The M1A2 Abrams main battle tank is a further development of the M1A1. Currently it is one of the best MBTs in the world. Development of improved M1A1 began in 1988. About 1 200-1 500 M1A2 main battle tanks were delivered to the US army. Out of this number approximately 1 000 out-dated M1 main battle tanks were upgraded to the M1A2 standard.

In 1972 the US Army requested design proposal to meet a requirement for a mechanized infantry fighting vehicle. It was developed in response to the Soviet BMP-1 IFV. A complex series of design submissions and changing specifications followed until a Fighting Vehicle System appeared, comprising two vehicles, an IFV which became M2 Bradley and Cavalry Fighting Vehicle which became the M3. It was designed as a better armored replacement for the ageing M113 armored personnel carrier.

The M6 Linebacker short-range air defense system was developed by Boeing to meet the US Army requirements. The new vehicle was intended to counter the threat posed by low-flying aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles to forward armored formations.

Currently the HMMWV or High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle is the most widely used military light utility vehicle in the world. The HMMWV was designed by the AM General. Production of the baseline M998 commenced in 1981. Initial batch of these utility vehicles was delivered to the US Army in 1983.

Trials of the F-15 in the air-to-ground role began during 1982 when McDonnel Douglas (now Boeing) modified the second TF-15A two-seater as the Strike Eagle as a private venture. The Strike Eagle was seen as a possible replacement for the F-111, and emerged as the winner of an evaluation over its rival, the General Dynamics F-16XL, for the USAF's Enhanced Tactical Fighter programme. The first production F-15E made its maiden flight on 11 December 1986.
