Flak 8,8 cm - 36 (WWII cannon)

Omschrijving
This is my first creation on the workshop, i hope you'll like it

About the Flak 8,8 cm - 36

The Flak 8,8 cm - 36 is a German 88 mm anti-aircraft and anti-tank artillery gun from World War II. It was widely used by Germany throughout the war, and was one of the most recognized German weapons of that conflict. Flak is a contraction of German "Flugzeugabwehrkanone", meaning "aircraft-defense cannon", its original purpose.

Its successful use as an improvised anti-tank gun led to the development of a tank gun based upon it : the 8.8 cm KwK 36, with the "KwK" abbreviation standing for "Kampfwagen-Kanone" ("battle vehicle cannon"). The Flak meant to be placed in a gun turret as the tank's primary armament. This gun served as the main armament of the Tiger I heavy tank.

Description of this creation

It is obviously a bit different of the real one, i modified some parts of the model to make it easy to use due to the scales and how the game works :
  • There is no sight or anything which could help you to aim at something (i'll maybe add it in the future)
  • The reloading system is not the same, more precisely, the shell rack which is supposed to help you pushing the shell into the barrel. The real one works with pivots, this one works with tracks But thankfully, there are no problems with the reloadings

This creation took me more than 20 hours to build and i tried my best to make it as much fonctional as i can. The part i spent the most time on is the reloading system, it almost took half of the time i spent on this building. Why so much time ? Because i tried to make the real reloading system, but it was just a waste of time. Then i tried other systems but they were really bad or difficult to use...

The other things which took a lot of time to make were the shells rockets, because the rockets are unstable and don't flight in a straight line because of bugs caused by the weird weight balancing of the connectors or other blocks. So i made a lot of prototypes from 4 blocks to 8 blocks long, but it didn't work and the rockets were stuck in the barrel.

These are the final states of these rockets :

Other rocket cofigurations might not work with this cannon, they will get stuck into the barrel...

The rockets that you can see on the picture just above are the new ones (see the creation's change notes). These rockets are composed of :
  • 3 rocket boosters
  • A stabilizer (just a free pivot)
  • A gripper track (it connects with the barrel)
This configuration is what makes them very fast and stable. I made a lot of tests with these rockets to know if they work correctly and don't get stuck in the Flak's barrel : i shot 10 shells and 0 failed or got stuck...

How to use ?

Barrel rotations :

There are 2 axes which can be used to rotate the barrel : the horizontal axis and the vertical axis...
You can rotate the barrel by using the 2 wheels on the right side of the cannon, like in the GIF below :

Choose a shell :

You have 2 categories of shells to your disposition, the easy to load and the hard to load (like a level of difficulty). Signs indicate you the categories, just choose the shell you want to use...
Note : the easy to load shells and the hard to load shells work the same, the hard ones are considered more difficult to load just because of a balancing part which can cause difficulties to load them !

Loading a shell in the barrel :

Just grab the object and then put it on the reloading rack :

Be careful to put the shell correctly on the reloading rack, because if you don't, it might get stuck or fall of the cannon...

Wrong ! This one will get stuck or will fall from the rack

Right ! Make sure the top of the shell is between the 2 blocks of the reloading rack (the connector needs to be inside the hole)

Then you have to raise the reload rack, put the top of the shell into the barrel (by grabbing the connector), push it and close the hatch (all the buttons you need for this manipulation are on the control panel) :

If the shell get stuck, just try placing it yourself again

After pushing the shell into the barrel, make sure the hatch is closed ! If not, the shell will get stuck into the barrel when you'll shoot...

Time to shoot :

After all these steps, you just have increase the lever. You'll need to wait ~1s until the shell connects with the trigger, it will shoot automatically :

If a shell gets stuck inside the barrel, just load another one and shoot

Everything will reset after you shot, which means the barrel hatch will open, the reload rack will lower and the "fire" lever will go down.

reloading mechanism is broken because of the radio components, looks like they're too old to be supported by the game still, for those who want a fix (or if the author would like to fix it) you can simply replace the depreciated radios with the up to date rx small radio blocks and rewire the inputs and outputs (although you will have to add two constant on's for the xmit signals), i suspect that a more simple solution exists with clever use of an electrical cable (hardest part is not limiting the left/right of the cannon rotation with said cable)
