Sire, we can not surrender. This is a Spanish Tercio". The last charge, preceeded by a huge cannon discarge, ended with the victory of the French Army. The Spanish army won battles after that one, but this is officially the beginning of the end of this tactical unit.

Given the French flags and standards in the background, my guess is that it is at Rocroi (1643)- famous French victory, actually; and the beginning of the end for the Spanish Tercio.

In those days, they only cared about posing for paintings after the action stops. In modern combat, everyone helps the wounded.

It'd be cool to have a Pike and Shot TW. The closest thing is the first chapter of the Road to Independence campaign where you only have pike and line infantry to fight the natives
