Back in 1938, the Soviet gloomy genius Sergei Ilyushin, on his own initiative, filed down a plan for an attack aircraft, which distinguished itself from all others in its concept: the aircraft, designed to directly support cannon fodder, was half-armored under the project, which allowed it to operate at low altitudes and at the same time be well protected from shooting on the ground. In general, flying, but a tank. The initiative in the USSR of the times of Stalin was especially severely punished, in particular, by the obligation to fulfill, and Ilyushin found on his ass adventure in the form of a plant and instructions to urgently organize mass sawing of flying tanks with a jigsaw, for which a technical task was specially drawn up and a competition was announced. The subsequent time from January 1939 to February 1941 was spent on building beta versions of the aircraft, correcting jambs and file processing. As a result, 5 months before the start of the war, IL-2 did go on a series at four plants (but in a single-seat variant, without a rear gunner). And, like almost every tank of the mid-30s, the reservation was bulletproof. The joke of this design was that the armor of the aircraft not only performed protective functions, but also created an integral basis of the structure (like a load-bearing body of cars), and took on itself the load on the aircraft. Simply put, the sheathing itself was an armored hull, just like the tanks of those days: in aircraft manufacturing, no one had thought of such impudence, and in the automobile industry this was not the case. Thus, Ilyushin solved the security problem with acceptable characteristics for a mass aircraft. The armor protected the vital parts of the aircraft, such as the engine, radiator, and, of course, the pilot. The shooter, until the end of the war, flew on a suspended seat made of tarpaulin and wiped out a ton of bricks from any shot both from behind and from below. Nevertheless, even heavy armor-piercing bullets could be put on machine-gun fire from the ground, big and thick, in especially lucky cases, the armor withstood hit even by 20-mm aircraft shells. Nevertheless, the 20- and 37-mm shells gave the pilots trouble and holes in the plane. However, the IL-2 could reach the airfield in an almost disassembled form, from which even the crew themselves had shattered bricks. They even found a plane on which they counted 600 (!) Bullet holes. He also flew to the airfield. The armament of the aircraft was no less ancient than the reservation. The quantity and quality of various machine guns (from 20 and 23 to 37 mm), unguided missiles and bombs turned the IL-2 into a doomsday machine of a local scale. There was a short period when IL-2 used the distant ancestor of napalm - the self-igniting liquid KS in special ampoules, which burned ahead of its time both tanks and infantry.
