Grab the shell by its connector and walk up to the gun's 2, or 10 'o' clock, hold the shell in front of you and try lifting it up around mid barrel, when it's on top, drag it towards the rear connector and it will snap in place.

{ BTW }

Spawn the shells in with the gun's same orientation to keep them stable in flight. (stormworks bug)
